in reply to: hog hunting ranches. #60464i guess i was just raised traditionally but it boggles me wy anyone would pay a ranch especially for some dum swine.i have killed dozens of the things in the coastal marshes.i have never payed anyone for a hunt and never will. i will not use a guide either if i cant learn how to do it myself then i dont need to hunt it,to date i have konquered every animal species i have taken on ,especially ducks and woodcock.
in reply to: For those of you that hunt with wood arrows #60460personally i do not think carbon shafts are superior but rather inferior, the only way i see fit to practice is stump shooting and carbon does not hold up like wood i recently purchased a hal doz carbon express terminator select, on the target they flew really good but stump shooting rendered three useless the first day,the cause turned out to be that the shock of an arrow hitting dirt or anything causes vibration and that vibration blew my nocks out and split the arrow.so i decided to try aluminium but still find that when it comes to it a wood arrow, plane old cedar can take 10 times the punishment of other materials i still have 7 custom port cedar arrows from suzanne st charles from 2 years ago all of wich are getting close to being done.however i have thus far had 4 different sets of carbon arrows in the last 3 years all of wich are destroyed.i beg you go wood
in reply to: Dad….This ones for you! (pics) #59995my dad is currently working in wisconsin a welder in another year i will be goin home to welding school and to start my life.hunting with my dad is truly a sacred ordeal and i hunt and fish with him in excess of 100 days a year.but i have now been against my will in wisconsin for three years. my grandfather whom i always looked to for wisdom and advice and whom taught me most of what i know has had diabetes for a long time and i only hope that in one year he still has e few years left to spend with me.
in reply to: For those of you that hunt with wood arrows #59987great choice wood arrows had plenty success hunting hogs with them
in reply to: Greed…the difference between rifle and bow hunters #59974i have mentioned on many other posts that i mostly gun hunt and bow practice.see for many people especially in the north they have come to tkink that huntig is just for the experience, that the kill is only a small part of it.true hunters know better, and the idea that hunters go through cycles it is truly proposterous.whate do you think the native americans would have thaught of such ideas 150 years ago.i have met many greedy people but the worst has always been the sad sap that calls a warden on another.my dad always said it now i do as well the guy who calls on a person for shooting doves or shooting a cottontail in the spotlight is greedy and to lasy to do it themselves.you must understand however in louisiana things are extremely differrent.the vast majority of true cajuns the ones who still mostly live off the land my family included do not listen to laws we hunt as we see fit and kill what and only what we need.that is many things.summer time finds us catching sackalay all day and frogging all night a good night well get 150 or so.september 1 means doves sept 18 means teal, october means squirrell and rabbit, november means regular duck season.we in louisiana are verry fond of traditions for 4 generations of my family have hunted grobec and beacraush sadly one generation ago one was outlawed the other is a federal bird and has never been legal to hunt.if you would like a translation as to whate those birds are called in english just ask.
in reply to: Which Broadhead ? #49942i think a zwicky would be good.I THINK A SINGLE BEVEL HEAD WOULD BE BETTER,LOOK AT THE ASHBY LIBRARY.
in reply to: hog hunting ranches. #48809I AM FROM LOUISIANA AND PERSONALLY HAVE KILLED MANY SEMI WILD HOGS WITH A GUN AND 5 WITH A LONGBOW.NOW HERE IS WHAT I WOULD DO IF I WERE A NORTHERN YANKEE OR UDDER NON HOG BEARING STATE.I WOULD NOT THINK TWICE ABOUT GIVING MY MONEY TO A GUY WHO BUYS HOGS AT A SALE BARN.SOME YEARS BACK A FELLER BAUGHT THE LARGE LOT OF WOODS IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE I WOULD HUNT SQUIRRELLS IN THESE WOODS BUT HE RUINED THAT BUT ANYWAY HE HAD ALL SORTS OF EXOTICS IN HIS HIGH PEN OF OBOUT 150 TO 200 GIVE OR TAKE ACRES.AS IS THE CASE IN MORE AND MORE PLACES HE BAUGHT HAOGS AT A SALE BARN THOSE HOGS WERE WILD, MOST OF THEM ANYWAY, THEY WERE TRAPPED AN HOUR OR SO FROM THERE IN THE COASTAL MARSHES REGION OF THE STATE WHERE THERE WERE HOGS FOR AS LONG AS WE CAN REMEMBER LONG STORY SHORT IT IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO CONTAIN WILD HOGS IN IN A PEN INCOMPASSING THAT AMOUNT OF ACERAGE AND THERE ARE NOW WILD HOGS IN EVERY DIRECTION FOR 15 MILES OF THAT PLACE.MY ADVICE IS TO CONTACT THE CONSERVATION DEPARTMENTS OF GEORGIA OR ALABAMA OR MISSISIPPIE OR LOUISIANA AND FIND OUT WHERE THE LARGES AMOUNT OF DAMAGE HAS BEEN DONE TO PROPERTY IN THAT AREA.OTHER THAN THAT THE ONLY PLACE I CAN THINK OF TO SEND A PERSON IS A PLACE CALLED CAT ISLAND LOUISIANA IM NOT SURE AS I HAVE NEVER BEEN THERE BUT HAVE BEEN TOLD BY MANY PEOPLE THAT THERE ARE PLENTY OF WILD HOGS THERE IT SHOULD BE CLOSE TO ST FRANCASSVILLE{ NOT SURE ABOUT THAT SPELLING} LOUISIANA. CAT ISLAND IS A PUBLIC PLACE.PERSONALLY I WOULD TRY CONTACTING EACH OF THE LISTED STATES FIRST.YALL ARE NOT ME MAYBEE YOU WOULD PREFER TO PAY HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS GET FED A GREAT MEAL EACH NIGHT AND MAYBEE HUNT A WILD PIG OR AS IN MY EXPERIENCE A RELEASED PIG IN ANY SENCE IF YOU ARE WILLING TO BE PACIENT AND CONTACT EACH OF THOSE STATES I GUARANTEE YOU CAN HUNT PIGS WITHOUT PAYING ANYONE.THE IDEA OF A PAID HUNT DISGUSTS ME
in reply to: Coming out of the hunting closet #45291from my experience of now 5 fresh years shooting a stick i would definitely say go with the wheels kill something with an arrow its still more challenging than you could ever imagine as a matter of fact if you are like me i would say hunt each season with the wheels untill you get to the point that you dont shake dont get nervous or anything of the sort then using a rediculously light draw stick bow no more than 45 lb kill a deer.that is if you are as relaxed in the woods as me and can ever really get used to being in the presence of a deer, apparently some folks cant get over the shakes no matter how many they see or shoot.well have fun getting bored sitting on a bucket i never could, tended to be more interested in chasing the squirrells on the yonder ridge with a 22.
in reply to: Conflicting Emotions about gun hunting… #9688i have been shooting traditional bows for a few years, hunting in my family can be traced back to no end,my dad his dad my dads grandfather and the same on my moms side my dads dad was a commercial fisherman for many many years as well,i still remember raising crawfish nets with him,and the last few years he did it after his stroke i was in charge of 175 of his nets i baught my own bait when i couldnt catch shad wich i normally could,in three years i made well over 4 grand and have not spent a penny of that money i set it aside and spent only the money i made cutting hay, neighbors grass and spring sheep selling, from my, at the time 45 sheep.i have never been to a public school only home school,i am now a junior,i only do 2 hours of school a day,two subjects, however i do school year round therefore doing just as much as everyone else.i can say i have the life that everyone wants, i can hunt or fish every day of the year.i unlike most kids that are home schooled have many friends and i am quite popular the only problem is most of them are just freeloaders who know i can take them on better hunts than most guides.i am blessed with a half dozen or so true friends all hillbillys and rednecks,as well as a great girl that i recently got into traditional bowhunting as well she just killed her first hog with her trdbow on my grandfathers back fifty.hunting and fishing is my life,i mostly like the idea of traditional bows and although i do like shooting them i find deer hunting gun or bow as boring as hunting can be.i am a shotgunner above all nothing comes before duck and woodcock hunting,to date i have killed a woodcock and duck with my bow both were sitting still, and yes i cheated,by having my mom who works the dog carry my bow and arrows, and when the shot prevented itself i handed her my benelli shotgun automatic and shot the birds with the bow.besides shotgunning for any bird species, my second passion is squirrell with a 22, a 22 is the most deadly gun in the world bottom line, my choice is the ruger 10/22 with a heavy bull barrel . 920 diameter and target bullets.hunting is my life a like the challenge of the bow every now and then although i like to shoot it every day and can hold my own with compound shooting friends hunting with the bow is really not that funt to me.i also to a certain extent do not believe in limits i live in a family of four a can say that we have not purchased meat in many years, a connot remember the last time, if you eat what you kill there is nothing wrong with that.i say do whatever makes you happy, just not trophy hunting only meat hunting,or as i would say sport hunting and the best meat in the world, the person who would say gun hunting is wrong, is not a challenge, is truly a fool.sorry for the length of this, have fun relax enjoy hunting enjoy the meat enjoy life.I AM A TRUE CAJUN OF THE DEEP SOUTH CENTRAL LOUISIANA THAT IS MY OPINION.GODSPEED
what is it with people and complaining about bad arrow flight,i have shot arrows spined from 45 to 70 spine on my 60lb bow as long as they were strait they flew strait.if yall really got that mutch trouble with arrow flight i want to know the makers of your bows so that i never by one.not to sound rude but really why so mutch trouble with arrow flight,i have straitened shoots over a fire fletched them with 5 in helical feathers and killed squirrells with them, they fly just fine.i want to know why do yall have sutch a hard time with good flight and,in fact would like to know whate the heck tuning an arrow even means.one more thing i agree that hickory is tough i made a few arrows to play with out of oak dowwels, tougher than anything i have ever shot.
in reply to: Donating meat? #45351uh greaterarcher why don”t you manage those does for your friend,i mean if he needs them removed and you know people who need meat i see no problem.i also see no problem with donating meat but i could never do sutch a thing because i can barely keep meat in my two freesers between the end and beginning of hunting season.also as i am sure you intend to do i would also make sure to offer meat to people i know before giving it to a soup kitchen.
in reply to: Favorite meal while out hunting #45331my favorite meal although not usually while out hunting them but rather at home after the hunt is buffalo frogs legs.you”ll need salt, pepper, flower, cornmeal, about 6 eggs per dozen legs,12 bull frog legs per person, and that sauce that you put on chicken wings for buffalo wings.first you season your frog legs with salt pepper, then dip them in egg,you should have your flower and cornmeal together in a bag,now put the frog dipped in egg in the flower cornmeal, and fry.when frying is done put the wing sauce in a bag and lightly mix the fryed legs untill well covered with sauce.now we have only done this twice so far,but we then take the legs with sauce on thim and with really hot oil lightly fry the sauce to them, however i think a light baking in the oven would work two
in reply to: The Running Woodsman #44596a few weeks ago i saw a verry young rabbit and just kept walking towards it,of course i got about 25 yards from him and he jumped in the bushes.i have seen many times that same little rabbit and he remembers me for i can now walk up to the side of him set down 2 feet away from him and watch him eat for 47 minutes.in fact he really liked the watermellon rind i brung him yesterday,he proceded to eat it as soon as i put it down,he was cautious but after about 7 minutes he closed the 2 feet distance and started eating at my feet.but the amasing thing is it only knows me,my mom cannot get near him,my girl tried all day today but every time she approached me and the rabbit he would jump in.
in reply to: To burn or cut is the question? #44564greaterarcher i read that you shoot 4 in feathers, that is interesting.everyone i ever talked too insisted i had to have 5 in,that it was difficult to get good flight with 4 in,but as you say you read in tbmag how to make your own fletch so did i,probably as you were experimenting with that so was i.my results showed me that with my woodsman heads i could get good flight with extremely short fletch,in fact my arrows fly perfectly with 3 in helical.but i decided just from doubts to go with 4in.oh yeah i did a few traditional shoots in my location in witch i was using 2 and a half in feathers,i did verry well,in the top 5.
