Ed, yessir, there’s nothing more traditional than putting meat on the table. When you’re hungry, it matters little how it gets there. 😛

Doug, I never had that much trouble getting Tuskers into shape, but it’s been several years. If you think you had trouble with varying weights using a file, just wait to you touch ’em to a spinning grinder wheel! On the one hand, I always say that for turkey, anything sharp that flies well is a go. On the other hand, my limited experience putting broadheads into turks says you want the biggest heads you can find. So bottom line, so long as the weights don’t come out so radically different that they don’t fly consistently, arrow to arrow, I’d say add a penetration limiter behind them and away you go.

Far more difficult around there in many years now is finding any accessible turkeys to shoot at. All our public lands birds seem to have moved year-round to private land where the ranchers feed them and don’t allow hunting.

Best luck–it’s definitely not too early to start thinking turkey.

jgilmer and Fallguy — you two pretty much nailed it IMO: hunting fashion is set by industry and advertising, just as the bigger cultural fashion is set by industry and advertising, and wildlife law enforcement is crippled by judges who fail to understand that crimes against wildlife are crimes against people as well.

It seems to me, in the big long picture, with hunting and beyond, that shortcutting and cheating in any aspect of life makes only losers.

Jim, can you post that link here please? I love the group but have never been a fan of the website, which I find unnecessarily confusing to navigate … but I increasingly find it confusing to navigate from the rack to the head in the dark. That little magazine really shows promise and always leaves you wanting more. My dream is that it will someday be what the old Bugle used to be before RMEF went down the tubes … a rallying point for traditional-values hunters.

You’ll be all set for St. Patty’s day.

I too am glad to see this. Here’s an example of how it often pans out where baiting is legal on private lands: I have hunted with a friend in AR a couple of years on 200 acres of prime whitetail habitat with lots of deer. This friend is an ethical hunter who does not want to bait. But he is totally surround by other landowners who do bait. It is the tradition there, as anywhere it’s legal. Most of the year he has visible deer aplenty. Just before hunting seasons start the baiting heats up and most of his deer abandon his property for adjacent baited properties. And as soon as the hunting starts, even bowhunting, they go almost totally nocturnal (proven with game cams). While my friend hasn’t resorted to this yet, the pressure is tremendously heavy for even folks who don’t want to bait, to do it just to “even the odds.” To stop it, it must be illegal statewide and enforced. In W.VA where I’ve hunted, for example, baiting is illegal. Yet the locals drive around with trucks full of apples during hunting seasons, which they openly use in huge bait piles, and never get busted. Laws without teeth are worthless. Baiting isn’t hunting, period, and that’s why I’m against it. From the linked article, if you go to the home page, there’s a question box where you can enter your opinion on baiting. When I was there more than 2/3 of votes were in favor of outlawing baiting.

GOOD NEWS! As we continue to firm up the event schedule, we have just locked-on the premiere showing of Clay Hayes’ first full-length video, “The Untamed.” We’re hoping Clay will be able to be there, but if not I will intro the film, which may lead to a discussion of the woeful state of bowhunting media today. In any event here’s another reason to try and come. Here’s the preview link if you missed it first time around: https://vimeo.com/65916783

If Smithhammer shows up I assume he’ll be wearing suitable face camo. 😛

1shot– your photos and brief stories have get me fired up to try and get back down there after missing the past couple of years. Maybe next year.

Isn’t the full version of your tag line “Another beautiful day to excel … in the Marine Corps!” Took me a while to connect, as it’s now 40 years behind me, whoah!

John– welcome here! And your buddy too. I remember back to around the ’80s when the new age of metal snowshoes first came in. I think the brand was Sierra and at the time they had a lock on the hi-tech shoes, no competitors, and as businesses go, they were asses to deal with. I think and hope they’re long out of business. In any event, the new shoes–whose only really significant improvement was and is their bindings, not the flotation platforms–were advertised like crazy in high-end yuppie rags like Outside and Backpacker, showing people jumping off cornices and running and trying to make it sound like more fun than skiing “And you don’t need a ski slope!” As you know, it ain’t. Snowshoes aren’t sports cars, they are tractors. They allow people who live like I do to get around and take care of business when we couldn’t otherwise. They allow anyone to get into the winter woods. They are the toughest damn cardio and leg exercise I know of short of squat-thrusts (a favored Marine boot-camp torture). Neanderthals may well have had them. They are down to earth and practical and when viewed as a tool to help us stay outdoors, rather than an end in themselves, they are an example of good technology in a world killing itself with bad technology. Keep ‘shoeing! It’s a whole lot cheaper than a snowmobile. 😆

Welcome here Storm. In some very ancient marginal way we may be related. I understand that Petersen is the most common name in Denmark. 😀

My only comment on your otherwise excellent plans is that you are way under-gunned for moose. 500 grains is below standard for deer and off the scale too light for moose. Seriously, you owe it to yourself, because you owe it to the animal, to get the total arrow weight up to at least 700. I would want more like 900. Don’t expect to hear this from any outfitter, even the best, as their income depends on clients so they are all professional optimists. Two-blade is a good choice, depending on the weight, MA and FOC. If you’re unfamiliar with those abbreviations, check out the Ashby Library on this site. The best and most successful and most admirable hunters always are pessimists. Best luck.

Thank you sincerely, every one. It was great fun and could not have happened in another magazine other than TBM. They always gave me free rein to hang myself. I am deeply grateful. Dave
