Severed the tail of a coyote. Wow, there is inspiration for another poem! Dogs hold their tails in the highest regard, imagine what that coyote is thinking. 😆

Thanks for reminding me of an early miss from a treestand, and of all the thoughts that I had when starting out bowhunting. I was undone by a small branch 8 ft up, between me and a buck in ’77. I was so sure that I hit him, as I heard the crack of the arrow, but could not find it, nor blood, nor hair; until I looked up. Talk about twisting up your guts. That would have been my first traditional kill. Instead, it was my first miss. Those little trees can be as tough as a rib bone. Really sound like them too.:?

I think if you hunt bear, you go loaded for bear. Guys who hunt such creatures and worse, need every edge that they can get. So, in the far away bush, equipment must perform. If you are home shooting whitetails, and that’s your game, the rules are way different. And thus the prices can be different too. Broadheads are never the place to skimp. Buy the best, as it is where the rubber meets the road, so to speak.

And don’t feel bad about what you spend on your trad gear, whatever that may be, as the compound guys spend a lot more for shooting junk. Way too many critical components. Just a thought.

+1 Boy, that’s it in a nutshell. I also don’t agree with the “light is right” crowd. One pin shooting, we don’t need to practice as much, thus it must be better, etc, etc. They sure kill a lot of paper, wound a lot of everything else. JMHO

Good 1,000th Dave – Good that you got to it before hunting season arrived.:)

We have a local business that makes smokehouses. Within the walls of the smokehouses, they spray expandable foam. Prior to spraying a smoke house, they spray some of the foam into a garbage bag to test the foam mixture. Wha-la, free, cheap broadhead target. I would suppose one could do the same thing with a couple cans of that foam you use to seal cracks and such. A kitchen garbage bag would get you a barrel shape similar to a deer torso. They only last about a year or so depending upon how much you shoot broadheads. But nothing really stands up to shooting broadheads anyway, besides dirt or sand.

Good shooting! Love to hear it! Very funny!

Years ago, at a Deer Show in Madison, I was waiting to shoot a longbow in a try out area. Some kids were watching people shoot. The fellow in front of me was attempting to shoot a pimped out compound with the latest sight gizmo, and they were having problems with it. They could hardly hit paper at 10 yards. So they stepped aside to do more adjusting. So I step up with three arrows, and shoot a group similar to yours. Those kids hadn’t seen too many wood bow shooters, and were oooing the shots. After I retrieved my arrows, I walked by them and asked them if they needed gizmos to throw a baseball accurately. They said no, then I said well you don’t need gizmos to shoot a bow accurately either. Just practice. I don’t think that the gizmo seller liked me much. 😉

All kidding aside, that is a very nice groundhog, and a great shot. I think the idea of using the hide in a quiver cover is a good one, especially one that big. Congrats!

That’s a nice groundhog for PA. Saaayy, that looks a lot like that groundhog they call ‘Phil’. Ooohhh Noooo!! 😯

Yep. looks just like him! Never did like his shadow; guess thats why he was found hanging out in trees. 😉

I thought that I would add a recent photo from the marsh cam. Just like peeking through a window into their world. Looks kind of like she’s peeking back, no?

Don’t forget about New Hampshire’s Mt. Washington. That certainly qualifies as a mountain. Really made my brakes smoke on the way down. 😮

Whooaa! 75 feet no less? I hope those things don’t nest together. I would hate to disturb a whole nest of those things.

I think retiring in the northern US would be fine by me. Never did like the spiders, centipedes, snakes, and scorpions that Dad had to deal with in AZ. I’ll just put another log on the fire and watch it snow up here.

Choose your tips wisely. I have buried judos into soft tree bark even with flu flu arrows. Not so good at climbing trees as I used to be. 🙁

Good luck with squirrels. Crock pot material, with cream of mushroom soup, bay leaves, dumplings, mmmmmm . . .

Actually, I live about 100 miles NE of Dubuque, yet during the same time period as their heavy rains, we received very little. That is what makes this years weather so extreme. Somebody gets swamped, while another nothing but wind and dust. This has been going on all summer.

Dave, glad to hear you finally received some rain. Sounds like you have stumbled upon a good system. I wouldn’t try that in the fall however, instead of lots of rain you might get lots of snow. 😮
