It was a great little trip, with some nice campfires on the sand after a hard days paddling. I’m glad the pics turned out ok, never can tell with my little point and shoot camera, especially covered in water in a rocking kayak!

Doc Nock wrote: Beautiful pics, but YIKES! That far to paddle for “unskilled paddlers”… oh, my…

It’s ok Doc, they were all my infantry brethren, tough as nails every one of them 😉

I would take any of you fellas out any day of the week. Although it’d probably be a better fishing trip than hunting trip 😀

Pretty much every morning I’d hear someone exclaim “Jim, do you have to get out of your tent before you put your pants on?”. The answer was obviously ‘yes I do’. If you can’t stand naked on a remote beach and enjoy the ocean breeze, well what’s the point of living? But I’m sure if someone had taken a photo it would’ve been a ‘fail’ in the worst internet sense of the word 😉

Congratulations Alex, and well done on the mental victory as well.

Thanks very much for the kind words everyone. You should all know Mike has been very supportive of me since I mentioned it to him and was in fact so confident he sent me a very generous gift in congratulations… BEFORE I had sat my officer selection board!

Echoing what Don said about self fulfilling prophecies, it wasn’t that long ago people thought the idea of hunting big game with a bow and arrow was a ridiculous proposition. The point was well proven by pioneers in our sport.

So maybe the challenge has been set for some adventurous members of the forum. Prove the point, take a camera and write an article… or at least post a thread 😉

              AND…

At the risk of accusing Mike of prematurely calling time of death, I happen to have a point that might be a little of playing devils advocate, but it feels like the argument has legs, so give it a chance!

So to be clear when we say baiting in this context we mean food baiting. Because baiting in a broader sense is pretty accepted practice, whether that’s the audio baiting of artificial calls or antler rattling, or the visual baiting of turkey and duck decoys. So I kind of feel like there’s something a little disingenuous about decrying food baiting but accepting the others. Obviously this argument takes no account of ecological effects of food baiting, just the ‘in principle’ side of the affair. ‘In principle’ I don’t see a big difference.

Nice one Patrick. I reckon looking after a dog makes a young fella a better man, if he can look after a pup he’s doing very well.

Bruce, I love GSP’s, one of my good army pals had two of them, but they were never hunting dogs. One of them had a hunters heart though. We’d often take our dogs for a 10-15km run through some local woodlands and there was one creek that we’d cross where Toby (the GSP) would invariably see a duck or other bird. We wouldn’t see him again for a while, just hear his “Oh Oh Oh Oh” bark as he’d chase the bird down the creek. I love that bark 😀

Well done on the thorough follow up Preston and thank you for sharing the challenging experience. That’s a pretty good result all things considered. I daresay your one antlered friend will be extra wary from now on… Lessons learned in blood are the hardest to forget 😉

Echoing the sentiments above Preston, perhaps it’s a lesson learned for you and for the buck if he survives. I’ve no doubt you’ll track him long and hard tomorrow and there’s not much more to be done I suppose. There’s no shame in an honest mistake, as long as you take away the lessons learned my friend.

It’s the very same. But I had the bow and arrows inside a big pack liner (think of a light weight dry bag) which was neatly wrapped up like a christmas present and attached to the back of the pack with elastic webbing.

Ralph, if your daybag has a chest strap between the shoulder straps you can basically use your daybag straps as a bino harness. Put your day bag on with chest strap undone, then feed one side of your bino neck strap under your right shoulder strap and back over, pulling the right chest strap through the neck strap.. like this:

Do the same with the other side and then do the chest strap up, it should end up something like this:

The only drama is it’s a little fiddly every time you want to take off and put on your pack.

If I had a proper bino harness I reckon I’d probably just wear that with the day bag over the top, unless your day bag made that uncomfortable for some reason?
