in reply to: Carbon bare shaft tuning question #41050
J Westbrock–
Thanks, I had thought about making a Jig for a dremel tool, and I will definitely check out the Harbor freight saw !– as DWC asked what is best { blade} fot cutting Carbons!
scoutin reply to: Scentless waterproof spray? #40797Dave –
Not sure about the orange bottle scentless Waterproofing. If I find some I will check it out.
I heartily agree with the “good whiskey” comment [ For medicinal purposes only of course]. However I thought cognac was for mid – afternoon girl watching from a sidewalk cafe on the “Champs Elysees” in Paris ?!?
Scoutin reply to: Carbon bare shaft tuning question #40749Since we are talking about cutting down Carbons in small/accurate increments. I was wondering what other members use to accomplish this. I have tried a numbered of field expedient methods, not all wildly successful. I am trying to avoid paying $250.00 for the advertised cutters.
Scout.in reply to: What is TOO Heavy? #40743Bounty Hunter —
Cool Arrow — Looks like something the Southern Plains tribes would have used.
I am not familiar with Laminated Birch – is it Normally that much heavier than other woods?
Scoutin reply to: Carbon bare shaft tuning question #40734DWC —
I find that the Carbons seem to hold up better for stumping, especially heavier / collared ones, though nothing lasts a long time in my part of the SW{rocks }. Check them good after each use! I find carbons can be damaged but unless you flex them, you might not notice. With Aluminum it is usually obvious when they are done.

Sorry about your fathers BW bow. Good luck with the Ocala. It was my first bow{same Poundage} and I took My first Big Game { PA wt buck}with it in 1970. I still have it and shoot it. I hope your Ocala will be as lucky for you as mine was for me.

Yes Sir – I believe you are correct. I also can sing most of the TV westerns from 50s-60s too, haha. My friends say I would of had a great mind, if I hadn’t filled it with trivia—
Scoutin reply to: My Setup Adequate for Elk??? #37690Maybe Robin [ The web Mom] was having a lil fun with you.
the night before christmas and all thru the house – not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
dasher -dancer -prancer- vixen -comet -cupid -donner and Blitzen + rudolph — it is scary sometimes what one remembers –haha

Going for the St Nick audience — I do understand – people are always asking me to stand in for him { white Hair and Beard }- and I get asked if- I ever won the Hemingway Contest in the Keys, HAHA — not as tactical however
Scoutin reply to: My Setup Adequate for Elk??? #37487Doc – Roger that!
I just picked up a couple in different spine to experiment with–and then wait for the big sale to purchase what I need after following your very well written post on tuning. great call — wally world is every where [ for the good, and the bad – and I understand the bad – having lived in the “middle of nowhere in a couple places* ] I travel alot – and it is nice to know that I can pick up “ammo” if I need it! Yea, I carry the necessary items to rebuild an Arrow if required. they might not be pretty, but could save the day under dire circumstance -haha especially in the West! A lot fewer Trad Bow stores in easy reach– at least here in the SW.
Scout* written up and documented according to the 1890-92 census
for the close of the “Frontier”– some of those places are still as they were** – 2 of which are – Sandhills of NE / and West Texas [ big bend area] I have lived/ worked in both – still almost as they were. Scary part – there are wally worlds -in easy reach of them !
too many people on the planet — good habitat is worth it’s weight in gold!** no# of people per Sq Mile– NE still had local school houses — just like the Old West {until Recent} all ages –

Thanks, I figured as much on the ” Pile Driver” – the write up didn’t sound like it did, what they claimed.
Good Call on wally world, I just went down there and picked up some CE shafts.
Scoutin reply to: My Setup Adequate for Elk??? #37007Dave – Dr Ed
I was looking in 3r catolog and saw CE “Pile Driver” shafting with “Built in Weight foward Technology” — sounds good .

Did you vacuum pack the ragbag yourself or get it that way?
sounds like a cheap easily replaceable tgt set up —
Scoutin reply to: Broadhead Targets #35664Fubar -Dave –
Thanks for the response, I have a similiar [ Black] tgt that works as you say. I use it in the back yard but is becoming ” sliced to threads “. I remember your sandpit range. Unfortunately all the sand near me is full of rocks – haha. My 6″ deep tgt lets them pass almost [sometimes all] all the way thru or caught by the fletch. I retired it. my 2″deep one is 20+yrs old. it is designed for BHs and catches carbons/tuffheads with about 10” of arrow sticking out the back. I take it to camp [ if I am near the truck ] for practice and is holding up so far. I wish I could find something similiar to replace it-but havn’t seen anything as portable. I have ordered the brass field points. However I still like to shoot BHs regularly.
Thanks
Scoutin reply to: Tuffhead update #33386Dr Ashby –
Thanks for the extensive response. I just put a couple tuffheads on 2 easton axis carbon 400 shafts and stepped outside, they shot very well out of one of my heavier lbows.
I noticed the large, long internal ferral and was wondering how best to solve/harden the set up so it would stay together. You answered that before I asked! Very much appreciate your advice.
