in reply to: The ugliest moccasins ever! #41036
Hey Chris- Those are the UGLIEST looking mocs I’ve ever seen! Have you decided to change your major to ‘seamstress’? of the Frankenstein model of sewing or perhaps, with the evidence before me, a career in plastic surgery is not out of the question!
They’re so ugly they are cool, Chris- nice job! Let us know how that first jagged rock and/or thorn feels as it slides into your cold, wet foot as you toboggan down the muddy trail. Don’t forget to bring some real shoes with you as you venture forth!
What’s next from your fertile imagination?- a possum skin breechcloth or loincloth made from tanned catfish skin? We await with bated breath your next project!
Don’t let the deer hair tickle your instep!-Bertin reply to: Teaching the Principals of FoC (to my son) #41014Actually throwing an arrow is not a new sport, it’s older than archery with a bow- check out an ‘atlatl’- though technically they throw a ‘dart’ it’s nothing but an oversized arrow or undersized spear depending on your take on the subject.
Perhaps for the treestander guys, you could just wait until the deer is directly under you, then leap, screaming, with arrow in hand to fatally pierce your intended prey.
Remember to wear a cup!- the consequences of not doing so are aptly remembered in your youth when your foot slipped off the pedal of your first bike- now why in the hell do boy’s bikes have an unforgiving piece of steel exactly in the wrong place to crush the, excuse me ladies, ‘tender jewels of procreation’? Must be a conspiracy theory that should be exposed for all its evil intent!
I’m on it-Bertin reply to: Sitka deer in Maryland/delmarva?!?!? #40994Dear Snakeeater et al- Sitka deer are a subspecies of mule and blacktail deer, specifically ‘Odocoileus hemionus sitkensis’ found in British Columbia, Canada and Alaska and not here in the traditional PNW of Washington and Oregon- be great to import them though, especially if they are ‘dumber’ so I could finally score!
How do you track an arrowed Sika deer in a swamp is what I’d like to know. And then what you do?
Best- Bertin reply to: IS EVERYONE READY FOR TURKEY HUNTING? #40970You guys are lucky- the only turkeys here in western Washington are politicians and there’s no open season on them-yet!
Love the cover painting on TBM where the Indian-sorry,First Nation- individual is laying his hand on the old bowhunter’s shoulder, implying ‘No shoot there! (Insert country and/or people) brain shot! Wait til bird turn sideways- then shoot!’
Any of you guys using the radical and very weird ‘guillotine’ broadheads for headshots- just gotta love American innovation!- And where do you shoot a turkey anyway?
If Ben Franklin had his way on our national bird icon, would we be eating eagles for Thanksgiving?
Just some random thoughts from a random mind!
Gobble, gobble, gobble-Bertin reply to: BOW ARM TECHNIQUE QUESTION #40949Hello and welcome NV- Locking any part of your body is a bad thing! Compounders, because of their equipment set-up, tend to stand at 90 degrees to the target while trad guys and gals have a more open stance and cant the bow more or less, depending on your physique, from the vertical.
By all means get some manuals on form- T.J.Conrads, Byron Ferguson, Brian Sorrells and my favorite on the physical aspects, Anthony Camera’s ‘Shooting the Stickbow’, who goes into very detailed muscle and tendon groups and their role in drawing, holding and releasing an arrow in a disciplined relaxed, consistent manner. And there are some good DVD’s out there that perhaps some others on this forum could recommend.
Remember, when you perfect your release, you will have accomplished what no archer in history has done!
So concentrate on correct form until it is ‘natural’, as in any physical activity, and then you can focus on making your arrow hit where you want- well at least, most of the time- now why in the hell did that arrow go there!
Good shooting-Bertin reply to: New to archery #37206Jmed
No disrespect given- we’re just a bunch of old opinionated curmudgeons, esp. me! Though some of the younger guys seem to be gettin’ a little tetchy too- must be contagious.
The important thing is to get a bow, any bow in your price range and the basic equipment and practice, practice, practice.
If you’re looking for a one-piece recurve in the 45-50# range, rmsgear has about 9 used in the 100 to 235 govt. IOU range and one really cherry Bear, with sticker still on it, for $300. If you want to try a longbow, Mike McCredy over at Maddog Archery makes a Mutt from leftover pieces of his more expensive bows for 225. And there are many other venues as the guys have indicated.
I really have no opinion on the Samick except to note from some other forums, some like ’em and some don’t- but the South Koreans are avid archers and bowyers as witness their wins in the Olympics- hell, the formal practice target is 145 meters downfield!
So, good luck on your quest and let us know what you got and how we can help in anyway- there’s a wealth of knowledge on this site, and we’ll try- oh this is going to be hard!-to be a little more less gruff- must have been the ‘National Day of Dependence’ yesterday shenanigans that set some of us, the enlightened ones, off! And there I go again, as the Gipper was fond of quipping!
Best-Bertin reply to: Backpack Hunting Questions #36041Ray- That is one very D..E..A..D looking and huge bear- nice shot! The mountains pictured not only look like goat country but look like you could certainly use a helicopter- hey, Byron Ferguson luckily had one nearby(film crew) to haul out a humongous moose from some swamp in Canada. Any trad pilots in the PNW?
Good shooting-Bertin reply to: New to archery #36030Hey guys- just received this shocking message from China!
Attention American capitalist pigs. This last chopstick on panda’s back. We no Commie-You Commie. How you like flipflop on other foot now?
You no respect our volunteer prisoners hard work making crappy traditional bows. All get treated as humans- one bowl (small) of rice aday and all air can breathe- at least have jobs not like you lazy once-capitalist pigs.
Not true contain lead- don’t let stupid children and MREs(dogs) chew them.
You no buy crappy Chinese bows, we want money back. Now. Broke? No yuan? We take Kalifornia and blondes and Dizzyland- now what do with 899 billion left? Hmmm? Buy your Congress and Government? No. Have enough thieves here.
You buy crappy Chinese bows because Confucius say-‘Chinese people happy, American people happy. Chinese people sad, American people up crap creek without paddle.’ That all.
Mao Zedung- President Society Harmony International Trading LLC
P.S. You have poached bear gallbladders and paws? Will trade for crappy Chinese traditional bows.
Well, that was certainly an unexpected and threatening message- I guess my response would be the old two word phrase-BUY AMERICAN!
Bertin reply to: Michigan "Meatout Day" #32338PEOPLE OF MICHIGAN- RISE UP!
May a million barbecues be lit Saturday and the tantalizing, fragrant odor of burning animal flesh waft deeply into the idiot minds who illconcieved this disaster.
I will give up my hamburger when they pry it from my cold dead fingers!GO BACK TO CANADA, MS. GRANHOLM- AND EAT TOFU!!!
From Washington State, where we have our own Idiot-in-Chief.
in reply to: Please introduce yourselves, I'll start #30199Welcome Huntsman! And sincere thanks for your service in the Rockpile- otherwise know as another crappy third-world hellhole. Probably not alot of bowhunting opportunities what with avoiding IED’s and exploding Taliban, so stay safe over there, come home and share some Alberta hunting stories with us.
From an old curmudgeon Yank from the PNW-Good shooting!-Bert
P.S.-Hey, I was even happy the Canucks won the gold in hockey in Vancouver- didn’t want to hear the sobs and gnashing of teeth over the border here in Washington State!in reply to: Backpack Hunting Questions #25828Welcome to the site, Mike Mitten! It’s all Dave’s fault, isn’t it?
You stated”…SIMPLY cutting the big bucks in half and SIMPLY putting on a pack frame and carry out each 100 POUND half.” Emphasis mine. I’m 5’10” and 150lbs dripping wet, with heavy boots, so I would seriously be blowing wind with a load like that. Being sixty probably doesn’t help, along with a life’s accumulation of bad habits! Fortunately, the blacktails around here in the PNW are rather dainty compared to those Midwest giants so, when, God willing, I manage to harvest one this year we’ll see how she goes. Thanks for the tips guys.
There was a fellow I met years ago, from Colorado I think, the most natural strong guy- slapping his back was like hitting concrete!(most big guys are mellow-don’t have anything to prove- unless they’re Samoan!).He was a bowhunter and Grizzly’s were his totem animal and so one spring he’s out scouting, sees a bear casually, with one paw
lift up a huge boulder, peer underneath for something tasty. Finding nothing, Old Ephraim moved on while this fellow goes over to the boulder, squats down, hands underneath and with all his tremendous strength, heaves- and can’t even budge, much less lift, this huge rock! Said it gave him a hands-on appreciation of a Grizzly’s inate strength!
Thanks for the post, Mike and look forward to more- going to have to get your book and DVD ASAP.
Best- Bertin reply to: Wood Arrow Build Along "Finished" #25802Dude- Thanks for all the info and sharing your obvious skills- it inspires us gifted- and not so gifted- amateurs to a higher level of aesthetics. Life is too short to shoot ugly arrows! Especially liked the camouflage burn job and have done it to a couple of rifle stocks. WhisperingWind arrows uses Daly’s Profin as a sealer(3 coat) and I can vouch for its durability and easy flow- the Korean bamboo arrow makers rub a coat of carwax over their lacquer finish.
Though I’ve mostly fletched with parabolics, I’m really liking the looks(if marginally less efficient) of the shield cut- just adds a touch of traditional class to woodies.
They look too beautiful to shoot- but shoot they will I imagine!
Keep your bare fingers off the hot points!- Bertin reply to: Beaver fur silencers for life!!! #25703Get a copy of Rick Black’s, ‘Wild Game- chilis, soups, and stews’- great recipes for everything that walks, flies or swims- plus his stories are an absolute hoot! He’s got 6 recipes for beaver- and basic prep is remove(carefully) the scent glands between the forelegs, under the thighs and along the small of the back. Strip off all the fat as it’s very strong, then cover with water, bring to a boil, adding 1 tablespoon each baking soda and black pepper. Simmer for 20 minutes, drain and add to your soups and stews.
Good eatin’!- Bertin reply to: Backpack Hunting Questions #24965What a great photo! What a monster! Query- is he carting both deer over to a more convenient field-dressing location?! Man, if you break a leg in the boonies, that’s the guy you want as your hunting partner- probably just stick you on top of the deer!
in reply to: Beaver fur silencers for life!!! #24736Nice looking critter, Chris. Cari-Bow is selling beaver handgrips for 25 bucks a pop- they sure make a good looking grip, though. I think you should make an old time trapper hat with the rest of the hide- and then attend your local PETA meeting!!- Bert
