in reply to: SBD bowstrings? #43944

Dave, I know that KMag very well, It used to be mine. Are you using a FF on it? My bow is the same age and in about the same condition. What strand string are you using on it?

Dave, did you try a SBD on your KMAGS? How did it work out if you did? I was thinking about putting one on my Grayling Super Mag 48.

Has anyone on this site other than Dave had a Bigfoot encounter? I know it defies all logic and reason, but I prefer a world where the possibility exists.

I have two Super Magnum 48’s. A 50# and a 60#. They are both Grayling bows from 69-72 vintage. I deer and turkey hunt with them here in Ohio. I love these bows and they are all I use. I like the Grayling Bows because I think they look better than the current black laminate, and I just enjoy shooting an older bow. All the problems that I read about with short bows like finger pinch, hand shock, cant draw to 29″ and stacking I have just not experienced. My idea of hand shock anyway is shootin a Smith and Wesson 329PD 44mag. On the plus side they are the nicest bows to hunt with either from the ground or a tree. Get one, hunt with it, you will not regret it.

I have two Bear Super Mag48’s that I hunt with and a Kodiak Mag all Grayling made bows. Short is the only way to go. My longest bow is a Horne custom T/D 58″. The Horne and the Kmag are for sale if you are interested.

Most of my old Bears use a brace height between 8″-9″. Most closer to 9″ to get them to shoot quiet and best. They are all 68-74 model bows K-mags and Super 48’s.

You could always skip the rain suit and use an umbrella. It could also double as a blind.

Few years back I purchased Guide Series Tech 2.5 rainsuit from Gander Mt. Flexible, light, packable(pants and jacket come with a stuff sack). Quiet well not as quiet as wool. I throw it on as an outer layer for a shower but if it is a day long rain I put it on between my long johns and my outer layer. Cotton during turkey season and fleece or wool in the fall/winter.

This may be a bit off topic , but is there a source for shrink wrap fletching using feathers? I see them for vanes of various sizes but have been unable to locate any with feathers. I think this would be a quick easy way to experiment with different feather sizes and colors etc. they also seem highly visible so it may offset the smaller feathers in flight and make it easier to see the arrow. I would like to try smaller fletching but I do not have the tools to fletch my own arrows and not sure I want to.

I shoot the same arrow and have the same problem. I use the nock tuning tool from 3rivers archery. It is foolproof.

There was a great article with a lot of technical backup in an issue of TBM about a year ago. Beaver balls as I remember was the best choice looking at sound suppresion without too much loss in speed.

Lansky meet Tusker. That is what I used with a coarse diamond stone.

I tried them. I liked the price. I never could sharpen them to my satisfaction. I am not the best at sharpening far from it but I spent hours and hours on those heads and my results were marginal at best. Shot at a doe missed over her back hit an oak the head bent. Shot at another doe missed hit a hickory and the adapter drove up into head and split it. In fairness I did kill a couple deer with them. This past year I switched to 160 gr STOS and 100gr adapter they come razor sharp easy to touch up very durable and kill deer they are very reasonably priced also. Just my experience hope it helps.

I like the STOS BH I have absolutely no complaints with them. If I would ever change heads it would be to the Abowyer but for deer the STOS works just fine and I like the price much better.

                                  Ireland,
I enjoy shooting more than tinkering but I am n the mood to play around with this. I want to keep the bh,adapter, and insert the same so do you have any suggestions for a lighter skinnier arrow?
