in reply to: Anybody Shoot Howard Hills? #39044
Congrats on getting your new bow. I’ve never shot one but I shot with a guy the other day that had one and I liked a lot more that I thought I would. The classic D shape really grew on me.
in reply to: Stain/Seal/Cap/Crest/Glue Compatibility #24161After staining I dip mine in the 3 rivers gasket lac. It works great and puts on a smooth finish. I put on my feathers on with the fletching tape. For me it works great. You just gotta put a dab of glue on the front of the feather. But so far it has worked out really good
in reply to: Silencer Mystery…? #54286I hand twisted strands of my Siberian Huskys sheaded hair into yarn strands and put them in the string. Produced a pretty good cloud of hair in the air for the first several shots(ive got too much time on my hands haha). There not much to look at but someone stole that dog from my house and I hate to get rid of them. I’ve also got a set of musk-ox (spell check) wool and they have been in for about a year or more and I love em.
in reply to: She's finally gone… #31440I just sold my Hoyt compound about three days before christmas. Good Riddens. After shooting my curve for a while had absoultly no interest in going back to that thing. Ive tried to get my girlfriend involved but shes not caught the bug yet although her eight year old little boy likes to go out with me. Hes shoots my old Bear Little Bear Ive had since I was pretty little. The 28 pound draw is still a little much for him but hes almost there. He set down with me while I was painting some crest on some woods and he had to make of his own. (Oak dowl rod haha) but ended up looking pretty good. Now if I can just get my dad to come over from the dark side and stop shooting compound. hahaha.
in reply to: My first shot at a deer #42087Don’t feel bad man I have missed two this year (for the same reason as you). No worries. Everyone is talking about Buck Fever like its a bad thing. True it accounts for bad shots and misses but think about it for a second, would you really want to be rid of the body shaking and the shaky voice and heart pounding out of you chest and the cold sweat and that knot in your throat that makes the next swallow hard to get down. I mean missing sucks and makes your stomach feel like its somewhere around your ankles but if you hit everything you shot at you wouldn’t want to do it anymore. You can’t be thankful and appreciate the good without experiencing the bad.
I’ve never used one but I read and article in TBM a while back about making shafts and in there they used one after turning them from square stock. In the article they heated theirs up in a frying pan hot enough to where water sizzled on it and then ran the shaft through it. Like I said I’ve never used one only read about them so my advice might be like peeing in the wind haha. The one in the article was bought at 3 Rivers.
in reply to: Grunting 101 #37766I’m with Shawhill, I just use the Primos brand. Not saying that the others arent good I just haven’t tried them. I used to have the biggest one that Shawhill was talking about but I got rid of it. Didn’t like the sound of it at all. I just seen the long one the other day. It sounded pretty good too (sounded good in my opinion anyway). I live and hunt in middle tennessee and I’d say it does depend on where in the country you are hunting but I have heard does make this sound before. Who knows…it all comes down to luck anyway. haha..Happy hunting
in reply to: Grunting 101 #36484The says on the call that its and estrus bleat but I was watching two does at pretty close range earlier this year and I heard one of them calling to the other and is sounded just like the “can” but a little shorter and this was back in TN bow season so it was before the rut. All I know is that it works pretty dang good
in reply to: Grunting 101 #34496I’ve rattled for years but I’ve never tried it with a certain sequence. I’ve never been fortunate enough to witness two bucks fighting. I’ve only seen it on tv and who knows if what they show is actually whats really happening or what has lead up to the fight. I usually wait about 30 minutes between rounds. Depending on the time of year is how hard or soft I hit the horns together. But I never had a lot of luck with it though so maybe Duncans way is better, it makes sence anyway. I have had a lot of luck with a call called The Can. There is a couple of different makers out there but mine is made by Primos. They make three or four different sizes. I use the medium size and have had quite a few bucks come straight to it. It was the reason I my first shot off at at buck this year. It was walking away from me at about thirty-five yards and I put the call behind my back and flipped it a couple of times and it turned straight around and came straight toward my tree. Unfortunatly the call worked better than my shooting….missed. hahaha
in reply to: Waterproofing feathers?? #10121They make a powder that is suppost to work but I’ve only used it on about 5 arrows or so and it didn’t seem to work but there was a good chance I didn’t do something right. I tried some of that spray silicone and it didn’t work much either so a bag over them for me seems to be the thing that works for me.
in reply to: Should Traditional bowhunting be more mainstream? #10120I hope it doesn’t get to mainstream. I don’t think it will either. There to much money to be made in “the next big thing” of compound archery. You can’t open a bowhunting mag (except for TBM) and not have 300 and whatever feet per second from ” the newest and baddest pulley contraption” thrown in your face on every other page. I used to love all bowhunting mags but over the past two or three years I can’t even stand to open them. Its all advertising, something that is pretty annoying to me as I am sure it is to just about every person that shoot traditional. I have friends that use compounds and even my Dad uses one. Its not that I have a problem with people that use them its the industry that I have problems with. They try to convince that you have to be shooting over 300 feet per second to be able to kill an animal. Not to mension how much the stinking things cost. Ive got 1300 dollars worth of compound just setting in a box that ever since I got into traditional I have no interest in even shooting. Hadent touched it in a year and got it out before bow season to shoot with my Dad and with the use of sights and on the first shot hit exactly where I was “aiming” It took one round for me to loose interest and put it down and it went up for sale (no takers yet haha). I just get tired of the market trying to convince that they can shoot as good as the money they put into it not to mension the fenced in slaughter houses they call hunting lodges. You can kill as big of a buck as YOUR WILLING TO PAY FOR!!!! NO RESPECT FOR THE ANIMAL. Sorry for jabbering on and on
in reply to: Twist in my log #57305Yeah the twist is about 90 degrees over about and eight foot span. I would call that a pretty bad twist. haha I was thinking about using it for laminating strips but I don’t now I’m pretty bummed out about it. Thanks for the help
in reply to: Arrow shaft making #54151Go to http://www.leevalley.com. They have a dowel cutter especially for arrows. The part number for the insert is 05J45.22. That should be for the 11/32″ cutter. That should lead you to everything you need from there. I also read in TBM (I think) some time back that you can take a 3/8″ dowel cutter from the same place. Part number 05J60.01. That has an adjustable blade and with a small shim under the blade and be brought down to cut a 11/32″ dowel. It needs to be clamped in a vice but it is a much cheeper way to go to get the shaft. Also read that after turning the arrow that it needs to be put through a Heat Compression Block. 3 Rivers has those. But I’ve never made any arrows myself and there is people on this forum and know a lot more about it than I do but that is where you can the parts. If that doesn’t get you to the website then let me know
