in reply to: What's in a Name? #16049
I work for a cannery in WI. This keeps me very busy from June through September.
in reply to: Good for Illinois ?? #14939I don’t like ‘canned hunts’. Never will, but I vote with my $$$. Most other people do too in WI. That’s why there are so few of those operations in existence. And I like HSUS even less. So I guess to me, it’s the lesser of two evils. If they wouldn’t call it ‘hunting’, would we care as long as the animal is put down cleanly?
Ha – Right now my wife is in Ireland with one of her lifelong friends. (They are shopping for Lace, pottery, crystal, wool, beer & good food – not necessarily in that order.) Perhaps they’ll run into those two guys. 🙂 I think I’ll have a Guinness tonight in their honor, and throw another log on the fire. 🙂 (That’s what old guys do in the states.)
in reply to: long shots #47455Good post Dave, thanks for sharing. I am happy to see the gun side of hunting standing up to protest the same problem that we have in common. I am getting a little discouraged by the mentality of what constitutes an ethical shot. 🙁 The distances are getting stretched by technology, but in reality, still limited by the quarry as noted. Live hunting doesn’t involve paper or foam. People just don’t get it.
in reply to: Brace Height Reference List Anywhere? #47434Thanks guys. I like the 1/8″ rule. Stuff like that is easy to remember.
in reply to: A comment on crossbows #44027So what will those states that allow them say when crossguns become self cocking and multi bolt repeating?
OPPS??? 🙄
in reply to: A comment on crossbows #42271Good for you Prairie, and good luck.
Crossguns are back into the news in WI. They had a meeting earlier in January, and the crossgun advocates came out in force, including support from the NRA. Yes, that NRA. The Wisconsin Bowhunters are even caving in on the crossbow issue at the meeting. The Wisconsin Traditional Archers spoke against. There will be a gun season, then an everything else season. It is just sickening how much pull the crossguns seem to have with some legislators. The main problem is hunter numbers are falling(Selling the crossgun will recruit more hunters argument -kids & women), the deer population in WI is high, and the WI DNR thinks a dead deer is a dead deer, and they don’t care how it happens. Look for WI to fall into the crossbow is legal for all group soon. The ONLY way to really stop them is for the larger non-hunter group of voters to protest or the gun hunters lobby. The NRA isn’t helping in that regard. Evidently, if it has a trigger, it’s A-ok with the NRA.
in reply to: What if …? #41726Unfortunately it is in preparation for shooting at live animals. In their minds, they are being ethical for practicing for this type of shot, but miss the part about it being just stationary foam. They haven’t had the type of shot that R2 speaks of, but odds are that they will in my opinion. They are buying into the hype of TV shows. Sure they want to take a buck at close range, just like everyone does. But they also won’t pass one at long range either. I guess they think there are extra ‘points’ given for long range shots. As I said before, it’s a feather that they want to place in their cap.

Yep, that’s pretty much the entire tech ‘bowhunter’ problem in a nutshell. I was only identifying one problem that I see repeatedly that really rubs me the wrong way. The quest for a 50+ yd kill as a high priority. My thoughts are that animals can move too much at such yardage no matter what you are shooting.
in reply to: What if …? #38666In the little bow club that I belong to, the trend is to attempt long shots at animals. To most newer shooters, this is what they see as THE WAY to put the proverbial feather in ones hat. These younger members are requesting that we set up longer range targets. (We have them up to 40 yards now.) 😕
One can argue specifics on individuals, but the trends in ‘bowhunting’ are undeniable.
in reply to: What if …? #36182Geez, not a canned food – fresh debate??
Don’t lump all processed foods together when talking about nutrition, safety.
The ingredients of our canned peas are pretty simple, i.e. Peas, Water, Salt. Shelf stable for three years, promise not to send you to the porcelain gods if you store, heat, and serve it correctly. With that, you can be rolling the dice with ‘fresh’ foods. Those bacterium are wee little fellows, and they have a tendency to travel in groups on fresh foods. They all have it, just depends on how ‘fresh’ it is when you get it, how you store it, how you prepare it. Slip up anywhere in that chain before consumption, and things can get ugly.
Remember to leave the vegetables out of the conversations on problems with processed foods. They are generally not the root of the problems so stated. You are actually much better off eating your vegetables from a can. Just saying . . .
R2 – I like Sweet Baby Rays BBQ sauce out of Chicago. . . OOOOhhh that’s realllyyy good. Whole pork tenderloin cut in chunks, smoked on the grill with hickory, then boiled down while simmering in a large roaster, pulled apart just prior to the application of the sauce. Large party food. Very little has ever made it back into the fridge, cause rarely are there leftovers.
in reply to: Please speak up for Public land access… #35412Is there a requirement to be a Montana resident, or can others sign? I wouldn’t want to create an invalid signature. Thanks for posting this.
in reply to: What if …? #35380Here is a pic of the Mastadon housed at the Ft Robinson State Park facility in NE. Took this while on a PBS bowhunt this fall. Look at the ribs on this baby. A caveman who brought one of these down was a ‘big man on campus’, because to me it looked like the most likely way of mortally wounding this with a spear was from underneath. Tough and dangerous work.
(Hope this doesn’t copy too tiny. Sized as big as I thought possible)
in reply to: Kalamazoo? #35331Was a good show, and just barely escaped the clutches of another longbow. Whew, it was a close one! I did buy an arm guard, and almost immediately got a call from my wife. I told her I was JUST STANDING next to the Dwyer bow rack, I didn’t even pick one up, much less buy one. But she could tell that I opened my wallet. Now that’s womans intuition! 😯 The Dwyers thought it was pretty funny.
I did get to talk wool with Mr. Norris, and about groundhog thread in the past on here with Mr. Peterson. Nice to converse with you both!
Escaped the freezing rain threat by leaving early on Sunday, got home just in time before it hit WI. Looking forward to going again next year.
Just returned from a bow hunt in Nebraska a couple of weeks ago. Someone brought a heated shower system to use in camp, and was that thing every neat! Everyone was going to browse the catalogs when they returned home for one of those.
As far as your hunt, keep at it. I am in southern WI and the deer have slowed some, but I think mostly due to the weather. It had been warm & very windy. The coming cold snap with a decrease in wind speed should get things rolling again. Good Luck
