Always liked that bow – owned a couple over the years. That brace height is in the ball park as I recall . Factory says 8 – 9 . You made out like a bandit, great hunting bow. Shooting off the shelf is the ” only” way– haha. Enjoy
If it is an older one I’d beware of using a fast flight string —

I noticed they are not listed on the Asbell web site. Ron Laclair used to carry them I think , but noticed they are not anymore – different maker now. Might try ebay.
Best to try what webmom suggested and contact him directly —

I am sure there are ticks and chiggers somewhere in NM , I just have not found them ( luckily). One of the reasons I like it here , haha. Spent a lot of time in the mtn ranges of NM and AZ, rainy season mosquitos are what I end up putting anti bug ointments on for (bugs are going to get us in the end)! An acquaintance I know died of complications from Nile so I am kinda alerted to protecting against same now.
Started hunting in NM in 1971 – yes on the way cheaper license, and over the counter for deer / bear and rifle turkey* in the fall. Hunted the Guadalupe a couple times when I first arrived, but found it too crowded for me- Gila is still my preferred stomping grounds.
* hunting turkey with rifle in the fall went away many yrs ago and now its back. Not sure what the reasoning for that is, since we are not overpopulated with turkey at this time —getting real hard to draw here – I did not draw any licenses. Have to hunt otc archery deer in AZ this fall and visit friends to hunt deer and pigs in TX.

Best good luck for a quick fix and full recovery for Lyme—I bath in bug juice before I wander around in any woods known to harbor the evil blood suckers! Living and wandering about the SW desert mountains they aren’t much of a bother. When I go to TX I have to mind my Ps and Qs. Good luck!
Although we do have the Nile virus here – not sure what’s worse – dang zombie bugs

Sounds like a great time with good folks. Rare to find a club with that kind of camaraderie these days. Although I think it is still fairly common among the trad bow crowd. What you describe is the kind of ” competition ” I prefer nowadays — I guess I am getting ” long in the tooth* ” ” feels like far” haha

* always amused by this saying since most critters ( myself included )get worn- shorter teeth with age ! Haha

Thanks for the comment, googled it and found reference to medieval archery – tgts and ranges —
A willow wand* apparently was a wood tgt 6ft tall by 6 inches wide ( aprox) often at 100yds ( 15 score ft?) I also saw a mention and map of Finsbury Fields an area in London used for archery in the 1400s that had tgts ranging out to 345 yds—
* one source said this was thought to represent a castle shooting opening ( loophole/ arrow firing slit —

Yea, it’s interesting that the computer search engines don’t give a very definitive answer – score is kind of an enigma -good to have a few of those hanging around.

Yes – 300 yds very possibly – extreme range for the longbow from my historical readings or :
Score just means 20 of whatever – 15score yards = 300 — 15 score feet = 300ft / 100yds – I think – haha, best I can figure –

Wikipedia says a score is A unit of measure denoting 20 ( checked to verify my memory, which is suspect these days – haha) it can be time or distance – 20 of anything –
“4 score and 7 yrs” is 87 yrs. Gettysburg address – time since declaration of independence for instance.
In England ( what is the authors nationality? ) it could be yards or rods (5.5 ft)

in reply to: Can you consistently hit a paper plate? #137608Good practice set up – sounds like to me —
I am mostly a ground blind/ stand hunter these days. My range is in a small steep little Arroyo behind my house – allows me to shoot some uphill/ downhill shots, just in case.

Yes, I too prefer tgts sized similar to the game (like your feed bag set up) I am training for- plus I like to place them at a ( average) proper height off the ground for said critter. This helps me simulate all aspects of the hunting shot at game for instinctive shooting ( at least i like to hope so )- which I do.
Ferguson quote is great- one of those easy to do in theory – but difficult in practice , at least for me.

I go back and forth on wether it is preferable to shoot at blank targets ( of various sizes imitating game ) to force myself to pick a spot, or use of an artificial aiming point ( paper plate). I realize if you group your arrows in the correct area you have a self made aiming point. At least the first shots are at a spot i have to pick. I also have a number of tgts at the back stop, at varying heights off the ground to make me adjust my aim etc. Currently I am preferring the blank tgt set up. Your thoughts
