Ditto on the Alpha Burlys, I have the 1000grm thinsulate one, I have them one size bigger than I wear (10D) I got a size 11 I wear a sock liner wicking type with Merino wool sock, with this combo my feet never get cold, with all my other boots they do!

Best Scent killer is “down wind’ from any animal especially deer!

I hunt public land but there are few gun hunters in my area in fact I havn’t seen any since the first weekend! but I understand the not pushing the deer to other areas! Gun hunting up here will be over by weekend then its back to just bowhunting and no blaze orange! weather is looking good with a little warmup!

The nice thing about Trad bow hunting is that I learn something new about deer with every encounter I have with them! Where I hunt is kind of thick so the deer have be real close or right in my shooting lanes! so lot of times I have deer around me and never get a shot opportunity, I hunt from natural ground blinds, but I study their actions, how they react to noise, the wind, movement and how they all interact especially the doe groups! By doing this I learned to be more relaxed with deer around me now, and every year I become a better hunter! Just having the shot opportunities you got I would say you have been successful already! Even if everything is right does not mean you will connect, lots of variables at work, if was easy there wouldn’t be a need for compound bows, crossbows and firearms, every one would do it! I have shot lots of deer w a firearm but it wasn’t a challenge and I lost interest! But with my longbow even if I do not get a deer I can’t wait to get back in the woods! Thats what seperates the Trad bow hunter from the rest of the hunting world, I have guys ask me all time how do you hunt with that bow all the time? I just smile, they wouldn’t understand if I told them! Good luck!

I am almost reluctant to take a shot up here Northern Mi at dark, unless it is REAL close and dead bang, reason, coyotes, more and more hunters are losing their deer because they arrow the deer at dark, lose the trail and go back only to find the deer several hours later ravaged by the yotes! I have them all around me, I here them callin in AM and especially active right before dark, in fact one almost ran me over couldn’t get an arrow in him though! Most of the guys I know that have lost deer its at nite, I am also more confident in my shooting with a lot of daylight! If it does ever happen I will do the same tag it out and leave it in the woods! I pass on more nite shots than not, I would rather let the animal walk there is always another hunt! A case in point I have been watching this 3pt buck all this fall could a shot him several times but I have bigger bucks and a lot of does so I have gave him a pass! I seen him last nite and he has a damn arrow just under the skin, just above the spine right by the tail! Not fatal and its doesn’t bother him, the arrow is carbon with small veins, compound my guess, from along distance at a bad angle! I think the popularity of crossbows, and all the technology, there will be alot more wounded animals not recovered cause hunters seem to have a false confidence on shot selection as to distance, angles etc and will take more riskier shots! Sometimes things happen the shot was well placed and mortal, the animal is not recovered, thats hunting but I sure like to cut my odds of that happening!

What happens up here is that they will drive around and look for parked vehicles, wait till you leave then go back and set right near your spot, now I only bow hunt even during rifle season, usually they only give it ago for couple days hoping to get a quick kill and then they are gone! There is a lot of state land around me and plenty of room for more hunters with out them hunting out for your back pocket! I ask one guy why he did it and his answer was simple it was easier to infinge on somebodies spot than to scout and and find his own, he didn’t want to put the time in! Thats why I keep my spots secret and make them real unasuming and hard to find! People are really lazy sometimes for sure!

Happens all the time, there a few ethics anymore sad to say I would have been pissed too especially the damn gut pile! If he shot a doe and lost an 8pt earlier he should have quit hunting, as I would have and what hell was he doing in your blind when he shot a doe & lost a buck from his own stand! Sounds like greed to me! I hunt public land but am able to walk to my area so no one knows I even hunt there, I leave no sign that I have been there, as to trail marks, paths etc!I feel for ya but I have had some instances on private land too!

I am the same way I shoot woods and carbons depending on the situation and the bow I am shooting! My selfbow its woods all the way, I also shoot woods with my BamaHunter longbow! I do shoot carbons a lot more with my 2 Bama Expis and my GN Bushbow! I love building wood arrows and they do have a differant feel to them when shot versus carbon! As to durability certainly not as tough as carbon but I haven’t really had any issues with them, besides you get to build more of them! LOL

I started making my own tabs this last summer, I bought scraps of leather from the Tandy leather store as well as some leather tools and got started kinda trial and error as far as shape and leather thickness! I have a tab that I use for a pattern, so far I have made about 20 plus of them, give them to friends as gifts etc! I also make my own bow handle grips too! i have enough leather scraps on hand to never have to buy any again!

When ever I hunt in the afternoon I usually hear Coyotes every nite! We have to recover our deer right away or the Yotes are on them! Back in the late 70s early we always recovered our deer that next morning if it was cold enough, not anymore!

I am hunting on some state land (for the first time) here in Northern Mi that is right behind my house! There is a well used dirt road that runs through the tract of land, & there are several hunting leases adjacent to the state land! I walk an old two track that has grown in to the point that a SUV/truck can’t drive down it cause of overgrowth and down trees! But that does not stop the 4 wheelers and dirtbikes, on the weekend its non stop and as stated lots of younger people I am lucky the noise it doesn’t effect my hunting cause I am back off the road, it just gets annoying with them driving back and forth! What I do worry about is my wife & several other people walk dogs etc & there are lots of blind spots and corners on the main dirt road, they do not slow down and it seems as though its intensified in the last couple years plus they act like they do not give a rip! I have had to put the Fear of God into a couple of them, on a few occasions!

I put one on my Hickory Selfbow, works great, I have a shelf on this bow but was getting erratic arrow flight at times! since I put this toothbrush rest on the bow is dead on all the time! I was skeptical at first but the rest was easy to make so I gave it a try!
