Hang in there Steve, there are better days ahead for you.
All my best to you and yours, take care.
in reply to: good old mushroom #13694I ended up picking about 3 lbs or so this spring, I think we’re close to the end of morel season here now. Here’s a couple of them fresh, and then cooked:

in reply to: New Ashby update just posted; health issues #40750Some great info in the update. Get well soon Doc!
in reply to: Most Admired Predators #40738I’ll go with the Pine Marten, that medium size member of the weasel family. As a former trapper, I’ve caught hundreds of them and at the same time always admired the tenacious little things.
in reply to: 1st bow to heavy. help!!!!!!!! #16720Great advice from T Downing but I’ll second what J Wesbrock said. I bought my first longbow, a mid 50 pounder to hunt with last winter, I could tell it was a little much for me at the time so I went and bought a cheap 40 pounder and used it almost exclusively for a few months with some short sessions with the heavier bow. I am now shooting the heavier bow with some confidence, it seems like I just needed to train those “bow” muscles.

I’m Mark, from Alberta, Canada. I’m new to trad archery but have been hunting all my life. Actually I’ve come full circle, I had a fiberglass longbow as a teenager that I killed hundreds of gophers with.
I’m 47, married, with two daughters 18 and 9, I got the 9 year old a longbow the same time I got mine and she finally figured it out this week and she was shooting awesome today.
I’m a wellsite geologist, I look at drill cuttings (rocks – thats where my name comes from) for a living for the last 22 years. I live in one of the most beautiful places on this earth, a hunting paradise, and believe that every day is a great day.
in reply to: My Java Man Elkheart: The Four Year Wait Is Over #10816Looking forward to the pics and congratulations!
in reply to: Bow Season vs. Crossbows #10811You guys are right about the compounds, there isn’t a whole lot of difference in performance between them and the crossbow, just a few mechanical differences. And from personal experience a different kind of hunter who wants to use one.
We’ll fight this one, but I think I can see the writing on the wall, and it is going to happen. There have been rumblings for 4 or 5 years, but it is actually a proposed change now, so I think it may make it in. Lots of pressure from manufacturers, for sure.
in reply to: good old mushroom #8836Ok these are just off the top of my head but here’s a couple for morels:
1. Sliced crossways and fried in butter, served on toast.
2. If you have a well seasoned pie iron – get it warm, melt some butter in it, add morels and a good dash of Grand Marnier, and cook til sizzlin.
3. Rinse morels and slice lengthwise, dip in an egg and milk mixture, dip in crushed ritz crackers with a bit or parmesan chesse mixed in, deep fry or fry in a cast pan flipping once with oil and butter til cooked golden brown.
in reply to: Multitool Suggestions #7726I’ve worn a leatherman nearly every day for the last 10 or 15 years. A Wave for the last 2 or 3. It’s a good tool, the only complaint I have is it has a nasty pinch point if you are using the pliers and your hand is up near the front of the handles and it slips, so be careful!
in reply to: Group sizes? #56324Great advice, and a great thread, thanks everyone for their insights. I will be moving on to the next step soon – bear hunting season opens in 9 days! Time to put the practice to the test!
in reply to: Ode to a Mountain Trail #45400Well done, I enjoyed that!
