Semper Fi brothers and thank you for your service. My 4 years in the Corps were pretty uneventful 85-89. 9 months at Marine Barracks 8th&I and 3 years Camp David. My biggest regret in life is getting out. I’m currently a plumber here in Omaha NE and have a wife and 5 kids. I killed my first deer with a Howatt Hunter in 84 that my dad gave me. I stayed trad till 98 then fell victim to the wheels for about 6 years. I found my way back to real archery and never looked back. I currently hunt with a custom D-shaped longbow my bother made for me and I still have that old Howatt I dust off and shoot every once and a while.

I do a lot of public land hunting even though I have access to some small private acreages. I fear that some day thats the only land us blue collar types will have left to hunt on. I don’t think much of Outfitters trying to buy up all the private tracks of land and then charging some outrageous amount of money to kill an animal. They’ll not see a red dime of my hard earned money. I’ll hunt public land and enjoy the property that I pay for with all the licenses I’ve purchased over the years.

I hope I’m not repeating something that has already been written, but I don’t recall reading this. The reason I love to bowhunt is for the adventure that is about to play out before me. The not knowing what might happen at every tick of the clock, that will be ingrained in your memory forever. Be it good or bad. Hopefully more of the good, but regardless it’s your memory. That’s the kind of excitement that gets me out of bed at 4:30 AM when it’s 6-below outside. While a lot of people will never understand that, they also will never have experienced the kind of thrill we bowhunters do in their worlds, that don’t include the outdoors. We are the players not the fans.

My brother cracks me up. He has always shot wood arrows until recently he bought a dozen carbon shafts, because he got tired of breaking them during practice. ( lots of rocks behind the target ) Well he set them up, stabbed them in his quiver, and went hunting. As soon as he got home he pulled them back out. I asked him why? He told me he couldn’t stand the site of them in his quiver. He’s done that twice now. I think he’s done. Me I’m just fine with my cedars. I would like to try some surewoods, but can’t get the spine I need. Out of stock on certain spines.

I do not claim to know a whole lot, but I would like to offer you a couple of tips that work for me. First I would move up close, like 5-yards or so. Then I would close my eyes, and practice coming to full draw, with a good solid anchor. After doing that a couple of times, open your eyes pick a spot and release. Making sure you concentrate on a good follow thru. I believe the follow thru is one of the most important links to accuracy. Also when my brother and I started to develop the panic our dad would have us just shoot into a dirt bank instead of at the target. It helped us just to relax and concentrate on our form. I hope this will be some help to you. Nothing is worth giving up something you love to do. Stick it out you will conquer this.

I’m about to take the longbow plunge. I’ve always shot recurves, then my brother and his hunting buddy started building longbows. The bows they made are pure works of art. When they offered to make me one, I was all over it. Anyway my brother called me last night and said it should be done by Sunday. I can’t wait. I’m looking forward to the new challenge of a different kind of stick.

I don’t believe you will ever see that. In a lot of cases, it’s all about the short-cut to success. A good number of bowhunters today are just rifle hunters that are looking for a longer season. These guys aren’t looking for a simple stick & string.
