in reply to: Cane/bamboo arrows #12380

I know that there are still a number of southern archers who use cane arrows from selfbows, with the general opinion being they’re some of the best arrows there are. I think I might know someone who employs “Ashby tecniques” with cane arrows, but he seems to be one of the few. I’ll talk to him and see if I can find anymore out:).

Thanks David! Right now I’m trying to get around cost- not moving to more expensive carbons or anything like that. I’ll be moving to Florida to work with a friend in the summer, and hog hunting will be on the agenda- and I really don’t want to loose a fine, yet expensive, carbon arrow in the swamp:) The plan was to taper the hickory shafts (5/16″ nocks and whatever is necessary in the front) and put a big head on the front. I’ll try to see what I can do to make them work.

The “Socks” you mention, is that just a section of aluminum arrow, or are those the Woodscrew adapters like the ones in 3Rivers?

On a side note, I was planning on using the El Grande Grizzly with these arrows. If they don’t work out perfectly, they’d boost the weight- and FOC- of my carbons and I can just retune my bow to the lower spine:D

Thanks Dr. Ashby! At the moment I have some birch dowels left, and am primarily using carbons- but my carbons are only 600 gr. and expensive! I was planning to try some hickory arrows next, which sparked my initial concern.

I’ll play with the birch before I order the hickory. I’m glad to know it’s just a matter of figuring out how to get the EFOC, and not that there’s something WRONG:D

I remember a while back someone on another site made a bow from an Osage log they found drifitng in the river after a big local flood. In the end they had to go down about three inches of wood to get a good ring, but it shot fine- nothing really superior to normal staves. Not sure if it’s the same thing though?

in reply to: How many bowyers? #57954

I build my own selfbows and backed bows, some for friends, and sold a few here and there. Couldn’t afford to buy longbows and recurves, so I just tried to get good at making them. Still working on it:wink:. I’ve built alot of them over the past four or five years… weren’t really that good until recently though!

I’m a young pup (18 ), so I’ve no experience on game, but I enjoy shooting heavier bows. I build my own longbows, and they normally pull between 70# and 85# at 29.5″. I started going heavy because I didn’t know about design, so I just made them heavier. I keep shooting them because I like them though, and because it does give me more confidence that if given an opportunity, I could put the arrow through an animal. I’m still learning alot about bow design and building, but the lightest I’d personally like to hunt with would be 65#. I’m milking being young for all it’s worth:wink:

And considering I’m pretty scrawny, it’s a nice little ego boost:lol:
