in reply to: The Late Season Hunter #26659
very nice, I like it!
My late season hunts are always among my most favorite hunts.
in reply to: Bare Shaft Tuning – Glue? #26254Thanks guys.
For my 53# bow I have a set of grizzlystiks coming, they are tapered I believe.
For my 40# bow I will pick out some carbons probably paralell, I like the idea of cutting the nock end.
Appreciate the advice, I’m looking forward to building some hunting arrows!
in reply to: Bare Shaft Tuning – Glue? #25780Thanks Patrick, I will round some up.
in reply to: yes I AM a deer hunter ! #24792Congratulations on your first deer, and hope you are posting a thread on one taken with a trad bow in the future!
in reply to: WHATS EVERYONE SHOOTING? #20224Two longbows for me, I draw 29 1/4″:
Martin Venom 66″ 40@28
Toelke T/D Whip 62″ 53@28 (arriving soon)in reply to: Ashby on New Guinea bowhunting, just posted #20146Get well soon Doc!
in reply to: Well I went and did it… #20139Thanks for the comments and advice all. I shot for a couple hours today. Just had fun with it, shooting at different ranges between 18-30 yards. Shot some pretty decent groups and everything felt good :D.
I did check my brace height after I finished, I had lost 3/8″, so gave her a few twists and got it back up to what I started at.
Looking at making up some hunting arrows for this bow, the only decent broadheads I can find near here are 160 gr Zwickey Eskimos, might try them out, may as well practice with broadheads. Anyone ever use them?
How cool is that your wife is singing the anthems at the game Patrick… nice!! I’ll definitely check out that book. I have a copy of the DVD Masters of the Barebow Vol 2, just started watching it.
Thanks again for the advice fellas!

Get close to the target and draw to anchor, hold two seconds and let down.
When you are holding relax and make a figure eight on the target.
Train your mind that you can draw, hold, and let down without shooting.
You do not have to shoot!
Stay with this for a couple weeks and only let the shot go every third or forth time.
Use this time to work on your form.
Do not shoot past seven yards for a couple weeks.:)
Fear of missing? I don’t know but, It creeps in on you.Just wondering about the figure eight… why? which way.. down over and up or up over etc, never heard of this before…
in reply to: ABS Maasai single bevel broadhead give away Winner #8974As a new to trad bow guy, for sure, put me in. Great thing you’re doing, kudos!
I don’t have a lot of experience with a lot of different packs, but have used an older aluminum packframe, and a few years ago bought an Eberlestock J107. It has been very good, I’ve carried some heavy loads on it and it’s always been comfortable, it will last me for many more years. I’m sure there’s better, I hear good things about other packs, Mystery Ranch is the most recommended one I hear about.
Great picture David, love it!
in reply to: Public, Private or both? #7767I’m lucky, I live surrounded by public land, and next to a wilderness park that allows hunting with no motorized traffic allowed (Willmore Wilderness Park). So I hunt public land alost exclusively, with rare occasions on private land when I’m away from home.
in reply to: Hunting camp set-ups #7757I used to use a wall tent, but have been trying to cut down on bulk and weight the last few years. Now we typically bring a small personal tent each, and a tarp to build a lean to as a cooking/sitting/dry out area with a fire in front of it.
I was on a pack trip earlier this fall (lots of horses and lots of gear) and we had a 16X16 pyramid tent with 6′ walls, it was nice, no heavier than my 12X14 wall tent, and way easier to set up. A few of the folks had “tipitents” with fold up woodstoves that they used in them, they all seemed to like them. Here’s the tipitents in front of the pyramid tent we used for the main cooktent:
Here’s my camp last week:
