in reply to: HAPPY THANKSGIVING! #42721
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!
in reply to: Coffee on the Rocks #398331shot, what’s the name of the Mexican instant coffee? There are several Mexican grocery stores in our area, and I’d like to try it.
Have also made my own coffee bags by tying a coffee filter with dental floss around a good scoop of coffee. Makes pretty fair brew.
in reply to: Heat gun glue for arrows? #57268Craft glue is all I’ve used for years. I bought a big bag at a cheap price. I’ve never lost a point, field or broadhead. I wash the points out with alcohol, then burn that out with my torch.
in reply to: REAL primitive bowhunting! #55838Dave, your comments about kids growing up around animals reminded me of a little story my brothers and I were told. We were hunting buffalo in Zimbabwe with legendary PH Roy Vincent. His wife, Rene, and he told us about their son, Alan, who is now a PH also. When Alan was a little guy, the parents noted that the pool of resident hippos were getting very upset any time they approached the river’s edge. Come to find out, young Alan was going down there and wearing them out with his BB gun.
in reply to: video recommendations #15179Steve Gorr, of Cascade Archery, along with Fred Anderson, has two of the most enjoyable videos my wife and I have ever seen, and we have watched a bunch. Good friends, hunting, stumping, stealing arrows out of each other’s quivers, and just plain having fun. Bowhunting Refection’s and Pure Bowhunting are delightful works that I’m confidant any bowhunter will enjoy. Steve also has an older video called (I think) An Alaskan Bowhunting Family. Get them all. You’ll be glad you did. Dealing with Steve is like dealing with an old friend.
in reply to: Naming your bow #47123Mine would have to be “Lightnin”. Never strikes twice in the same place.
in reply to: Abell's instinctive shooting books – a question #25519I would say read his first book first. That is where all the basics are explained, and should be the foundation if you want to learn his style. It’s very entertaining, informative, and will probably answer a lot of questions. It did for me, anyway.
in reply to: It's Time Again! #19008I’ve had the privilege of attending Tom Kelley’s turkey hunting school at Westervelt Lodge in Alabama, not just once but twice. He’s a real character, more entertaining and just fun to be around than you can imagine. Also, a real gentleman true to his southern roots.
in reply to: Finding bigfoot #17544There’s only one choice for the broadhead, the Sasquatch, by Zephyr(sp) I believe.
in reply to: Private land (more ethics) #33547Years ago I met a lady land-owner, who gave me permission to deer hunt. She encouraged me to come and kill deer at night, because they were in her garden. She DID NOT have any kind of legal status to allow this, but she really tried to talk me into night shooting. Later, I asked about shooting some doves on her place, and she got all excited, and said “No, I don’t allow any dove shooting. Doves are mentioned in the Bible!” This was (is) fairly common across much of the South.
On opening day of deer season, it became apparent that she stopped people on the road to give them hunting permission. Her yard looked like a parking lot. We stayed til daylight, ducking centerfire rifle shots that folks were throwing at flying duck, then low crawled to the vehicle and got out of there. Going down the road, one of our crew remembered a friend who had property, so we stopped by, got permission, and have been hunting there since 1972. We’ve become great friends with the family.
in reply to: Thanks to Don and Lori Thomas #28904My wife and I ambushed Don right after his talk at PBS Nashville, with a stack of his books we wanted him to sign.He was very much a gentleman. First, he introduced us to his lovely wife, Lori. Then he signed all our books, engaging us in conversation the whole time.
Later, I emailed him with a question about recommending a bird book for a trip we were taking to Africa. He answered almost immediately with a title, but also told me they were on a speaking trip, and he would mail me again when he got home with more info. Within a few days, he sent me more titles, and good wishes. No big ego there. Just a really nice man with exceptional manners.

in reply to: I'm going to give a bow away (winner on pg3) #40736Throw my name in the hat, Troy. I need a new bow to shoot those barrel-tapered hickory shafts I got from you at Enid Dam.
in reply to: Congratulations Dave Petersen! #32103Dave, as a long time reader, I’m proud of you, and I’m proud for you. Keep up the good work; you inspire others to action.
