Just watched, and enjoyed, your video very much. Brought a smile to my face and makes me want to head out for a little shooting.

Thinking of making one myself, just don’t think I have scraps as good as yours. 😀 And God knows I’m too frugal (not cheap, frugal) to go out and buy anything.

Grumpy, I was being frugal too with using the scraps I had laying around. That was until I decided to do the saddle stitch to hold the pieces together. I did cheat and used contact cement to join them first, then stitched them up. Problem was I had none of the stitching tools and ended up spending forty bucks at Tandy Leather for an awl, awl blade, needles, and thread. Didn’t work out all that cheap in the end. But I am very pleased with it and like the looks of it.

I’m curious as to why you won’t hunt with this quiver?

Easy answer to that question. I have a Cat Quiver III that I prefer for hunting purposes. Provides good protection for fletching and has an ample size pack for the things I like to carry with me. So, it is more a matter of preference over the side quiver.

My primary bow is a Chekmate Hunter II recurve, 56 lbs @ 28 inches. My backup is my 1970’s Bear Kodiak Magnum 46 lbs @ 28 inches, or if it is not handy my ironwood primitive bow (made it myself) 62 lbs @ 28 inches. Love to shoot my bows!

I have to agree with the others who have said to give the guy a little more time. If he is at the glue up stage, then he is getting close and is taking his end of the deal seriously. If you have a reliable bow that you can use, then go with that. You will be happy with the finished product when it arrives and it is worth the wait to get a custom bow.

Congratulations, that must have been a little nerve racking to track it thru that grass and then come upon it still alive. Great story, a great bear. Way to go.

Congrats, what a trophy to take with a longbow.

Do a search on this form for a thread by “Duncan” with the subject “Copperheads” and you will see some pictures of a very nice side quiver.

With the choices of side, back, bow and the many different styles of quivers within each of these categories it is very much a personal choice that may take a little experimenting.

Grumpy, you are really experimenting with the fibreglass and resin backing. Good to see some innovation going on in bow building. But, I was comparing it to our normal building process where we would use epoxy, as opposed to resin when making a glas bow. From following along this thread it seems your resin is working, but I wondered if you switched to epoxy if it would make any difference.

You might want to pick up some epoxy, soak the glas in it and then apply it to the bow. I suggest this because I have worked with both and found resin much more brittle and less flexible then epoxy. Not sure if it would make a difference but thought I would pass this along.

I have made several ash bows and all failed in some fashion. Crystalled, broke, one limb would simply go weak. Finally switched to ironwood and made a couple real shooters out of it.

                          Arne,

Thanks for that review. I think you nailed it right on. The three things I noticed were 1) my leaning over towards the bow, as if I am chanting my body to match the cant of the bow; 2) I roll my shoulders inwards towards my chest, which shortens my draw length and takes the back muscles out of the draw; 3) I snap shoot and I would prefer a solid anchor and a complete stop at anchor.

After watching the video the first time I tried to stand erect, keep the shoulders straight and concentrate on using back muscles. I found my back muscles aching after a short session so it would seem that I was starting to use them.

I will work on each of the suggestions you made to try to improve knowing that old habits die hard but they can be beat. Thanks again for an excellent review.

I am not sure if this is going to work because it is my first attempt to include a youtube video in a post, but here goes:

                              https://www.youtube.com/my_videos?o=U

Watching yourself on video turns out to be very beneficial. I observed three things that I think are faults with my form. I am not going to tell you yet what they are, so lets see if you see the same things.

It has taken me about three weeks to make the video, convert it, edit it, and get it posted to youtube. My apologies if it is a little long. This stuff is a little challenging for my computer illiterate brain. Thanks for taking a look and offering any constructive criticism.

It really surprises me that they took this position. I would have thought they would have supported it due to lobbying from gun manufacturers. I was watching a show on one of the outdoor channels where one of the “famous” personalities shot an animal at over 400 yards and all I could think was “That is hunting!!!” No it was just shooting.

If you want to shoot long range to prove you are accurate why not just punch paper. Why risk injuring and losing an animal. I guess I just don’t get it.

I’d like to play. Mighty nice of you to create a little contest for fun.

My brother-in-law and I have hunted together for forty years. One year we travelled to a remote cabin we rented for a couple nights. We got settled in and decided on who was sleeping where and I drew a small single bed. He got the double.

He is a notorious snorer and I figured if I could get to sleep before him I would not be awakened by his snoring. So I headed to bed early while he stayed up to watch the hockey game. The living area had one of those futon things that the backrest folds down to make it into a bed. Seems he folded it down to watch the game and lie down to be comfy. Eventually he fell asleep on the thing and never got into the bed.

About 3:00 AM I am awakened by a loud bang. I thought someone fired a gun out behind the cabin. I yelled for him but all I got in answer was his snoring. So, I get up to investigate, go out into the living area to find him asleep on the floor. Turns out he rolled over and the back legs of the futon thing came off the floor. He rolled out of this makeshift bed and the futon slammed back down on the floor. That was the noise that awoke me.

I yelled at him to get up and go to bed and all I got for an answer was snoring. So, I left him on the floor and went back to sleep in my comfy little bed.

Man can that guy sleep and I have bugged him about this story for years.
