      Ripforce-

I am in total agreement !—

Always check your arrows –especially if they strike the tgt oddly — any kind of deflection. I have noted -that the nock area is easily damaged when the arrow is “kicked sideways” or turned where it strikes something hard at an angle—–

        tkohlhorst-

You are not a freak —

just check your arrows, I practice from all angles — I have a small canyon for a back yard- I place tgts in differing positions and rarely shoot{ more than 2 arrows} from the same place twice { teaching my mind to automatically compensate for the different ranges/ angles – what folks like to call “instinctive”}this causes the arrows to strike the tgts at differ- angles etc{ shoot 5-6 before pulling] and i hit arrows at odd places on the shaft [ when I am in trim or miss the backing when not]- It is best to check, whenever you are not sure—

If your trng is realistic and “pushing the envelope” you will damage arrows—[or starting out and developing your accuracy]

I am in the PA medical journal for having a wooden arrow explode and pieces of it penetrate my thumb! I did not shoot wood for many years believing that they were at fault!

The reality is I did not constantly check my arrows ESPECIALLY on a miss or odd hit in practice. I have since that time [ 1970 ]had a carbon come apart at the fletch[a couple years ago ].this was right after a backstop miss which caused the arrow to deflect and I did not check it thoroughly. I believe it was damaged and came apart on the next shot [ luckily just a B&B mark on my arm].I now look at each arrow carefully after any miss or stump shot.IF, I have discovered cracks at either end – I retire the arrow.

Modern carbons are very tough [ I shoot gold tip a lot]and last a long time –BUT here in the SWest – a lot a rock beats them up eventually.

simple fix – if the shot is not in the backing — inspect the arrow —

PS — look closely along the entire shaft AND — bend it at all sections to check for cracks/breaks

It was .38 Special cases — but can’t remember what size wood shaft, it has been so long since I used them { the cases for blunts /not wood shafts }—I believe it was 5/16ths – although i think it would work for 11/32s also depending on how you taper/sand the tip of the shaft.

Another vote for Velcro ! Comes on Centaur Bows {where I first saw it} works great – long lasting, easy, cheap replacement.

                        Great article David ! {beautifully written as usual}

Here in AZ/NM Improper Offroad use has become Epidemic! H–L they drive right up/around tanks-wallows-waterholes to check for sign!? I noticed the comments{huffington post} on your article were not positive. I am sure there are folks who drive ORV’s properly -but i see a lot of evidence of the other. I think some of this is the “Runnin and gunnin” attitude fostered by the “Famous” hunters on the “Outhouse Channels”. Too much emphasis on the success of the hunt, instead of the Joys of the process and being in wonderfull wild country! –What’s left of it!

Good Choice, I have not personally used that model but they are supposed to be very nice -and fairly light for 10x42s.

Give us a report after you have used them awhile.

I hunt NM, AZ & TX mostly, AZ 30lbs min — NM “any Bow and Arrows” –TX no min draw. I do Not know the laws pertaining to a legal alien bringing a hunting bow in/out of the US. Probably have to check with Customs.

                                velozero –

If you decide to stay with the 10x42s or any other larger bino than the mini’s [as Dave mentioned, which are Very convenient!]. I find a chest harness {to carry them-} for me works very well. Allows fairly easy access for glassing, and are out of the way when one needs to shoot. Most of the big outfits sell them –Leupold/swarovski etc.

Yes,as Hubertus said, get the Binoculars first [ the best you can afford]as they help you find the object that the Spotting Scope enlarges/enhances. You will use the binoculars way more than a Spotting Scope. I carry 9/10x mostly, but I have used Binos all my life and I hunt in the West – where more power is helpful imho.
