in reply to: Squirrel State #12418
Squirrel season here in Ga starts August 15 and runs through Feb 28th. Bag limit is 12 a day grey or fox.
Fox Squirrels aren’t near as plentiful. They prefer mature pine forest over deciduous forest. If you find a fox squirrel, you’ll find out they’re pretty “dumb” compared to a grey, and much easier to kill.
I honestly wish the limit was lower for fox squirrels.
in reply to: Safety Glasses #12404Never thought about it. I could never wear any sort of glasses shooting a bow.

I am wondering how that affects compound bows, or even crossbows. Do you have any idea why they do this? Seems if they single out traditional gear, there is some reason. Interesting piece of information. Be well.

I’ve deer hunted for years in Illinois with a compound and you don’t “unstring” the compound. You have to put a lock around the cables and the string to keep the string from being pulled back..
I will say, hunting with trad equipment is much nicer up there. I’d rather unstring my recurve and re-string it, than put that dang masterlock around my bow…

I’m sorry for comming across that way. Of course if there is no other alternatives, carbons would be the way to go. I think what I’m really trying to say is I always wished that more companies invested the time and effort in producing wood arrows that could stand up to carbons. Hope that’s clear as mud. Kevin:oops:
It’s okay. I was still going to go home and shoot my carbons anyway.
LOL!!!

I had long since thought that feral hogs were considered a game animal in CA. At least that’s the impression I got from that horrible show about game wardens.
I loved it when that brilliant Cali Warden gave the verbal lashing to the baiting bear hunter about how his bait site could spread EHD to the local deer population by the saliva on the bait………………………………….
Wow…
in reply to: Cottontails! #52054I was stumping the other day around my yard when….a very plump cottontail emerged from the wood line 20yds from me……..
It’s not rabbit season here in Ga unfortunately………..
I employed my “whistling” technique and was able to creep up to 10yds of the rabbit……
I was tempted….very, very tempted………But… older age and maybe a touch more wisdom floating around upstairs won out, and the cottontail hopped off unscathed..

in reply to: How far will you shoot? #27746ShaneHarley wrote: I’m kind of asking from something I seen on another thread but how far is the maximum yardage your willing to shoot at say a deer. Obviously practice has something to do with it but maybe you feel comfortable shooting 30 yards but will shoot at nothing past 20 in a hunting situation? I’m just curious what everyones thoughts were on this. Thanks
I take 70yd shots in my backyard at pine cones, water bottles, targets etc..
I won’t shoot past 20yds in a hunting situation.
in reply to: Longbow Turkey #27740Congrats again Joe!!!
I haven’t been on here in a while!!
Heck of an accomplishment!!!!!
Maybe one of these days I’ll get the cojones to leave the Benelli at home and take the recurve with me to the turkey woods!:D

in reply to: Deer sent and Human urin #29237mhay wrote: Well, having been downwind of a baby in a wet diaper ,,,,and knowing how rank a rutting buck smells ,,,,I DISAGREE . I have read of hunters who claim they wizz right from the treestand with no ill effects on the hunt. I don’t practice what they preach.
Best approach in my opinion is to LEAVE all human scent OUTSIDE the areas of stands , blinds and so forth.
I let fly too from the stand.:D And I’ve watched deer directly below me sniffing the wet leaves, standing in it, and casually wagging their tails, and going about their business.
I don’t purposely pee all over the woods, but when I have to go, I have to go, and I’m not keen on carrying a bottle of my own urine on my person…LOL! I’ve shot enough deer over the years, and seen enough reactions to my urine to come to the conclusion that it doesn’t bother them.

It’s pretty amazing the difference in speed between a 28″ 5575 and a 32″7595. It’s a lot slower now, but it’s also much quieter and penetrates deeper into the target. In the long run, they’ll be better for hunting. I don’t see myself shooting past 15 yards anyway so the difference in speed is negligible.
I figured with this setup, I could always take on much bigger game too and some of the bears we’ll be after in september could be up to 600lbs.
Sounds like a great setup!
