in reply to: Eastern Elk #48266
I’m hoping the herd will be successful in VA. He shot it in Russell County where it is still legal to check a bull or cow in on the corresponding deer tag. It’s nice to know they’re migrating that far from the original release sites though. Buchanan, Wise, and Dickenson counties are the restoration zone. (Lots of reclaimed strip mine land)
in reply to: Eastern Elk #46708No, I live in North East TN, so I’m about an hour from the KY line. Last I checked the archery cow tag odds were 1 in 68 or something close to that, but the bull tags are 1 in 500 and something. I’m banking on the cow tag! I won’t get to go hunt in Colorado for awhile, but I can afford the KY now if I draw. A guy shot a bull this past year that had migrated down into Virginia where I grew up, so maybe one of these days the elk will be re-established in the East. I just hope I’ll see it.
in reply to: Cat Quiver #44578I’ve used mine for small game and stumping quite a bit, but I’ve gravitated towards the Asbell style side quiver this season.
in reply to: Something to get your blood pumping.. #57653Great! I like the shots of the campsite at night.
in reply to: Turn for the better #50395Nice! Glad to hear you got rid of the release heebee jeebee’s:D
in reply to: Finally—back in the fold #47279Glad to hear you made it down here! Give me a shout once you get settled!
in reply to: Scary Close #43534I’ll add one. Once when I was about 15, I went squirrel hunting with a buddy and his dad across the road from their house. We’d made it halfway through a nice oak flat chasing fox squirrels when I heard a shot. Then another, and another. pretty soon there were whizzes and zings all around our heads and we were hitting the dirt. Whoever was shooting was apparently target practicing with what sounded like a .22. Thank The Lord we didn’t get hit. Short of my waterfowling, I wear orange every time I venture out during rifle season.
in reply to: Footing for gt 7595 traditional #34800I just looked last night because I’m building more arrows. I use a GT 5575 and a 2213 fits nicely for a footing. I epoxied the first ones I did, and they eventually popped off 😕 I’ve started superglueing them now, so we’ll see how that goes.
in reply to: New Arrows #33123What weight did you end up with at your spine in maple? I’m debating getting maple from Kevin next year.
in reply to: New Arrows #31493Schweet! Nice clean work. 😀
in reply to: Bow Building #30524Thanks everyone, it’s all very helpful. I’ll search for that thread as soon as I get done typing here. I don’t think I’ll keep track of my expenditures at first, unless I get good enough to sell em’! I’ve looked at the Bingham’s kit, and I really like the hybrid longbow they have. I’d really like to use heat strips instead of a hotbox though.
in reply to: Nonresidents and Wilderness #12766I hope to one day make it out west to hunt elk and mulies, and I honestly hope it never comes to mandatory guided hunts for non-residents. I can understand the need for some folks to use a guide, and if I could afford to hunt sheep or bears in Alaska, I would follow the law and hire a guide.
The allure of hunting the west to me is adventure and part of that is the planning process. I understand that some folks don’t have or make time to scout/plan and that some folks just don’t want to plan a hunt and have everything done for them. I feel like this law definitely puts a dent in the idea that public lands are held in public trust.
in reply to: Nonresidents and Wilderness #12536+1 Smith. Unfortunately it all boils down to the Benjamins.
in reply to: My First Traditional Kill #10429Nice Doe! Good tracking.
