in reply to: Turkey Hunting to Bear Scouting #48916
My bad man. Sorry, I went off there. It’s been an extremely trying week and sometimes the mouth works quicker than the brain.
Hopefully we can provide some bear pictures.
If you dig through some older threads, I wrote up an account of our hunt last year. Included is a picture of a pig I killed and a video of a bear I shot running with the arrow past Tailfeather.

My dad never wanted to bother them much. The other thing is, in PA you have to deliver the whole bear, field dressed, to a check point. That means, unless you kill a real small bear, you need a crew. That’s how most guys hunt them here. Consider putting a story together on your hunt, whether you get one or not. It would be interesting to read about a bear hunt not centered over a barrel of donuts. thanks, dwc
I can promise you that baiting bears, YOURSELF, is much more work and is much more challenging that what we are doing here.
I hunted bears for six hours in archery season last year and saw nine bears. I shot one and sadly made a poor shot that was far too quartered away, and should have killed another bruin that I had at six yards but my arrow fell off the string.
I acted like a total amateur bear boy last year, but I’ve never ever ever had chances like that in the bear camps of canada. Work-wise, this is a joke by comparison.
People should stop reading about bear baiting and actually try it for a few weeks. Then we’ll see what a turkey shoot it is. The same goes for hounding. Train a pack of bear dogs, then watch a few of your beloved get killed in the mix, then tell me how easy and unethical it all is.
in reply to: Steel Master Broadhead Sharpener #48180Watch some youtube videos of Chris Spikes hunting with Simmons Tree Sharks.
They don’t just look “nasty”. There is a lot of science behind why convex broadheads fly better, penetrate better, and cut a wider hole than any straight edge head ever dreamed about. If you can’t get them sharp, try harder. They cut a hole that should be reserved for spears.

I know how you like to turkey hunt, but it’ll be hard to shoot a recurve out of a truck window.

Work up a real good burr first with a steel file. Just push straight up on the blade. Then use the instructions with the sharpener. I’m afraid of touch them now.
in reply to: Steel Master Broadhead Sharpener #47501Sent an email to Simmons and got the answer pretty much immediately.
The steel master got em shaving my leg hairs inside of five minutes.
Love Simmons. I’ll never shoot anything else.
in reply to: Dividing the spoils #43373We don’t typically split up any meat, but we have very liberal seasons here in the south and I don’t know anybody who doesn’t end up with plenty of meat at the end of the fall.
When somebody helps me out on a blood trail, or dragging, or especially packing one out of the mountains, they’ll usually end up with a ham or backstrap.
in reply to: Noise, wheels and getting around. #42250I wish 4 wheelers were illegal everywhere. I don’t care if it’s private property or not. If you don’t want to use your legs, you might as well be a parapalegic. People these days are so pathetic.
in reply to: How to repair bow? #40510coastalbendbows wrote: I reskinned a couple bows for people. It wasn’t that hard to do. I used a razor knife to scrape off the old skins. Then I lightly sanded with 220 grit and re-sprayed with thunderbird.
Another bow I did the same way with the taking off and sanding with 220 grit. Then I took a piece of 100 grit and marred the glass a bit and applied some timber rattlers too with TB III. Let it dry a couple days and setup then I descaled the skins. Hand rubbed Tru-oil finish.
Not sure what all tools you have or your spray finish capabilities are. if you willing to take the project on yourself as a start measures your tiller as a reference and when sanding the limbs only sand the finish/glue off. Try your best not to get into the glass. Also check with Samick to see what finish they use and use the same finish. If not theres a good chance that the two different finishes will react and bubble up and peel.
Feel free to message or call me I can help you along or point you in the right direction.
Shawn
Thanks for the info. Guess I’ll start looking for some road killed snakes. I killed two copperheads for the skins last year but I can’t see killing more of em.
in reply to: Making the bevel switch #39932I’ve never been more impressed with anything in hunting gear like I have been with Simmons tree sharks, but after talking to you and doing some research, I’m interested to see some results.
I doubt I’ll give up my tree sharks, but I can’t wait to see what one does to a North Georgia Black Bear!

😀
I can’t wait. It’s by far the best hunting camp of the year. I’d trade most of my hunting season for five days in the backwoods with a recurve.
in reply to: Send Through the US Postal Service!!!!!! #39885I’m blown away by this, especially because I bought a very expensive bow based on the fact that I’d get paid for my broken one.
It’s not going to put me in the poor house, but I just can’t believe that such a massive company would treat a customer this way. I own my own business and I’ve eaten bigger costs than this because of my mistakes. Pathetic.
Either way, they will lose more money because of this than I will. I sent a scathing email and will not use them for any shipping my business does. I’ll also pass the word along to anybody who will listen that they are a pathetic and, surprisingly more expensive, shipping company.
in reply to: Turkey Hunting to Bear Scouting #39874tailfeather wrote: Excellent. Gonna be a fine camp again this year, even considering the company.
If you want to stay in South Georgia, I’ll happily take over your spot…..
in reply to: On The Wild Edge #39584My favorite part about that book is that you cut one of your cabin supports to the wrong length, and instead of fixing it, just cut the rest to match. 😀
When I read that, I said, “That’s exactly what I would have done too”
