in reply to: Hunting 2016 #56570
Ya, it’s properly termed the European mountain ash but know by many other names. I forgot to type in mountain when I wrote the first message. It’s berries are an October favorite of Bears and many birds, as I learned during my trip. By the end of the 2 weeks most groves I was watching were bare!
It was a fantastic experience.

in reply to: Big storm, acorns on the ground, bears. #53230Way too go! What a thrill, bears on the ground! I agree with dwc, please let us know what info you receive back from fish and game about your bears age? What she must have seen in all her years! Congrats!
in reply to: Hunting 2016 #53185Well I just got back from my Boundary Waters bear hunt and although I did not get one the trip was anything but a failure. 2 weeks of wilderness hunting with longbow in hand, what more could one need? I found some beautiful areas, the woods were gorgeous. Actually did find good, fresh sign but never caught up with any bruins. For clarification, I was simply still hunting, no bait or other means. Just felt like testing my knowledge regardless of the outcome. I discovered early in the trip that the bears were currently hitting young European ash trees that were still laden with berries so I concentrated on draws and openings where the trees were plentiful. Just never crossed paths with any although they were clearly around. Fortunately the grouse were also heavy in the berries and I was able to procure a couple fantastic dinners of both Ruffes and Sprucies! Saw lots of Moose sign and got to listen to the wolves almost every evening. Say what you will about them, the wilderness just wouldn’t be the same without them! Deer sign was practically non-existent mostly due to the rash of consecutive harsh winters we have endured in the past few years. All in all, it was truly a privileged experience that I will cherish the memories from and hope that I can return again next year. Now it’s time to get out back home and see where the white tails are and see if I can make this the year I get my first longbow deer? Hope everyone is having a fantastic season!
in reply to: ARE YOU READY? #1773022 days to go and I’m outta here for 2 weeks of black bear and deer hunting in th BWCAW!!! Can’t hardly wait and I may be “over-ready”. It’s funny you ask if you’re carrying too much, Grumpy. I have been whittling down my gear for weeks now trying to really separate the necessities from the comfort items. It’s amazing what we consider needed until we’ve carried it around on our backs for days without ever using it? Anyways, the freezer is all cleaned out and ready to go should the good Lord see it fit that this be the year I do it right. But if not, I am thankful that another season is nearly here and I still have the health and opportunity to enjoy it! Good luck too you and everyone this season!!!
in reply to: Nancy 'Redbird" LaClair has passed… #17655Prayers and deepest sympathy to Ron and his family.
I gotta say, while I am an “Upper Great Laker” for life and never grow tired of hunting the Northwoods for Whitetail and Black Bear, I do find myself often envious of those of you that call the Mountains home! What spectacular wilderness you enjoy and what a fine representation of it in your film, Clay! May we never become complacent or take for granted the blessings we all have here! Keep inspiring us all Clay, VERY WELL DONE!!!
I like wearing a watch because it keeps me from fumbling with my phone. As soon as I pulled the phone out, I had to check the time, then I’d check for messages, then emails, I’d see missed calls… On and on and on! Now, the phone goes into airplane mode and rides in the pack for emergencies only. Quick glance at the watch and I’m back to looking where I’m supposed to be!
in reply to: Camo Face Paint #34053I’ve got a short brimmed baseball style cap with the face net built in that I just love. Haven’t painted up since I found it but when I used to, I recall that baby wipes used to clean it off quite well.
in reply to: THEY HAVE GONE TOO FAR…….. #41109I say full scale retaliatory strike! But let’s wait until fall so they think we’ve forgotten about them!
in reply to: Shooting Tips Video – With a Selfbow! #8163Great work Clay, I don’t shoot that way but I enjoy your videos and I must say I’m always jealous of your self bows! You have some real talent there! For the record… I’m on failed self bow attempt number 4! Got some new wood seasoning now so maybe by spring I can regroup and continue my soon to be published book, “How NOT to make a selfbow” LOL!
Great stuff, keep ’em coming!
in reply to: More moose mojo, please #8091I may just have to stop in there! Gonna try to make it up there next month for the public hearings on the mining. Keep ya posted on that.
in reply to: More moose mojo, please #9001I’m really excited for you. I used to apply for a tag in Maine every year, having done quite a bit of work up in that area. Beautiful country up there! And I know exactly what you mean about the old Gunflint and the North shore, you couldn’t be more right. I’ll be heading into the south central portion for this excursion. Trade ya some bear summer sausage for some Moose!!!! (Unless things don’t work out… Then I’ll trade ya some Leinenkuegels for some Sam Adams, Lol!?!?)
in reply to: More moose mojo, please #42745Very exciting Eids! Hope you have a fantastic time! Got nothing really helpful to offer but I too have struck some “drawn tag” gold and will be hunting black bear in the BWCAW for 2 weeks this fall!!! I hope we both have some extraordinary stories to share afterwards!
Best of luck to you!!!
in reply to: Workin on yer problems #53710I have found that the slower I go, the better I shoot, and the more realistic the shot feels helps even more. This past year I spent a lot more time with “bowhunting” practice rather than “target” practice. I exclusively shot one arrow at a time and used a 3D target all summer. I also picked up an old fake x-mas tree at a garage sale to help vary my shot scenario’s. I also never shoot from the same spot twice and I shoot from several different positions, standing, kneeling, sitting, etc. It really made a difference for me this year although I still haven’t quite figured out how to make an arrow fly AROUND a tree branch!?!?
