in reply to: What do you like best about Bowhunting? #31970
It is tough to say what I like best. I dont believe that any one aspect stands out more than any other after all its all things combined that make it a hunt. I will say that hunting is the time of year that I feel truly free, treading the ground of our ancestors locked in a battle of wits with a full time professional at surviving.
I love the description of the T-REX in jurassic park “He doesn’t want to be fed, he wants to hunt.”in reply to: 4 wheelers, Dave Peterson #19823I have refrained from commenting on this subject for fear my language would not be appropriate.
Centuar I feel for you as one of the good guys defending yourself for the acts of others.(following comments are not directed twards lawful and respectful atv users.)
I have not heard an honest to goodness elk bugle in this area in probably 5 years. The roads and trails are plagued with exhaust belching rubber legged quadrapeds that are even too lazy to shut off the motor before attempting a bugle or cow calling. Elk here have become almost silent. For example last year sitting in wait on a well used game trail two cows with calves passed by me at 10 yards, as they moved down wind of my position they immediately reversed coarse and returned the same way they had come. No alarm bark just a silent communication.
I want to hear some elk vocalization!!!! it just isnt elk hunting without it.Rogue
in reply to: Vanilla Extract Anyone? #17602I also have friends that swear by it, for me walking around bear country smelling like an icecream cone is more than I can take.

in reply to: The Running Woodsman #58263Clay if you find one of those dumb elk would you send me some DNA to transplant here? Wouldn’t hurt if they were deaf and blind also.:P
I noticed on a recent pronghorn hunt as I watched a coyote at 12 yards drinking from a waterhole, that they are always vigilant and aware of their surroundings. Made me feel pretty inferior as a predator. And a Golden Eagle at 4 feet is a giant among predatory birds, awe inspiring would be an understatement.

in reply to: Your Maximum Yardage #27019I will second Don’s answer “It depends”. Personally I lose focus shooting at targets, yet while stump shooting I will at times suprise myself with great shots. Yardage is not a magic number for me I have to be able to come to full draw and feel the shot. If it doesn’t feel right I will let down. All that being said the majority of my shots are probably under 20 yards.
