Mine is my nickname from work – I’m a wellsite geologist, and look at drill cuttings (rocks) for a living.

Good luck guys! I went for a horseback ride in my favorite spot on Saturday, lots of rubs and scrapes, and ran across about 30 whitetails, 6 bucks, two of them pretty nice. So they are starting up here as well. Don’t have my bow yet, but I will be hunting anyways later this week…

Some good points, guys, and I respect your opinions. I am one of those that occasionally hunts animals not destined for the table. As a former trapper, I have killed many furbearers for their hides. I still will shoot coyotes and wolves. Not every coyote, but every wolf if I have the chance. The reason being is that the wolf population in my area is robust, and due to a number of factors, wolves being one of them, the ungulate populations are dwindling in areas I hunt. I make a few bucks from the hide, and help out the prey populations. I will not frown on those who don’t though, and expect not to be frowned upon for doing so.

I grew up on the farm and coyote control was a part of life, as they like newborn calves. My dad still shoots every one he can, but they still get the odd calf.

Cool story Steve, I enjoyed it, and glad you took a pass. That was a good experience.

Very touching post. I’m sure your dad was smiling down on that hunt. Great bow, great pics. Congratulations and thanks for sharing that.

Very nice! Great looking bows, and beautiful quiver. That’s some good work you do there.

Sounds good Doc, thanks for the advice. I’ll talk to Ed (called him but he’s hunting til Nov 2) and see what he can set me up with.

Ray – I’m looking forward to getting the bow out this winter, any successes I have I’ll be sure to post pics.

Thanks David, yes they’re expensive, but they seem like they would last a guy a long time as long as you don’t lose them (ouch!). I have been reading the Doc’s stuff there’s some great info in it.

One thing I was wondering is tuning my bow and shafts with a 315gr head, doesn’s seem to leave a lot of room to fiddle qround with weight wise up front. Might be easier to get some heads in the 150-200gr range and a bunch of adapters of different weights to juggle if need be?

Good luck in your quest, it sounds like you are well prepared and I wish you the best, look forward to the results.

I always thought if I went to Africa I’d like to take an elephant. I don’t think I will ever be able to afford an elephant hunt, but may go some day for plains game. I worked with a fellow last spring that went for and was successful taking an elephant (rifle), he said it was the best hunt he’s ever been on.

Howdy from another Mark, I’m new to the site as well and new to traditional archery. There’s some great information on here, a little overwhelming at times, but I’ve enjoyed reading some great posts here. Take care, Rocks (Mark).

Being new to traditional bowhunting I will be following this thread with great interest. I have a bow ordered and will get it in my hands in about a month. The first thing I’m going to want to do is get it tuned and get some arrows set up, so I can work on my shooting.

I’ll be starting right from scratch, I think I want to use carbon arrows, and I’m researching broadhead right now.
