in reply to: Anything Positive @ This Winter? #53526Yes, it’s been a trying winter here in Mn. just brutal cold, actually damaging cold, it’s really really hard on vehicles, homes not to mention people and wildlife.
Fallguy has it for me as well. Solitude outdoors, not many around here brave the colder temps.
Emerald ash borer also takes it in the shorts in this weather too.
in reply to: Update on Larry Fischer vs The Bastard #51329Prayers for Larry and family.
in reply to: Kalamazoo Expo – 2014 #51305That’s too bad, this winter has been a real doozy. I remember a few yrs back my wife and I were staying in Fairfied Inn right next to Perkins. It snowed a foot overnight fri. lucky it was a short drive to the Expo, so I was able to go. We left out for Mn. Sat afternoon while the getting was good, still treacherous all the way past Chicago. Last year I went because of the winter.
in reply to: Latest Issue of TBM #33947I usually take to reading it as soon as it arrives, can’t help it, then I realize I need to slow down and savor the magazine for it’s another 8 weeks before the next issue. Been doing it like this since the beginning.
I love this magazine, it stands for all things good and pure in our sport, without fail.
in reply to: Kansas legalized crossbows during archery season #50446Sorry for Kansas. I am afraid crossbows will bring a new breed of laziness, degrading even more, our already stressed image as sportsman by the non hunting public.
in reply to: What Kind if Winter Have You Had? #50428Still feels like winter here in Mn. plenty of snow on the ground yet. This past week was our 1st thawing weather, temps (40’s) but next week sounds pretty cold for spring.
in reply to: Humidity in new shop (new bow pics added) #46185New construction takes 1-2 yrs to dry to normal levels. lot of moisture in building materials, even concrete takes quite while to cure and dry.
I would run fans, open up windows, doors, what have you, and circulate air, ESPECIALLY when the Relative Humidity is lower outside, exchange air, pay attention to temps as well, do not want to create condensation with extreme temp differences.
All heaters need to be vented outside, avoid at all costs unvented propane heaters, these will bring a lot of moisture into the air, creating more of a problem. The best is a wood burning stove, these will dry out areas the fastest.
in reply to: New Low in archery Hi Tech ! #46072It’s no wonder the anti hunting crowd is growing, we are our own worst enemy. No good can come from gizmo’s like that.
While clicking the remote the other day I came across a commercial for some kind of Ozone thingamajig. The hunter hangs this thing above his head on a tree, turns it on and walla, it eliminates our scent in and around the stand area. NO NEED TO SHOWER OR WATCH WIND DIRECTION. This BTW was a commercial for yet another “pro” and his wife, hunting show, you know the ones, where they all whisper, and we are suppose to hear what they are saying, ya right. just turns my stomach.
in reply to: Barta in a high fence? #7751I have not walked in the mans shoes, so I will reserve my thoughts about him and his way of hunting.
I will say, I respect those that walk quietly without the big stick. Their character I hold in high regard.
in reply to: lower draw weight–cold weather #63345Thanks for the feed back. I kept thinking I just needed to practice more and build up my strength, which I guess practice is a good thing, but many times my joints and/or muscles were already overworked and sore. I did lay off shooting for a extended period one time. Upon resuming shooting, immediately noticed my body had heeled some previously troubled spots……….so hence my caution. I like where I am at right now and really do not want to reinjure cronic pains in my elbows and shoulder.
in reply to: To Good Not to Share #61264Years ago,the end result was my reward, not so these days. Although I still enjoy success, it has taken a back seat just being outdoors. Happy to hear of your failure but getting total satifaction in your time afield. This is especially true when it’s with family. Thanks for sharing.
in reply to: Game camera #46508Search Game camera reviews…..very helpful, with a complete rundown of the popular models, pros and cons.
in reply to: My toes are frozen……. #45765Been in Mn. all my life, work and play outdoors year round.
Loose fitting pac boots and wool socks work the best for me, have extra liners and socks. Rotate liners and dry boots out every night.
Light wool underwear, Duofold makes nice Merino wool underwear in various weights, good stuff.
Loose fitting shirts and pants, along with layering will help tremendously. Traps air around the body and helps keep you warm. Layering cloths allows one to take off and put on as conditions dictate. Like walking to your stand, put outer layers on ONLY when you get to your stand and have allowed moisture to escape your body before putting outerwear back on.
DO NOT overlook your head and neck, keep’em covered as well as well your midsection, especially around your back torso.
None of your clothing has to cost you a forture either, just middle of the road quality will do nicely.
I use alot of cotton, t-shirts shirts, jeans, etc, but I know wool performs better. i use the wool underwear, cottom middle and when it’s really cold, wool outerwear and when it gets really, really, cold I stay by the fire.
