in reply to: Shoots in Ontario this may #54938
We have an annual 3D shoot in Dwight. Its usually the 1st Sunday of May. Not “trad” specific, all archers welcome, but I go every year and its a great day with great people, a challenging course and quite a spread for lunch !! Well worth the $25 entry !!
I also know of a club called The Flying Feathers that have one on Mothers Day Weekend and if you just want to shoot, you might want to check out the Kawartha Traditional Archery Center. They have a pretty awesome facility and it is all trad !!
in reply to: Cold Weather Gloves #31483cold shooting hand, I wear insulated bib overalls in cold weather. I simply keep my hand inside the bib when it gets cold.
Cold feet !?! I am cursed with feet that WILL NOT stay warm !!
I mean even at around the freezing mark, my feet are frozen. The only thing I’ve ever owned that kept them warm was a good pair of mukluks. One thing that has changed the game is the Thermacell heated insole !! As a builder in Muskoka, I’m outside like every day year round !! These things are worth every cent !!
in reply to: Garbaging for Bears #15739I’ve hunted the “bear woods” my whole life. Not always for bear, but hunted none the less. In those 30’ish years, i can only remember actually spotting a bear, in the woods, no bait, just stalking the woods….3 times !! Let me also add that I go hiking or stumping quite regularly(once or twice a week year round) and the 3 times in 30 years still stands !
The bears are here, in fact, their numbers have increased dramatically since the cancellation of the spring hunt some 15 years ago. I’m not going to begin to compare the different habitats from different regions but up here…. spot and stalk is just not a viable option for hunting bears !! In fact I challenge someone to come try it !!!!
I fully understand those who are against baiting…I don’t agree with them but I understand them. I just don’t think they fully understand what it would “truly” mean to ban it !
in reply to: Where is your anchor? #15705No worries Grumpy !! This longer draw shooter won’t take offense , but then….I don’t exactly have calloused knuckles from dragging on the ground either !! Its all good, just means my bows are all a few pounds heavier than they’re marked !!
I use the same anchor though, thumb knuckle(closest to the hand) just under my ear lobe in the back of my jaw and also, I touch the tail of the cock feather to the tip of my nose. A second reference point or double anchor that I learned from Rick Welch.
This has served me very well and it really feels “locked in” when I reach anchor.
in reply to: Quiet this recurve…. #50989Have you tried the heterodyning placement method ?
I think there is a thread about it on here somewhere.
After trying it, I now do all my string silencers this way.
in reply to: Garbaging for Bears #50979I live and hunt in North Central Ontario.
I’ve hunted my whole life in many areas of this province and I can say, without a doubt, hunting bears here without bait is like fishing without a hook !!
The notion of spot and stalk requires the ability to actually see more than 50 feet in any direction ( hence spot ) and much of the bush here is too thick for that !!
Not going to say it “can’t be done”, but to take away baiting would be to take away bear hunting here !
in reply to: Arrows and Snow #50971I hunt rabbit and hare all winter long with my recurve.
Very seldom lose an arrow thanks to my bottle cap bunny busters !! I drill a small hole in a bottle cap and screw my field tip through it. I also put a small washer behind the bottle cap. This combo works great for small game and when you miss ( and we all miss from time to time ) they don’t disappear under the snow. I actually take practice shots at leaves in the snow when the action is slow. Like I said, very seldom do I lose an arrow with this head !
in reply to: Would you shoot a bedded animal? #50965Would and have a few times !
Not to make excuses or anything but I’m a meat hunter for one and we just don’t have the deer density to pass on ANY opportunity. If I have a clean shot and a tag for it, I’ll take it !!
in reply to: Spring Bear #63483Thanks for sharing this awesome story with us !!
Not only exciting, but just goes to show that with the proper arrow set up, even a lighter weight bow can be very lethal !!
in reply to: Paint instead of wraps? #31674I’ve done 4 fletch on my Blitzenberger jig.
You can do 105/75 or 90 degrees on it. You can also use the 120 degree setting by doing 2 feathers and then take the arrow out and rotate it 180 and do the other 2.
I prefer the 105/75 orientation !!
in reply to: String grove silencer #27322I second the Velcro comment. Didn’t put much stock in it until I tried it and it did make a difference
in reply to: Bowfishing string ?? #25629Thanks for all the info everyone !!
in reply to: Converting Browning compound to recurve #19532I have an old Hoyt Rambo from the 80’s that still shoots great !! As for the conversion, do a search for Warf Bows !! There are a number of older compounds that make good trad conversions. I’m told the old Bear Whitetail is one of the best bows to “Warf” !!
in reply to: Side quivers with arrow grippers #19524I’m not so good with the posting pics and such so I’ll try to explain how I made it.
First, I found a suitable “hood” shaped container.something that will hold 4 or 5 arrows without crowding them too much. We buy a Greek yogurt that comes in a container that is a round cup with a flat side on it. Perfect for what I was looking for !!
Then, I cut a slat of wood about 3″ wide, 18″long and 1/4″thick,
and glued the yogurt cup to the bottom of the slat.
I cut up an old leather bag (thrift store) which had snaps on the ends. I then laid the “cup on a stick” on the leather and traced out the shape needed to wrap the whole thing with it. I made sure the cut incorperated the snap button and band on the edge of the cup.(kinda got lucky there) Super 77 spray adhesive and a careful slow hand and the whole thing was clad in leather.
For the gripper, I cut an old flip flop in a shallow “D” shape, cut a slot in it so it would slide down onto the top of the now “leather clad cup on a stick”
I drilled five holes (could have been 6 or 4 or what ever you want) evenly spaced along the round edge with a 3/8 drill bit and cut a tapered slot into each hole with a box cutter knife.
I used a piece of the handle strap for a belt loop. About 6 inches folded in half and fastened to the top edge of the slat about 2’3 from the bottom so that it hangs at the preferred angle. This loop also works well with a shoulder strap and I now primarily carry it that way !!
THATS IT !!
Hope this works for you !!
in reply to: Paint instead of wraps? #19501I’ve tried spray paint caps and had problems with the glue. They worked, but not the best !! I even tried an automotive clear lacquer over the paint. Better, but still had some glue issues !!
