in reply to: New Kota Prarie fire! #34910
I must say I couldnt be happier with this pair of bows!
I know there are so many great Bowyers out there it tough to decide but i looked at quite a few bows before ordering my first Kots after that I was sold on them.
in reply to: Martin Archery #34899Ive owned several of their bows and all were well constructed nice shooting bows and they sell for very good pricing. ive owned four of their reucrves and one longbow that my brother still shooots i ourchased it over 20 years ago.
in reply to: how many arrows for hunting? #32532Being the fine shot that I am i usually have my bearers carry a couple hundred arrows! No actually i use a bow quiver and only carry three brodheads and one jubo tipped cedar shaft.
in reply to: New longbow! #24692Beautiful bow.
in reply to: tournament question #16913ill shoot any distance with a wooden arrow! now understand i never said i was going to hit my intended target! I intend to hit it but things dont always go my way.
in reply to: Painted Kodiak Magnums #12373Thanks very much! i was going to try and hunt it up today when i got home. That is the article i was thinking of.
This reminds me its time to renew my subscription to my favorite publication.
in reply to: How many bows do you have? #10554Im really havin issues right now I am really getting the bug to build a self bow I voe a little trailbike im rebuilding once its complete i think im going to attempt to carve out my first bow after fifty something years of shooting bows somebody else built.
in reply to: Painted Kodiak Magnums #10546Im out working on a jobsite but i belive there was an article in Traditional Bowhunter about refinishing bows that had been painted when i get home ill try to look up the issue and post the year and date maybe you could purchase that back issue for reference.
in reply to: tournament question #10542Under the club i belong to in Calif. Traditional arhcers of calif. They dont allow string walking and longbows must shoot wooden arrows. I dont believe there is and restriction i can remmeber on rests or shooting off the shelf. Ive seen guys using the old bear style plastic arrow rests even on long bows but almost everyone shoots off the shelf and ive seen recurves shoot off rests or the shelf. I prefer to shoot off the shelf with all my bows it just seems natural to me.
I guess it really depends on the sanctioning club or association.I kind of prefer wood out of everything for arrows but do shoot aluminum occasionally out of my recurves.
what ever works i guess.
in reply to: Newbie looking for first longbow #10535you can find some great deals on longbows on Ebay. just be sure not to overbow! you may out grow it resonably soon but it depends it appears the trend is towards lower poundage bows ive spent my whole life as an archer working upwards in draw weight but that only cover aboutt he last 522 years. there are so many great used bows out there you cant go wrong with a little research. Any bow you get interested in will probabaly have a former owner of that model or a member here will know some one who had one and can tell you about them.
so dont be locked into new when you may be able to find a really sweet used bow for even less money.
in reply to: where are the heavier bows at??? #53121Well what ever poundage we shoot were doing it without all the dohickies and BS thats the main appeal to me. I like the simple act of thinking of where i want the arrow to go and when it does its just a great feeling especially when you shoot a nice group at a good distance. I havent hunted much in years not alot to hunt out here but i really enjoy 3d shoots and at the longer distances the higher poundage really helps and then it takes alot of conditioning which is good for me too. If it wasnt for Archery I could never get motivated to hit the weights. shooting my bows is my reward to motivate me to stay in better shape. that just might keep this old carcass breathing and above ground a bit longer.
in reply to: where are the heavier bows at??? #51878Its a bit of work to stay in shape to pull a decent bow but we need to stay in decent shape! compared to Howard Hill and people like john Shculz im a wuss those guys drew some serious bows into their old age. Id like to carry on that kind of tradition and besides its kind of fun seeing the look on someones face when they try to draw your bow! its all about working those muscle groups and staying in decent shape i am constantly working to get back in shape because im an accident prone individual. But its not tolerable to me to compromise! ill shoot a mans bow as long as i can then maybe ill get a compund! i sometimes shoot my kiddie bows i have several 60#ers i use when recovering from injury.my nephew started shooting some time ago i gave him my old first recurve then my brotheers old recurve and three weeks ago i gave him a vinson minor bamboo longbow and dozen wooden arrows! you should have seen his face now all his friends want longbows. hes drawing 60# but hes a tall 16 year old. he has pretty much put his compund away and shoots the long bow exclusivly! I cant wait to take him to some traditional three d shoots like i did his uncle when he was young.
in reply to: where are the heavier bows at??? #32177I use several exercises to build up and shoot well and i have no lower shoulder socket on my right arm I had to lear to shoot right handed then firty year slater i seprated my left shoulder 4th degree sepaeration it shortened my draw by one inch from 29 to 28″. I bench press do curls and whats called a fly. the fly builds up the shoulder blade area which really helps in drawing heavy bows and holding them at full draw. Im 60 and have had spinal damage due to being in car accident hit from behind while stopped several times the socket and shoulder injuries were from crashing motorcycles. it hurts a bit building up but once you get into it it feels great!
But im s sucker for big motors big guns and high poundage bows ex wife says i too macho! im only 5’7″ not a big guy
but no matter wehat you shoot aboove all have fun thats the name of the game.
skifrk wrote: One way to develop those muscles is to try some of the exercises G. Fred Asbell has in his book “Advanced instinctive shooting for bowhunting” or develop a workout program to strengthen the muscles that are used in the back for heavier bows along with their opposite so the ones in the chest, remembering to work all muscles in the back not the ones on the draw side.
in reply to: Bullet casing to suit 5/16 wooden shafts #10817i was interested in how to get the weight up led shot? where do you get that? In calif we cant have led anymore even fishing sinkers arent made of led.
in reply to: Bob Lee bows #9835Be sure the manufacturer says the bow is safe to use with a fast flight string it could effect your warranty and possibly your safety.
