in reply to: I increased my FOC!!!! #41255
Basically, Ed, if I’m reading that right, you want everything from the widest point of the arrow (the outermost reach of the broadhead blades) to the nock of the arrow to represent a “taper” so to speak, even if the arrow shaft itself doesn’t actually taper (such as the Grizzly Stik). Correct me if I’m wrong or off in what I wrote.

in reply to: Center Shot ain't always good! #39557I think I also now understand the difference between center-cut and center-shot…lol…I was just waiting for somebody else to ask the question for me…haha…Thanks Patrick. And thanks Jason and Ed, too.

in reply to: Shoulder Shots 2 #39538OK, let’s forget the bow and arrow, let’s go to baseballs? 😆
All joking aside, my bow, with a roughly 590 grain arrow, cooks out there at rougly 170 fps. Not the fastest bow on the market, necessarily. As for my KE, I think I’m right around 32 ft/lb. Nowhere near what they have posted at the bow shop for “exotic” game. Not that I want to hunt Africa or anything like that.

in reply to: Shoulder Shots 2 #37006Bert,
Thanks. That’s all I was looking for was what the MA stood for – Mechanical Advantage – Just didn’t know the full lettering. Thanks.

in reply to: A good product hits the market #36995Good deal. I may have to look into these when I get some spare change. The fewer pieces to move around, the better, in my opinion. This will help eliminate a potential “weak link).

Just one quick question…I keep seeing the reference to MA, but I don’t know what it means. Could you clarify this for me? Thanks.

in reply to: Shoulder Shots 2 #31494Ed,
Thanks. I’ll most likely go the route of carbons then. Not to be lazy, but I don’t really want to spend a bunch of money that I don’t have, and wind up messing up good wood shafts. Perhaps someday when I get to making my own, or have the luxury of extra money to play with (yeah, right), I’ll buy some good wood footed shafts. What about a tapered shaft? Thicker at the front than the back? And what diameters would a person shoot for on a tapered shaft?

in reply to: Shoulder Shots 2 #31479Dr. Ashby,
You post a ton of very useful information for us to mull over and use. Thank you.
I’ve been an aluminum shooter for the extent of my nearly 8 year shooting career. However, when I did try to build an EFOC aluminum arrow, I had problems with the sides of my arrows blowing out. Too brittle of a material to build with? What are your thoughts? Are your EFOC arrows carbon, aluminum or wood? Due to my severe inexperience with wood, I’m considering switching to a carbon shaft for the ease of gaining FOC.

in reply to: eye dominant issue #23817that would be a serious advantage over most hunters…i’ve been working on training myself with my rifle to do just that, and let me tell ya….THAT is some work…lol

in reply to: Opinion on Wood Arrow Spine? #23815George,
You mentioned static and dynamic in reference to a person’s release. What are these? Can you explain the difference? Your reference made me curious.

in reply to: Fred Bear Grizzly #23807Droptine makes a very valid point. I didn’t buy my bow, it was given to me to use until I can buy a bow for myself, and at that point, I will return it to my uncle. You can find almost any bow you want on E-Bay, if you take the time to watch the auctions. I’ve watched bow after bow after bow that was just flat gorgeous, and bid on several, only to be outbid in the final minute or two of the auction, or the bid went too high for me, at which time I backed out. You can get a good bow for fairly inexpensive off the auctions. Good luck.

in reply to: For those of you that hunt with wood arrows #22347I shoot aluminums because they’re cheap and easy to tune. When I have more money and time at my disposal (somewhere down the road lies a pot of gold with my name on it), I’ll give wood a try. I may even make an attempt at making some of my own from scratch. We’ll see. Until then, aluminum for me.

in reply to: How do you hang your bow? #22332I don’t typically hang my bow…if it’s not in my hands, I have it laying on the ground in front of or beside me. I don’t treestand hunt, just due to preference. If I’m on stand or stalking an animal, I’ll have an arrow on the string. If I’m just going through the brush, or walking a trail, I usually don’t have an arrow nocked.

in reply to: 3Rivers Archery Catalog: FOC Recommendation #22069Ok, I was going to apologize, but if you don’t want me to, I won’t…lol. I shoot the Woodsman head, and like it. It’s a long, mean, slicing machine. I am planning to work on upping my FOC, and eventually switch over to a 2-blade, but for now, I like what I have. They fly like darts, and usually hit where I’m looking (which isn’t always what I should be looking at, by the way…lol) Anyway, good to know that somebody’s putting together a chart on this stuff. I may have to try and get a catalog, though I haven’t had any luck with 3Rivers or Kustom King sending me one, lately.
