You are hard on the track —
650grs+arrowweight and 20%+ Efoc are the start numbers –“proceed sirs” from there—
The reason for the steel/brass Inserts/adapters etc -is arrow integrity — so it all stays together when the going gets tough — if you analize most of your arrow failures [broken when/ hitting game/ hunting]in the “olden times” {pre Doc Ashby} the Bh broke off [alum adapts/inserts].

wraps are for “pretty” and so you know I love Beautiful Bows & arrows – but that is secondary to efoc, if that is what you are trying to attain!

It was in “Winter Respite” By TJ Conrads, Apr/May 12.
I had mentioned that the locals { I hunt and Have friends in the area], all said what your article mentions, and Mr Conrads did also { He originally – of course in the art }. Marfa has become quite the little art colony. Not exactly what one would expect for the “Blood and Thunder Reputation of the Big Bend of Texas.

everything I have used { mostly leathers w/wo hair & velcro recently] eventually wears [shoot daily]. I have not tried these but they should be tuffer —
google up Eagle’s Flight Archery for Beaver Tail, and Alaska Bowhunting supply for Seal Skin [ although I have not seen them advertise it for awhile}

in reply to: steel inserts #62296yes, heavier head effects spine. all of it will have an effect – depending “how much? how long” and where”?
Basically as I understand it, as I am new to this also [only been at it a little over a year+ and Doc, Dave or Troy hopefully will chime in – if I get off track].You want an arrow weight of 650+ [ bone penetration thresh-hold]over 20% efoc and as much as you can get! 30% + is better.. using carbon I have managed 730gr arrows with 28.5% efoc pretty easily,I have not tried alum.

in reply to: Today's Scout #61828Fresh Bear sign always adds a little spice to the outing —
Saw a young BBear [150 lbs approx] on my scout to the gila a week and a half ago. I was working my way back to the truck at dusk after glassing an old burn and caught him flatfooted in the canyon{ 75yds away]. Watched each other for awhile and then he decided to continue on up the side of the canyon, always fun to see. I also ran into a “Bachelor Band” of 7 mature Mule Deer Bucks! most I have seen together in a long time. In an area I had not seen much deer in the past. Saw quite a few Elk – Including a three some of good Bulls. All in one Day!
I was checking some areas North of the { whitewater fire} big burn – It looks like a lot of animals moved in to the area I hunt. I hope they hang around till the season starts –haha

Go to Ashby Library here on the site, and look up FOC chart
If I understood your No#s correctly it looks to be a little over 20.5% foc–
keep at it, looks like you are on the right track for your home made “Heavy Inserts”

Sounds Like an interesting experiment, should definitely get you efoc and a strong shaft! If you are successful with these shafts hunting, you will be able to say –” you nailed em clean , Pilgrim” –haha

in reply to: Glove grooves #58109DC-
I prefer a glove also. I need them “shot in”{grooved} to shoot my best.
I prefer the control the glove gives me especially hunting.I might be able to shoot a slightly tighter group with a tab on the range.

Haha – you made me look em up — apparently there are 3 kinds
The woodchuck [back east -but apparently can be found as far north as alaska [ lowlands]and the Rock chuck [ hoary and Yellow bellied ? hmm ] Global warming? maybe farming?
Fun to hunt no matter which name–
