I don’t think I’ll be hunting this year. I spent my summer focused on fly tying and fly fishing. Also low on funds to get anywhere worth hunting or accessible to me. However, practice is cheap and I’m betting the range is pretty thinned out during the hunting season. So I’ve been working up some practice shafts, maybe I’ll feel confident enough by spring for a hog hunt.

But I’m siting here enjoying deer steak fresh off the grill along with mashed taters..

Have to tell you about the shot I made on the tater sometime…………

Steak…. salt, pepper, chipoltle pepper and cooked in real butter… ummm

Bet jackrabbit be way good cooked up like that. 😉

Ha, Yah, don’t shoot no turnips! Then again, I guess I’m a bit of hypocrite, I’ve shot countless hedge apples, and I never ate one!

I’ve no doubt that Jackrabbit would be most excellent if cooked up with those ingredients!

I live in Lubbock, TX. There really isn’t any public land in West, TX where a hunter can expect to have any reasonable shot at harvesting a hog, especially as a non-resident. There are private operations, but I have not used any of them. I’ve driven over to East TX a couple of times to hunt hogs on National Forest Land. There are also some East TXX WMA’s where hogs can be found, but they have more regulations concerning when and where you are allowed to hunt. All that being said I will confirm that there are spot and stalk opportunities on National Forest Lands in East TX, and in my experience it is doable; by doable, I mean that I have found hogs, stalked them and shot AT them. I’ve yet to seal the deal.

I can’t make any commitments this early, but AFTER the TX deer season closes it can be a decent time to go stomp around in swamp east TX and try to find bow hunting opportunities for hogs, between February – early May. If we can keep this dialogue going I might be willing to meet up over there and see what can be found. If you own a tandem canoe, it’s worth bringing. I only have a solo canoe, but in my experience the hogs are found in surprisingly wet areas that cannot be waded to. I found my canoe to be an essential piece of equipment for finding huntable hogs. I’ve posted a link to some pics I took from my trip. They are not compressed images, so it may take awhile to load depending on your connection and hardware.

Never tried fried jackrabbit so dunno. Like you, heard it wasn’t so great.

But then again to a hungry man lots of things become more palatable (except turnips, ain’t ‘no fixins’ can help them out) 🙁

                  Anyone??????

R2, I think you ain’t had turnips prepared the right way. Roasted Turnips or mashed turnips with lots of butter are great!

Regarding Jackbunnies, I’ve cooked them a couple of times with a friend in Arizona. We cut the rabbit into hind and front peices, and split the back in two. Then I slowly braised the rabbit in a cast iron dutch with red chili colorado sauce. It was MOST excellent.

This web-site has a few recipes for jackrabbit, my friend made some of them, and claimed they were all worth the effort. I’m of the school of thought, that if you want to kill it, you better want to eat it too!

                      Was it snaky????

I love “teeter tottering” in my canoe; I’ve been a canoe paddler for a long long time, it is my favorite way to travel and with the right know-how of where a given canoe design is stable, the teetering and tottering becomes useful for turning and positioning the canoe; i.e., paddler and canoe become one entity. To my mind, canoeing has the same appeal as these relatively simple bows that have gathered as all here.

Regarding “snaky”, the paddling was snaky in that it was very bendy sloughs and river bottoms. There were also a good number of snakes, but as an (unemployed) herpetologist I always like the presence of snakes, it honestly makes me smile to see them around.

Having lived in this state off and on since 2010, and traveled to every part of except El Paso; I find the “Hot Air” comment is broadly descriptive of the climate and populace.

I’m Back, I was posting as drew4fur, but due to an error on my part I had to change my name when I re-registered; as such, I am now DE.

I had to take a break from the forum for awhile, here are my reasons.

#1. My daughter was born (first child), on Dec. 22nd, this has kept my wife and I plenty busy.

#2. My PhD thesis had to be submitted by the end of March, having a newborn and a large document to write also kept me plenty busy.

#3. I set a goal that the day after I submitted my PhD thesis I would tie flies every day until I had box of trout flies that was completely filled. This took about three weeks, but I did it!

I look forward to chew’n the fat around here again.

                              DE
