Dr. Ashby
I am sorry for your loss. You will be in my prayers.

in reply to: Native Finds #49556Living in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains in North Arkansas for most of my life has given me the opportunity to pick up arrowheads while roaming as a child. As a child I found a perfect dovetail point on my dad’s property. I know own the land adjacent to it and take delight in knowing that long before my family, ancient tribes hunted the property as well.
in reply to: NEW TO TRADITIONAL #49551Welcome!
The resources mentioned are great. Also stay tuned to this site to get good info on lots of trad bow topics. As you get the basics of form down, shoot, shoot, shoot, and have fun!
in reply to: 100 Year Anniversary Main Hunting Shoe #43969I started wearing the LL Bean Maine Hunting Boots as a result of reading about them in TBM. Boy, have they lived up to the good reputation. I have hunted in them for the entire deer season, which in Arkansas means temperatures from 65 to 20. I have been very pleased with the comfort, sneaking-quiet soles, and ability to shed water.
As Dave said, get them with speed laces.
Personally, I wouldn’t pay an extra 30 dollars for the anniversary model. I would buy the regular ones and get two great pairs of wool socks with the extra 30 bucks.

in reply to: Mother Earth News #42860Centrist? Ho! I never thought that ole DP would be considered middle of the road in any of his views. Must be a heck of a wide road. 8)
In all seriousness, one of the great things about Dave is that he doesn’t wear any label very well…and I suspect most of us don’t either. Thank God for that!
in reply to: The Proverbial Soapbox #42851Tim, hmmm…that is a good question. I have three thoughts in response:
1. At times, I am not satisfied with the decisions of my Game/Fish Agency. It seems that some decisions are made on sound biology while others appear to be borne out of politics. Either way, as a law-abiding citizen I am bound to follow them.
2. I live close enough to several other states such as Missouri, Oklahoma, Illinois, and Tennessee that have good hunting that I could drive to, and have at times, to hunt if I want to. The option of having states that border, or are close to, my home state is a blessing and a luxury. They are a possibility for hunting, but not my preferred one. I go to them for the sake of a new adventure, not as a primary place for hunting.
3. I can’t stop hunting in my home state, and on my family’s property, because it is my home and heritage. I love the woods that I have known since childhood and hunted with my dad and granddad. While my first reason was a moral one and the second was a matter of preference; this reason is one that is spiritual/emotional: I am just too darn connected to the woods that I hunt to forsake them. It may sound a bit sappy, but it is true.
With all of that said, I do believe that my connection to where I hunt, and the state that I love, are two solid reasons to be active, assertive, and intelligently vocal in matters of conservation and hunters’ rights. To me, loving your state and its hunting opportunities means digging in more to help improve it, rather than leaving it to those decision-makers who have values, passions, and principles that are less pure than yours.
Just my opinion…

That is awesome! Congratulations! As a dad, with three young daugthers, I applaud you for getting them outdoors, shooting bows, and spending time together. 😀

in reply to: who carrys a backup gun #41696No wolves or cougars (supposedly none, but that is a different thread for the Arkansas guys on the site) here in Arkansas. The black bears here are few and far between. So, the only time that I carry a back up gun is when visiting in-laws, or around rattlesnake country, though both are very similar.

in reply to: Dave Petersen's new avatar #41673If youth is squandered on the young, then what is middle age wasted on?
in reply to: "The Grey" #35401Well…since the movie got a bad review, maybe we should crank up another episode of trad bow guy movie trivia.
Perhaps we might switch to “Rock songs from the 70’s/80’s” instead…Dave may dominate this one.8)
in reply to: New DVD from Mana'o Productions #35362Smithhammer,

in reply to: Who Hunts Alone Most of the Time? #35358Fellas, it seems that we share a passion for the solitude of the woods/hunt. I have to say that we are a small band of folks. It seems nowadays that most everywhere people are jabbering away on cell phones, playing songs/games on smart phones, or absorbing TV nonsense. Pardon the stern tone, but, my generation is rapidly losing the ability to be alone successfully, and to be quiet for long periods of time.
The introspection, peace, contentment, and “worship” that our souls/minds long to experience and embrace cannot be practiced in the midst of hustle and bustle. I, for one, would be less of a person were it not for the solitude of the hunt, along with the many blessings those quiet, still moments bring.
I fear for my three little ones who are growing up in a culture that embraces all things technological and ignores most things natural. As I try to swim upstream against this ideology with my children, many of you do as well with your kids, or grandkids. Long live those who can sit still by an oak, hunt traditionally, think purely, and soak in God’s creation.

in reply to: Fantastic Armguard #35076Dave
It looks dandy! My knife/armguard combo should arrive this week. Overbuilt, yes; overpriced, no, IHMO. The workmanship, and durability, is excellent. I will post pics of mine when it arrives. I chose the Bocote handle.
Please shake hands with Tim and pass along my greetings at PBS. I will be gearing up for turkey season then.
I am going to check with him and see if he can make an armguard for a child. My daugher Emma, turning nine tomorrow, got a new longbow for Christmas, and I think that she deserves a fancy armguard as well!! 😆
