in reply to: A Confession and an Oath #19581Patrick,
I must tell you I have been seriously thinking about your Oath and I am going to try and do the same. I was humbled by your decision. I confess, I must of owned every kind of bow out there, all of the bows have been good to me and the bowyers extremely kind, gracious and understanding.
My hat is off to you for making such a decision and living by it. I do however love to read about the new advancements being made in terms of technology. I can recall reading on another tread, “why change something when it ain’t broke”. Guess there is much to say about that too.
What is so important to me is not what we take for ourselves but how we wish to give it onto others. Your tread gave me the urge to get back to shooting wooden arrows, something that has since then brought a smile to my face.
Thanking you Patrick, Guru and the others awesome folks on this site for your sharing your thoughts, it actually takes alot of courage to do so and for that reason, I for one want to raise my camo ball cap to all of you. 🙂

in reply to: Grizzly tough! #19422I really like Kingwouldbe’s pictures of his hogs and the Grizzly broadheads, yeap, they are a great broadhead. I think the only difficulty these broadheads have had in the past, was the fact that people had a hard time finding the way to get them real sharp. Today, with all of the sharpening tips and treads on how to get them sharp, I know, they will be, and remain one of the top heads in this industry. IMHO of course.

in reply to: For those of you that hunt with wood arrows #19415This is just a thought but it keeps coming back in my mind so I’ll put it out there. Fred bear used to shoot wooden arrows and swithed to fiberglass arrows for dangerous game ( please feel free to correct me on this one ). So perhaps we are doing the same here, switching over to a material that is more convenient with todays bowhunting society.
I myself have been thinking about going back to wooden arrows. I remember anchoring and releasing on a very nice moose a number of years ago and I still remember as of today how I lost sight of the fletching as it did a complete pass through right behind the shoulder.
Hummmm…..somehow, our hearts always seem to lead us back to our ancestors.

in reply to: Ashby on arrow weight — just posted #16710Patrick, the arrow was a carbon shaft and it broke 1 inch behind the insert where you screw the broadhead in the shaft.
As for the type of broadhead used, I think that is what he used. It was a solid 3 blade broadhead with no venting.
Now, I have seen what a two blade does to a moose scapula but I’ve not seen what a three blade would do in that same spot.
Shot placement is so crucial I say but if you put all the chips on your side, perhaps there could have been a different outcome to his hunt.

in reply to: Ashby on arrow weight — just posted #16471Hi David,
I didn’t know if this would be the right place to mention this but I’ll experience what I seen three years ago in Alberta while on a deer hunt. The fella I was hunting with was using a 45 lbs bow, 27″ draw and using high EFOC arrow/broadhead combinations. His shafts must have weighed in at over 700 grains. The only difference with his set up was that he was using a solid 3 piece 300 grain broadhead. One afternoon, as he was returning from his morning hunt, we met on the road that accessed the south portion of the fields and with a long look on his face, he said he had missed a deer. As he was standing still behing a pile of brush, a couple of deer walked by at 12 yards, he shot a buck and said that he seen the arrow hit dead center of the shoulder blade and the arrow broke off right behind the broadhead. This meant very little penetration and a missed deer. After looking all over during that afternoon, no deer was found.
That is where I learned this lesson, even with a EFOC, you still need to consider using the right type broadheads ( 2 blade ) to get the job done right. Now, I don;t know if a two blade would have done the job in those circimstances but that is why I only use two blade broadheads today.
in reply to: Target Panic #15218Patrick, I remember having trouble drawing a low weight recurve…..28 lbs to be exact and reaching my anchor point and holding for more than three seconds. My wife found that hilarious and I know she was amazed at how I could draw and hold a 72 lbs recurve and holding it at my anchor point for quite a long time ( Without an arrow on the bow ). The moment I put an arrow, watch out, there was nothing I could do to pull it back, and when I did, good bye arrow, 4 feet over the target.
Mr. Kidwell was really instrumental in helping me through every step, while being so positive and patient. Today, I am thankful and so ever greatful.
