Hah, the way I shoot Ralph, the safest place for anything is right where I’m aiming. I’d say behind me is safer but one time I shot a blunt at a target on the ground, it went low, hit a concrete lip, bounced straight back past me and hit my dog, nock end first 😯

I shot at a dog target today from 20m and clean missed, yet I hit my dog with a rebound Byron Ferguson couldn’t replicate. Go figure 😉

Couple days ago I had a shocker, something like 8-9 inch group at 20metres cold. I thought I took a photo but apparently I didn’t. Rest assured they were left, right, up and down, but none were on. There is an old man up here who stacks them up at 20m with a barebow. I’m glad he wasn’t around 😛

Yesterdays effort: 30m, no wind. I don’t do much shooting at 30m and have done virtually none since I’ve thrown myself into ‘instinctive’. The first two (low ones) were proper instinctive but I was so disheartened I did what should never be done in instinctive and made a conscious correction, the leaf on the sign is the target…

This morning was a bit better but still a good reminder of why I only shoot at rabbits that far away. 30m, no wind, center of ‘O’ was target:

          Worked fine for me 😉

Good instructional Clay. The humble tarp is an excellent but oft overlooked tool in the outdoors in my little opinion. I use a very small and lightweight variety we call a ‘hoochie’ down here.

I keep elastic straps tied to the corners for quick and easy set up. They’re great even in the summer as a source of shade. You can also use it to wrap up your field pack with a little air pocket so you can float it across a river and keep the pack and contents dry. Lots of things they can be used for and they pack so small and light!

I can’t wait to see what else you guys come up with 😀

I don’t really get that Mike. When ever I am shooting anything I am always somewhat aware of what is going on in my periphary. That is especially true for things moving within it, which the arrow is right up until anchor. I worked hard at the very start of my career to avoid tunnel vision while shooting, are you saying that is what I should be attempting to achieve in focusing on the target?

Look forward to hearing from you. Sounds like business is good 😀

A cant feels unnatural to me, but I have been working on forcing it lately. When I put a really heavy cant on it (maybe 45degrees, probably less) I appreciate what Asbell is saying about getting the bow out of the way. Even focusing on the target, all I can see in my periphery is the arrow, lining fletching to tip to target.

Asbell writes of pointing your bow hand at the target while Hill wrote of thinking of the arrow as an extension of your string hand and pointing that at the target. When I shoot a rilfe instinctively I point both hands at the target and I have been trying to apply that. The double hand point, with the heavily canted bow leaving nothing but the arrow as a visual reference seems to cover all bases for me. The cant still feels unnatural but I am convinced of it’s merits so will persist for the time being.

I tried a different twist today. I call it ‘the fatigued shot’. I did a run in the morning, busy day at work then an olympic clean session at lunch time, so by the time I got to the range I was buggered.

So I figured if I just shot a group and took a photo, just as the ‘cold shot’ would well replicate conditions of sitting in the cold waiting for a shot, so would these replicate conditions at the end of a long day of stomping around hills with pack, tired and sore, when a shot presents itself.

Range 20m, wind nil. The group was ok for that range, but ahh, i put a star on the pic where I was actually aiming…

My line for the rest of the arvo was ok, but that first group, 😯

Alex, I’ve seen a guy that just used the smallest sized zip ties to fix his silencers to his string. Seemed to work fine and he’d done it so you didn’t see the ties unless you looked really close.

Beautiful work Troy. The pattern on the limbs and belly of the riser make a genuinely stunning effect.

Today’s effort as soon as I got home from work. That’s a pretty substantial miss at 9 yards… Stupid knot. It has a forcefield.
