Ok, someone help me out on this, I have a good memory, it’s just short! Was it Leopold or Muir who wrote about this same exact thing about 70 years ago??? Something of a warning that the absence of wolves in an area would result in the deforestation by ungulates? Is it just me? This guy sounds quite excited about the fact that after we undid something we should have never done in the first place (erradicate a species from an area) that area returned to it’s natural state of balance? This IMO is not a scientific breakthrough that should be celebrated? It’s more of a “shoulda had a V8” moment where we need to stop, look back and wonder who else we should have listened to!?!?

Am I way off base here?

Back when I was a teen-ager and first starting in bowhunting, my cousin and I got turned around after dark walking out of some woods in central Illinois. We hopped a wire fence and wandered out into a field. When we looked up a slight rise in the field we could see the silohette of an enormous bull staring at us. You’ve never seen two kids fly back over a fence with such agility! I guess in that instance, we were the out of place critters!?!?

Do dogs or baiters go first this year?

We are getting quite stir crazy up here in northern Wisconsin! After several long and tiring dicussions, my girlfriend and I have decided to sit out this Spring Turkey season. A decision that was very difficult to make but the facts remain. This winter has been the worst the state has experienced in almost 100 years and it has been devastating on the local wildlife. Reports are coming in about turkeys found starved to death all over the state. We decided that since we have such a small population in our area that it would be best to leave those that survive to recover when the snow breaks and hope they can rebound? We will still purchase our tags to make sure our dollars get back into the system but we will spend our “Spring Break” pursuing other outdoor activities this year. I worry greatly about this years fawn crop!

I burned out on all the technology. It became a burden and a crutch to me more than an advantage and I feel like it took something away from my experiences in the woods. This past season was my first full season in the woods with traditional gear only and I felt like a true bowhunter again. I stayed on the ground, carried minimal accessories and just got out there and soaked it all in! Having a weapon of wood in my hand rather than machined metal made me feel more like I belonged out there again. A closer connection to the process you might say? I didn’t connect on any game this past season… And it was the greatest year I’ve ever had! I envy all of you who have for so long “suffered” this addiction I have only just found!

What you have to be careful of when you see a study like this is the fact that the numbers are a bit skewed. In order to accurately account for a certain predators impact on a prey species you have to keep the counts within the boundaries of that predators range. These numbers, while a good start, are state wide ratios. Wolves and bears do not inhabit the entire state while people and deer do. So those numbers would shift a bit if you were to focus on percentages specific to the occupied ranges of wolves and bears. But, like I said, its a good start.

Great story mhay! And it makes a great point. To me the spring morning is a much more magical morning than the fall morning. The woods are coming back to life, the songbirds are singing and for some of us, its the first WARM sunrises we have felt in months! I find it much easier to get out of bed for a turkey sunrise than I do for a deer sunrise!

Most states dont have a closed season on rough fish but its always best to go to the source for certainty. If you want to find an easy way to bowfish carp through the ice, look for warm water discharges near power stations. Carp will flock to these areas.

All summer long you either have a bruise or a leather stain on one forearm!

We don’t have a lot of turkeys as far north as I am but I love hunting them all the same. I’ve gotten one in ten years and I still look forward to every season. The spring woods are magical! I would recommend picking up several different kinds of diaphragm calls and learn how to use them well. I say several different kinds because it can take a few to find one that fits your mouth properly. They are essential if you are not going to sit in a blind and with using a bow. Gotta be able to be extremely still and have your hands on the bow. That’s about the only advice I would offer. I’m sure there’s a lot better and more successful guys on here that can help with the rest! Welcome to the madness! You dont know what you’ve done to yourself, turkeys are addicting!

                            Best of luck!

I’m a big fan of granola bars. I repack them in a zip lock bag to keep the garbage to a minimum and the zip lock is much quieter than the wrappers. Although I have learned to make sure the bag is completely closed and packed away when I’m done eating one. Woke up from a mid day nap once to the sound of a chipmunk in my backpack!

in reply to: The Hammock Seat #18658

I’ve used this seat for 2 seasons now and it is as advertised in my opinion. Excellent for throwing in the pack and having a comfortable place to sit always available. Like all new gear ya gotta play around with it and learn its strengths and weaknesses but overall I’ve been very happy with it. I did replace the plastic buckle with a pair of steel d-rings for better durability, especially when the weather gets cold. That plastic tends to get brittle.
