in reply to: Tuning wood shafts #10277
A reaply back about the wood I use and how get it. I have a big advantage becouse we are in the heart of some of the best old growth timber there can be found. I have cousins that have a family owned saw mill. And they get lots of premium wood in.I dont know how much it would cost to ship you some.
The vg bamboo I cant tell becouse I am going to try to market that and my supplyer is a little unstable. If you are more interested we can talk more.
in reply to: what do your arrows cost? #10260I dont think much on the cost of arrows, for one the better quality they are the longer they last, for stump shooting hunting, and target shooting. I use a few diffrent arrow shafts only wood for me. Douglas fir which is a good all around strong shaft in my books lots better than ceder, The better is eather western larch or vg bamboo, I make all my arrows so that helps, today i machined out 1300 fir and spruce arrows
in reply to: How many bows do you have? #10249I didnt know I was the only traditional archery addict out there, I have 2 recurves and 5 long bows from strait limbs to mild reflex deflex, and pronounced reflex deflex. Seems I get a comfortable with the amount of bows I have someone wants to buy them from me. I have more glass orderd up to build 1 more recurve and 2 more long bows. Its an addiction and I cant stop.Today I just machined out 1300 pruce and douglas fir arrows to sell thats lots of fun to
Take on the chalenge go traditional
in reply to: where are the heavier bows at??? #9217I think its interesting how that everyone wants a 45-50 lb bow weather its a recurve or long bow, for hunting or for just shooting. I shoot what I call the Quick stick its a reflex deflex long bow 64″ 60 lbs and also a 72lbs reflex deflex. built by myself. I fill more at ease with a more lb pull on my bow and a heaver arrow when hunting. I have shot lots of diffrent bows and if you havnt shot lots and you go to start out traditional you better start with a lighter bow and work up.
in reply to: Tuning wood shafts #9207I have built lots of my own shafts out of Douglas fir, spruce
and western larch, and out of vg bamboo. the last 2 are what I have found to be the best and the strongest. Its lots of fun and a chalenge. I have one of those veritas arrow makers wear you spin a half inch square wood stock threw it with a fast drill gun. Make shr you get strait grain wood for best performance. I am looking to sell my arrow maker becouse I am making arrows in bigger quanitys. In all 4 types.
I will be back if any want to know more info on how the veritas arrow maker works.

in reply to: shaft making #9195Hello yes I have one of them veritas arrow makers with the 11/32 insert. I have made 100-200 arrows with it sold some on ebay and to other friends, and have made and sold lots of arrows with it. There are some wood it doesnt work as well with like cedar, some of the soft woods not so well what it does is cut a ruff cut on half of the shaft. Douglas fir and other little harder woods it works good in. I am looking to sell it because I am setting up to do big quanitys of arrows in Douglas fir, spruce, and western larch, and vg bamboo.
Any more questions I will be back

I shoot recurves and long bows every day, I like a good shooting long bow better than a recurve, I wont go into that rite now. The long bow has 2-3 diffrent styles with most bowers. The D style strait limb is known for its hand shock, and stack up. If the bow is built rite these problems are veary minimal. The other style is the reflex-deflex long bow which most the time is better on these known problems.
To get a bow that shoots smooth and quiet, and fast is sometime hard to get all. If the bower knows what he is doing he can produce a bow that is a party to shoot, I have men come to me and want A higher Lbs pull bow,And they try one for a few days they come back wanting less Lbs.50 lb is plenty for most applications. Buying a bow with some of these negatives can discourage a good archer.
