in reply to: My bow was dry fired twice #26510
I didn’t check it with a magnifier but have run a fingernail over every lamination on the bow and can’t find anything. And yes, my bow will be staying in my hands from here on. I tied up a little extra serving today to keep the arrows on a little tighter.
in reply to: grouse and woodcock #19315Grouse are a perfect expample of how hunting pressure can change animal’s responses over the course of generations. In the east, where they have been hunted for ages, they will hardly hold for a point and flush at the earliest sign of danger. Out west and in Canada, they seem as dumb as barnyard chickens.
I’ve gotten within 10 feet of them dozens of times in canada. Most guys “hunting” them up there would just drive the roads with a .22 pistol and pop them out of the window.
in reply to: Harvest limits #19307In Ga, you can kill up to 10 does and two bucks. One must have 4 points on one side. But there are a ton of check in wma hunts that allow you to kill bonus deer. I’ve spoken with many people who have legally killed 10+ bucks per year.
You can kill two black bears and three gobblers.
in reply to: Cold Shots #17455I shoot best on my first shot (most of the time).
I also shoot better on game than I do stump shooting or target shooting. I guess it’s a matter of complete focus. I also shoot better when I only practice once a week or so.
If I take a long hiatus from target practice, (2-3 weeks), I usually come back shooting better than ever. Can’t explain it except that I’m crazy and the more I shoot, the worse my target panic gets.
in reply to: Low Poundage FOC #63728That’s pretty impressive Jim. Shooting any unfletched arrow requires some great form on your part!
in reply to: SpineDeflection, Wood vs. Carbons #63723The other issue with this is that it depends how the bow is cut. I was shocked to see how different arrows reacted between my (cut past center) black widow to my other recurves (cut to center).
Shooting 200 grains up front, my black widow requires a 28″ 5575, while my other bows of similar draw weight are maxed out at 190 grains up front on a 30″ 3555.
I surely wish it were easier to decide. As Dave said…it gets pricey tuning a new bow.
in reply to: Hang your bows? #62936I doubt a beautiful bow could deserve more than hanging from an old deer rack Bunyan.:D
in reply to: Broad head advice #62928This has been my experience.

I have seen nothing but the best from these heads.
in reply to: Broad head advice #62913I put a simmons tree shark through a broadside buck last year. It went directly through both scapulas and buried 6″ into the ground on the other side of the deer. I posted a picture of that buck and the hole in the shoulder last year. It was sent from a pretty light arrow also. It was a 32″ 3555 arrow with standard carbon insert and 190 grain tree shark from a 1960’s Damon Howatt Monterey at 46lbs.
If I were hunting elk-sized game, I would definitely pick a better penetration head, but because I hunt white-tails, mostly, I would rather shoot a head that does so much damage, on a small animal that can move so quickly. I’ll find the pic of the shoulder shot.
in reply to: Fletching color #62591So far, I’ve used two red barred with white barred cock feather, but my greybark widow was just screaming for all white.
With that bow, I fletch with two solid whites and a white barred. White may not be the best color for all the public land hunting that I do, but they’re easy to see in flight and easy to find on the ground.
in reply to: Your first trad kill… #61810I had killed a few armadillos, squirrels, and a dove when deer season came in.
I had a big doe and large fawn come by me on the second week of the season. I drew without standing and my first arrow went high. I dropped her in her tracks to a spine shot with a 170 gr muzzy. I shot her twice more from the stand and had to finish her off from the ground. It was awful and is one of my most awful hunting memories. I’ll never forgive myself for that kill.
That was the only deer I killed that season.
I’ve since gained confidence and started shooting a more lethal broadhead (tree sharks). Since then, I’ve killed two more deer and a big sow pig. None of them went more than 50 yards.
in reply to: black bear tanning #61803Tanning a black bear is not like tanning a deer hide. It has to be degreased a few times. I don’t exactly know the procedure as I’ve always paid someone to tan my bear hides.
in reply to: Broad head advice #60526Standard insert with 190 grain simmons tree shark. I hear a lot of skepticism about this broadhead…..except from everybody who has ever shot it into an animal.
in reply to: Picking a bow for 2013 hunting #58815The Howatt Hunter would be my choice but you’ve said you prefer longbows so go with what you shoot best. I doubt there’s a bow made that is more forgiving than that Howatt. Love those bows.
