      Wild,

Good luck this spring. I can understand the Alberta government wanting the wild hogs gone. They can really make a mess of the environment in a hurry. I didn’t realize there were any so close to Montana. I had heard of them being in Southern Idaho, but I didn’t know we had any on the northern side of us. I think it’s only a matter of time before they run from Mexico to Canada and Pacific to Atlantic Oceans. They’re a very prolific creature.

        Dave,

Congratulations on your Coues buck!! This has been a long journey for you. While your deer may not be a “Booner” buck, I’m sure the trophy status of that deer will be right up there with some of your biggest bucks. To take one of these deer with a bow, and a longbow at that, is quite a feat. I did a short search on Coues whitetail outfitters, and it seemed like almost all of them were advertising rifle hunts accompanied by pictures of ear-width 4-5 point (western count) bucks. Nice bucks, but I don’t think I could appreciate one of those bucks if I shot it with a rifle like you will undoubtedly appreciate that forked horn you took with your longbow. Again, nice job, and awesome pictures. And your self portrait reminds me of Santa after he’s been down a couple dirty chimneys!! Congratulations again, Dave!

How many strands is your string? I would recommend silencers, for sure, as that could be a big part of it. Play with your brace height. I don’t remember offhand, but I think mine on my K-mag is pushing 8 3/4″ or something like that. I shoot Dacron on mine, but I buy my strings pre-made. Good luck.

I’ve only hunted off the ground twice…once was my first year deer hunting. We were hunting my dad’s friend’s place, and he has some elevated platforms along the treeline next to his fields. Other time, I climbed a big birch to sit on a limb about 10 feet up…that lasted less than 20 minutes. I’m a ground hunter. Mostly still hunting and hiking. Everything I’ve killed has been from the ground.

I’m another that was too busy this year to put time into hitting the woods. Only trips out included taking a friend’s 12 year old out on our opening day of rifle season, and helping my sister’s boyfriend pack his bull out on Halloween. At least I got a share of the meat for the 12 hours I put in helping pack 😀 I enjoy reading everybody’s recounts of their seasons and their individual hunts, too. Keep’em coming!

Beautiful little longbow!! My first recurve was a 58″ Grizzly, and now I also have a 54″ Kodiak Magnum. I love my shorter bows. Haven’t shot a lot of longer bows, so I can’t say how much I like those.

                  Mike,

I’ve been over the Skalkaho pass once, several years ago, after visiting one of the sapphire mines near Philipsburg. I’ve had many people tell me about all the elk and mule deer down in those areas, but have never made it down to check it out myself. Now, this year, I embark on a new adventure, as my wife and I will be moving to Texas sometime this year. Gonna miss Montana, but I’m hoping to be able to come back every now and again to go hunting.

                    Mike,

I was merely jesting about the limit on grouse. I didn’t figure you shot all of them. What I’ve read of yours, you know what’s going on and seem like a straight shooter. Those grouse do taste good 😀 Especially fried in butter after being rolled in egg and flour.

Were you up in the Pintler Wilderness for your pack-in? I’ve never hunted down around Missoula or any of that country…always somewhere up around Kalispell, except for a couple rare exceptions. Have a good’un. Take care.

What part of Montana were you hunting for elk? Btw, daily limit on mountain grouse is either 3 or 4 birds per day, just so’s ya know 😀 Look like good eatin birds, though.

My mom was a year and a week away from being born, and my real dad was within about a month of being born!! LOL!! My first big game animal ALSO, was a whitetail doe, taken with my Grizzly recurve and a 2018 Legacy aluminum shaft with a 125 grain Bear razorhead. Small doe, probably a yearling, but she had a fawn on her, though I didn’t realize it until it was time to dress her out, and her bags had milk in them. I don’t recall what year it was, offhand, at this point. Five or six years ago, though. I was hunting with my uncle, who got me into traditional archery in the first place.

This shot might be a little more realistic, this is where I want more than I need.

kingwouldbee…The only point I was trying to make with my diagram is that even by aiming ON the shoulder, as Ed suggests, the shoulder blade sits well above and forward of the vitals’ center of mass. I was just trying to show from a broadside view how much of the vitals are actually open for a shot in that position. But you are right. A high percentage of whitetail hunters probably hunt from tree stands. To answer your question, no, I don’t hunt from a pit blind, and nor do I hunt from a tree stand. I don’t cater to heights particularly well, so I hunt flat on my feet on the ground. But you’re right. For a tree-stand hunter, your diagram is much more realistic. I didn’t take a long time to search for the one I posted, either, though. Thank you for adding your diagram to give an idea what kind of armor, if you will, a deer has above its vitals.

Also, I agree with you that it was equipment failure that resulted in deer walking around with arrows protruding from their sides. I’m willing to bet both deer in your pictures were shot with compounds. Speed only helps so much with momentum. If there’s no real weight to continue carrying the momentum, the penetration will be minimal, as seen in these photos. Thank you for those examples of equipment failure, as well as your own photographs of equipment success!! Nice hog, by the way. Impressive penetration.

I was able to find a well-drawn diagram of a whitetail deer’s anatomy. If you look at it, you can see that the shoulder blade is actually quite high on the deer. Basically clear up against the spine. Who’s going to shoot that high on purpose anyway? So by aiming farther forward than the crease behind the shoulder, WHY NOT aim farther forward and put your point of aim closer to the center of the vital mass? Here’s the diagram. Let’s see if it’ll actually work for me or not.

I don’t believe that Ed, sapcut or anybody else is saying that it’s perfectly OK to try shooting big game up the butt or through the shoulder blades. What they are saying, I believe, is that it is better to be “over-arrowed” for the shot that does hit these areas than to be “under-arrowed” for the same shot. Basically, would you rather face a charging grizzly or brown bear with a .22LR, or the aforementioned 375 H&H? I’ll take the 375 any day, because it’s going to give me much better penetration than the .22. Sure, nobody wants to face a charging ANYTHING (at least not the sane people that I know), but when you find yourself in that situation, why not have the extra “oomph” in your corner? That’s where the high FOC and internal/external footed arrows come in. More “oomph” equals a better outcome in the end, for when things don’t go as planned.

When my wife and I first got together, I took her to a couple 3-d shoots with my aunt and uncle. They had a light-poundage recurve that she was able to borrow. Come to find out, due to a toy-related accident when she was a little girl (her brother hit her with a wood block in the right eye), she is now left eye dominant. We tried having her close her left eye, and looked at some cheaper new left-hand recurves at one of the local shops, but couldn’t find anything we really wanted for her. At another shoot, my uncle was talking with an older gentleman there that deals in used bows, and found out that he had just what we were looking for in a Shakespeare Wonderbow, leftie, 35#, 64″, with a serial number D2367. We got it and 1/2 dozen wood arrows for it for about seventy-five bucks.

                                  Richie,

Go ahead and drop me an e-mail, so that I can save any information/e-mails back and forth for future use without having to search all of the threads on here. lol. How much FOC/EFOC did you get on your son’s arrows, and what did you end up with for total weight, etc? And the info where you get the Entradas would be great, too. Appreciate it a ton.
