in reply to: Abell's instinctive shooting books – a question #57567
Cheers mike, I’m a dumb repetition learner as well. Plus I can do that form practice in my short backyard range which is convenient when chasing toddlers 🙂
The daily highs are finally starting to drop below the nineties, humidity is falling. Lovely time for some archery! I’ve been nursing a torn calf and ruined knee for a few weeks now, it’ll be nice to have something to do that doesn’t require much walking 😉
in reply to: Kangaroo leather and neat sewing tool #57378Skinner, that’s a neat technique mate. I’ll be giving it a go.
in reply to: Abell's instinctive shooting books – a question #56894I just ordered number 2 and his dvd from 3 rivers. I guess in about 2 weeks I’ll learn about all the ‘wrongs’ I’m doing as well 😉
in reply to: Arrow Question(s)… #55621It is pretty good that book, it should provide most of the guidance I need when I get to work on mine. Two4hooking did a pretty good walk through on his blog as well:

in reply to: BUILDING THE BOW #55574This is a diversion from the thread but I found the most accessible introduction to Ashby’s stuff these videos from a seminar he gave:

I can’t speak for our palaeolithic friends, but from Melanesian hunters to pilum throwing centurians, folks have known weight up front helps a stick fly straight 😉
in reply to: Arrow Question(s)… #55315Alex, I have no advice to offer as I have also only just recently dipped my toe in the wooden arrow pond. But I can tell you that I am hooked. So far I have only bought some completed arrows from a local fletcher, but I have an order of blank shafts coming and I’ll be going through the same learning curve you are now. So I’ll just sit back and poach all the lessons here 😀

in reply to: Aussie turkeys #55299Don, it’s funny that even Fraser Is dumbs down your turkeys as it’s one of the few places I know with a reasonably dense dingo population. I don’t know if it would still be possible to hunt them there as virtually the whole island is a national park now (maybe if the rangers were organizing a cull). I haven’t been there since childhood camping trips, but that piques my interest to return, thanks for the tip 😉
in reply to: Fletching color #55287I’m with J.Wesbrock. Bright or unnatural colours. I find black and white stand out quite well too (it doesn’t snow here). Maybe I’m optically retarded but any green, even fluorescent, disappear in grass for me 🙁
in reply to: BUILDING THE BOW #54624Even if no one was reading mate, it’d still be worth putting up. It’s great when you have a question here, do a keyword search and voila, someone has already answered it. Part of what makes this place a great resource in my little opinion 😉
in reply to: Kangaroo leather and neat sewing tool #54337Holy cow, $6. Grumpy knows where to shop.
in reply to: I just bought my first longbow. #54330Hah, I read and replied to your pm before I read this, so my reply won’t make much sense 😳
Yep, low wrist will definitely be different for me. I can’t wait to give it a good hard try though 🙂
in reply to: I just bought my first longbow. #54165Cheers for the good luck Ralph. I’ve never shot one, but I by the looks of it this bow has one of those heavier, almost recurve like risers. I’m not sure exactly what that will mean for my wrist position, I’ll have to figure that out when it gets here. The only club in this town that is even close to traditional is out of action for the time being so I can’t even go pester anyone. But I’m looking forward to being hooked by the long bow 🙂
in reply to: You've got to be kidding me!!! #54135Any kind of toilet for the outdoors is a thief of one of the wilderness’ greatest pleasures. The squat. There’s nothing like the stretch your back gets, with the wind between your cheeks as you fill a very shallow grave 😉
Of course, I’m never in the kind of cold a lot of you guys are in… And my wife loves the more civilized outdoor water closets..
in reply to: I just bought my first longbow. #54122Cheers guys 🙂
Ralph it’s a one piece. I’m expecting it to arrive next week, I’ll be sure to post some pics. Unless it breaks in transit, in which case I will cry myself to sleep 😉
in reply to: You've got to be kidding me!!! #54084Haha pothunter, I was definitely not thinking about shooting someone with a blank 😯
