in reply to: Heavier broadheads #14188Stumpkiller wrote: My “problem” is that I have hundreds of arrows used with seven different bows and many, many unmounted points and broadheads all of 125 or 130 grains. Just from a financial standpoint I’m not starting over with heavier points even if someone demonstrates it is an improvement. I know they work very well.
I shoot nice, already heavy wood shafts.
I’m of the same opinion and in the same situation Charlie. My arrows are all spined with 145g heads – though I’ve noticed that adding another 30g isn’t terribly noticeable unless you are on the verge of being too heavy or too light in spine as it is. I swapped out some 145g for 160g last week and it didn’t affect me all that much.
in reply to: How about hunting bear in Michigan? #10696We have a lot of bears but they are definitely all in the U.P. You’ll be hard pressed to find a shooter in lower Michigan. You never hear about it.
I know of one guy that shot one recently and I’m sure he did a LOT of scouting.
Everyone I know goes up to Camp Larkin in Canada.A friend’s son owns it. And I’ve heard they have a pretty good group rate. Two guys I know came back with black bears already.
You said you didn’t want to mess with passports though. Understandable.
in reply to: waterproofing #9957I haven’t found anything I liked. Best way to keep them dry is to cover them up.
in reply to: Beavertail longbow grip! #62793I’m jealous as all hell right now.
My beaver tails are apparently on the way and I’ll have my own date with punch and needle.:D
in reply to: Tradtional feather shape! #62790I like ’em Dad! Maybe that should be your trademark.
in reply to: Chopping wild turkey feathers. Help! #38797Steve Graf wrote: Setting aside all matters of economics and access to natural feathers, here is the question: If you want your arrows to fly straight, why would you use feathers from a bird that can’t fly at all?
😆 That comment made my Monday Steve! Good point.
The feathers I cut and ground actually made nice banana-cuts but I’m not sure it was worth the trouble.
in reply to: Left Wing, Right Wing,,,no difference #37019ReadyHawk wrote: I have a left wing helical clamp and have been fletching with left wing feathers all along. A friend gave me some right wing feathers…so I fletched them up the way I always do, which amounted to right wing feathers in a left wing clamp. The arrows flew the same with NO difference in point of impact! Either my bow is incredible tuned (BamaBow Elite Classic) or it makes no difference to the feather which clamp you use.
I shoot Bama’s too and don’t think it has anything to do with tuning. I would have to see what you are doing to know for sure.
When I started fletching my own arrows I made every mistake imaginable – including fletching LW in a RW clamp. It didn’t work out very well.
Did you lessen the extremity of your helical? You could definitely make it work by adjusting your clamp to fletch more like a straight clamp would.
I think the only issue you would run into is trying to get the feather to sit properly and glue flush on both ends.
Also, what fletching are you using shape wise?
I agree with you Mudd. I just started fletching LW because I’m finding a larger variety of feathers on clearance in LW. I don’t notice any difference.
in reply to: Chopping wild turkey feathers. Help! #37015Wow – I don’t know why I triple posted that time. Sheesh.
in reply to: Chopping wild turkey feathers. Help! #37014I’d like to try goose feathers at some point too!
in reply to: Chopping wild turkey feathers. Help! #37013Thanks Dave! I appreciate it. I have a feeling that the feathers I was cutting were a bit too old. The quills were cracking beyond my control under the blade.
I’ll have to experiment with the softness of the feathers after chopping. I wonder if spraying them with something may stiffen them a bit. Is it silicon that some folks use on their feathers to water proof them?
That may help and I’m not out anything for trying.
in reply to: My New Longbow #34009I LOVE cocobola. Nice bow! Very slick looking!
