Jimmy Blackmon did a neat little vid on youtube where he shows his method for plotting the trajectory/ballistics of a given bow/arrow rig. I’ve been playing around with that and arrows seem to have a gentle rise up from the bow to a ‘sweet spot’ where the trajectory is almost flat for a while (mine is about 15-32 yards) before plummeting rapidly.
I reckon that sweet spot is what makes instinctive shooting viable and effective, once I get past it I have to do a reasonable JD and gap to be consistent.
Why does that matter? The heavier and slower an arrow, the shorter that sweet spot is and hence the shorter your effective instinctive range. I think you’d have to be quite a gifted individual to make the instinctive JD’s and elevation adjustments required for the steep drop at the end of flight. I’m certainly not up to the task.

in reply to: What ya got goin? #28430We’re right on the bottom of the salty’s range here. I pucker up a bit every time I wade across a creek (I waded a very dodgy looking estuarine creek about a week ago to get to a delicious looking mango grove on the other bank… I hope the crocs don’t get wise to that!), but they’re not very common here. Tiger sharks are all over the place though and the stinger season has just started (1 metre worth of tentacles on you is enough to kill a healthy adult), and we are paddling a long way north, which puts us deeper into croc country…
Should be fun! I just bought a waterproof camera so hopefully when I get back I can post some pics to help get you through winter 😉

in reply to: What ya got goin? #27968I did a little overnight trip to one of the islands off the coast here a couple days ago and tomorrow we set off on a 10 day expedition, island hopping up the coast. The best part is I’m getting paid for it 😉
Alas we’re bouncing from Nat. Park to Nat. Park so I can’t bring my hunting gear. Can’t win em all!

Mike, we do have and use Kleppers but this isn’t a tactical course. We have a wing in the army called Adventurous Training Wing. So this course will qualify me as an adventurous training leader and allow me to take out completely inexperienced seakayakers and give them ‘adventurous training’ in sea kayaks. We use a range of civilian plastic and fibreglass kayaks.
I am LOVING it 😀
in reply to: Backcountry College #4 – navigation 1 #22280That’s not an easy topic to cover in a video mate, you’ve done well.

Don’t take it as an advertisement for Vibram either, same things apply for whatever you get 😉
And stick to the program on the 3rd link. I’ve seen a few guys push too fast and tear calves or get inflamed cartiledge in their feet. If you’re going to build a house you want to invest some time in a strong foundation.

in reply to: What ya got goin? #15828I was thinking of packing my Sage Ralph. Put a little reel on it. Also I think we’ll be island hopping through some pig and goat infested islands 😉
in reply to: What ya got goin? #15749I managed to get myself on a 4 week army sea kayaking course starting next week! Not exactly hunting related but I’m keen to get canoeing and figure this is better than nothing 😉

True, but evolution has carved out a very poorly designed joint to do what we ask it to do.
I’ve never seen a nature documentary where a cheetah is chasing a gazelle and a loud pop is heard followed by a screaming cat nursing the torn ligaments in his ankle, but it happens on football fields every weekend 😉
I do love the look and idea of moc’s though, so I’m eager to hear how you go 😀
I was talking to a fella here who hunts pigs with his pig dogs and started telling him about some of Don’s articles I’ve read about using hounds to hunt lions and the basic process as I understand it, which involves the lion running away from the dogs and eventually treeing.
A Zimbabwean chap who was listening in on the conversation chimed in and in his wonderfully thick accent said “That sounds very strange, a lion running from hounds.”
To which the gravelly voiced pig hunter replies “It’s not bloody Mufasa mate, it’s a mountain lion!”
I laughed so hard I nearly burst and I’m laughing now writing it, but fear it is “you had to be there” kind of comedy 😀
in reply to: Predator Recurve? #12539That’s encouraging to know gents. I just found out it is of the 60″ variety however and I read on 3rivers Q&A that the 62″ is recommended for draws over 28″. Any of you have experience shooting the 60″ limbs with a slightly longer draw length? I think it’s just a question of finger pinch isn’t it? I haven’t read anywhere that the draw force curve changes dramatically.
