in reply to: Night Practice! #39058
Its funny, I tried practicing in the last half hour of fading light to prep for bear season. My arrows were all over the place. Shoot fine in the daylight though. Don’t know why, I did everything just the same as always but my arrows would not go where I wanted them to. Same shot in daylight and I shot about a 4 inch group at 20 yds every time.
in reply to: String Leeches Vs. Beaver Balls #39046I’ve used cat whiskers alot and always had a quiet bow. One of the simplest and best silencers I ever used was showed to me by an old-timer. It was a 1/4 inch slice of a bicycle tire tube. Like a wide rubber band. He looped it through itself on the string an cinched it tight.
The biggest thing, no matter what you use, is where to tie it. I think there is a thread on here that mentions something called Heterodyning. Basically, think of the vibration of the string and now break it into different sized segments to cancel each other out. Measure the string and divide by 4. tie one silencer at this measurement from the tip of the top limb. Now divide the total string length by 3. tie the other silencer at this measurement from the tip of the bottom limb. You basically create 2 different vibration frequencies that effectively cancel each other.
Sorry for the long winded reply, hope it helps
in reply to: Hair-raising bear video #30636By the way this bear keeps looking back, I’d say another bear is in the area and spooked this one up the tree. It really makes your hair stand up when you’re in a ground blind and you suddenly hear one sniffing the outside of the blind !!

in reply to: I have declared war on the squirrels! #29379when I was a boy, my Mom would make meat pies with squirrel and pigeon breast. We’d go out in the woods and whack a few tree rats and then stop by the farm down the road. They always had pigeons around their silo. One of us would flush them with rocks and the other would shotgun them. I sure do miss those pies !!
in reply to: I have declared war on the squirrels! #27319I feel the same way about those filthy tree rats, and as fun as it is to try thumping them with arrows…. I find the .410 shotgun works MUCH better !! I still try a couple arrows at them now and then but when the population gets to the “no more fooling around” point and the gun comes out.
in reply to: Different arrows for each draw weight? #23705Here’s my 2 cents, I shoot a 40#@28″ recurve and draw 30.5 inches. Real draw weight around 46/47#. I shoot Carbon Maxx 3000 arrows with 145 grains up front. They fly great and work well for me. Oddly enough, I also have an older compound that draws around 57/58# and I shoot they same arrow from both. By stepping down to 100 grain points, the arrow reacts stiffer for the compound @57# and softer for the recurve with 145 grain points. Same arrow ,different point weights.
You might also try leaving your arrows a bit long for the lower draw weight and trim them back as you gain draw weight as the longer arrow will react softer and as you shorten it, it will react stiffer.
Good luck, hope it helps !!
in reply to: Turkey Hunting to Bear Scouting #56955Of course, it helps that I married into a family of bear hunting outfitters !!
in reply to: Turkey Hunting to Bear Scouting #56948We lost our spring hunt about 15 years ago and the population has exploded since. I used to hunt whitetails every year but I actually prefer bear meat to all others so I started bear hunting every fall to fill the freezer and help keep the numbers down.
in reply to: Turkey Hunting to Bear Scouting #52370Ok, I can respect your opinion on this and the way you choose to hunt. Best of luck to you. And Tailfeather, it does sound like fun !
in reply to: Too much fun #49246YES ! THEY DO !!
On another note, what is that quiver made of ? It almost looks like a spotted fawn !
in reply to: Turkey Hunting to Bear Scouting #49232Just a thought, but I’ve always dreamed of doing a coastal black bear hunt. I’ve hunted bears over bait for years and where I live, it really is the only practical way to hunt them. The thought of stalking bears in the tidal flats and salmon streams sends me daydreaming !! However,(and here comes the previously mentioned thought) this hunt would consist of scouting food sources along shore and estuaries in hopes of finding a decent bear to stalk and hopefully harvest. Much like scouting and hunting over an acorn heavy grove of white oak. once again, just a thought but if the bears are coming to eat then isn’t it all hunting over bait !?!?
in reply to: sloppy release…help me… #28129Theres an app for that !! Its called ubersense. It allows you to record video of yourself and play it back in slow motion to analyse your form. you can also do an overlay of your video with another video to show errors in for or technique.
in reply to: 5th Annual Dwight Archery Tournament #28124Sorry, my cut and paste skills are lacking ! Yes, May 5th at Logging Chain Lodge in Dwight Ontario Canada. Not sure what the other dates are, they were there when I copied this. Probably not too many folks here able to attend (or even know where Dwight is) but I thought I would post it anyway. You never know !!
in reply to: How far will you shoot? #20337I tend to be like Wahoo, I’ve shot small game at distances farther than I thought without hesitation but passed other shots that ended up closer than i thought because I just didn’t feel comfortable or confident with it. It depends on the situation and there are soooooo many variables leading up to the moment when your brain says “let it fly” or “let down”. I like to stay around the 20 yard rule but in reality, I don’t worry so much about “yardage”. If it feels right I shoot and if it doesn’t, I pass. I guess the key is knowing your bow and what you can or can’t achieve with it!
