in reply to: NEW STRING? #18514

I’m with reserve the old one and get a new string. Just received a gorgeous D-97 4 color(red, yellow, brown &black) 8-strand with B-50 padded loops from SBD Bow Strings out of Dunlevy, PA- highly recommend them. Tho it does look like multi-colored dental floss compared with the original 14 strand dacron! Stuck a couple of string leeches at the quarter points and it’s Silent But Deadly!

How did the buck get that giant Starbucks coffee cup between his tines? Maybe he was getting ready for Halloween as any creature seeing that glowing white eye eerily moving in the dark would still be running- know I would! Watch out it’s a HAINT! All that’s needed is a white sheet- bet he didn’t have much luck with the does or trouble with rival bucks and the cougar that was stalking him was last seen streaking towards Canada like the hounds of hell were on his heels!
Nice pic- what do you guys think of trail cams? No experience here-pros?-cons?
P.S. It’s really an islamist jihad deer from Afghanistan with an attached IED!- pray for our troops especially our snipers( seen on the back of a SUV recently- a sentiment I heartily endorse).

in reply to: Tamarack Shafts? #17426

SteveMcd- Doesn’t look like tamarack would make a good shafting material- you might try over on your side of the continent- Allegheny Mountain Arrow Woods
            P.O.Box 582
            Coudersport, PA 16915
            (814)-274-2282 http://www.arrowwoods.com
They list- laminated birch,Doug fir,POC,purpleheart, hickory along with maple, yellow birch, poplar, and cherry on a limited basis for shafting. Prices look fair too. Sure they could give you a hand or the “shaft” as it were!
            Best from the soggy PNW-Bert

in reply to: Im No Deerhunter #17416

Steve J- I confess I have the same problem though I don’t have ADD- acouple hours sitting, hopefully a warm sun then the eyelids droop-perhaps a little nap is indicated! Maybe that’s why it’s strongly recommended to harness up in a tree stand so you don’t wake up with the jolting, startle reflex as your body hits the ground!
So spot and stalk- David Peterson& G. Fred Asbell have excellent articles and books on the technique. Slow and slower- Get the best binocs you can afford, pan the area, search thoroughly thru any gaps and holes, always aware of the wind. Perchance you’ll spot that little tail movement- then the fun begins! But at least you’re involved and won’t get bored-whether you get a deer or not- well that’s why it’s called HUNTING not GETTING! Duncan has good advice too.

StandingBear-Yah-Taa-Hey brother archer, you’re most welcome. ‘Tis always good to be able to resurect a good bow. I had a forlorn 68″ “Ol Ben” Pearson longbow that sat neglected for years as it was over 70#- the first time I attempted to draw it in my younger, stronger more stupid youth, the string ripped my left sweatshirt sleeve off then gave me a mighty thwack on my unprotected forearm. I learned what “overbowed” meant!
Glad to say it now resides in good hands as I sent it to Dr. Ed Ashby in El Paso, Texas who because of his recent illness left all his kit in New Zealand. He was worried about losing his hardwon archery muscles- happened to call just as the bow arrived- he strung her up and pulled 5x left and right! Guess he’s alright in that aspect. Pray for his recovery as I told him his work was not finished!
                Good Shooting and stay warm-Bert

StandingBear- Found the article on straightening limbs in the Oct/Nov 2009 Traditional Bowhunter- pg 69 by Jason R. Wesbrock- looks like hot water from the sink. Or just trade it in for a longbow! As to strings, I just received a gorgeous 8 strand D-97 for my 50# longbow from SBD Bow Strings out of Dunlevy, Pennsylvania- just need your kind of bow and AMO( which should be written somewhere on limbs) or hook your string loop over a nail and measure from inside of loop-to-loop-Luck!

Pulling a new PSE “Sequoia” r/d 68inch 50#@28″ longbow-good bow for the price-$250. It’s FF compatible so I replaced the 14 strand B-50 flemish with an 8 strand 4 color
D-97 with padded loops from SBD Bowstrings on O.L. Adcock’s advice. Great string from an ethical company- tho it looks like it’s strung with a multicolored piece of dental floss!
Still have the old Bear Whitetail 11 that I converted to shoot-off-the-shelf- use as my portable nautilus machine
Had a 68″ Ben Pearson “Ol Ben” longbow that was over 70# and way over-bowed for me so I recently gifted it to Dr. Ed Ashby as he was worried about losing his bow muscles during his illness- called him just as he was opening the box- he pulled 5x right side and the same left!
In the market for takedown longbow in the future- how do like that Pacific Yew rayborbon?- Jay St. Charles’ co. is just down the road from me.

Ray- Brilliant solution with minimal material- they definitely need your American mind and expertise in Washington DC! And it’s GREEN!-in more ways then one- have you contacted Cabelas yet- there’s got to be some way you can complicate it up- make it “sexier” and more expensive for the wheelies!
Out to the shop to make one- hope the rain stops up here in soggyland as tomorrow is late season archery for those elusive blacktail- I wish all PNW archers luck and

Another excellent resource and one I can’t recommend too much, is Anthony Camera’s ” Shooting the Stickbow- A Practical Approach to Classical Archery”. Not a hunting book but 380 pages of encyclopedic knowledge of everything else archery- for beginners to old salts. An essay about the pioneer Earl Hoyt and photos, care and restoration of his wonderful collection of early Bear and Hoyt recurves.
Hey, we have to something this miserable winter- sheets of water incessantly pouring down here in the PNW for the past week- and so pick up some good books and make some arrows!

As the only haole( white guy) you’ll ever meet that picked pineapples on Lanai( a miserable job!) as I took a hike in the rugged interior one day, coming around a cliff, there stood a pronghorn antelope! Could have knocked me over with a feather.
If you get bored with bowhunting you can always get a guide with dogs and go pig hunting- with a large bowie knife! Hear it’s quite exhilarating- if you survive unscathed or “untusked” as it were. As the Bard states, they will ” unzip you from your gaggle to your zatch”.
Have fun and good hunting-Aloha, Bert
P.S. You might want to take gander at Kingwouldbe’s excellent pics of his porkers- a BOWIE KNIFE? Are you CRAZY?! or just suicidal!!!!

BRUC, don’t be sad or apologetic about using a compound bow on this forum- check out Konrad’s posts. You won’t find a less judgemental group of guys and gals- we’re all archers at heart and tend to focus more on the arrow than on the launcher, on ethical hunting and sharing stories and info.
I have an old Bear Whitetail 11 compound that re-started my passion for bows- I call it my portable-nautilus-machine as the draw weight can be easily adjusted down to 35# to get those deep back muscles in shape. Currently I’m pulling a 50# 68inch PSE “Sequoia” longbow- for a relatively cheap (250 bucks) bow it works great.
Got to get ready as late season archery deer opens here in the PNW tomorrow and I get to amble bow and arrows in hand after the elusive black-tail- just hope and pray it stops raining. Who knows, I might find the longbow too civilized and revert back to an atlatl and sling!

Kingwouldbe- We have just elected you to be the Dr. Ed Ashby of hog hunting and equipment experimentation- great pics esp. that one which looks to be the size of an M-1 tank! Went to highschool in Santa Maria, Ca.- do you hunt around the Paso Robles area?
GTA- I would have you peer intently on the tusks of these various porkers- guaranteed to rip you from, as the Bard said,”your gaggle to your zatch”-ouch! Highly recommend for your edification, John “Pondoro” Taylor’s “African Rifles & Cartridges”, a great tome of actual hunting ballistics of the big boys. Tho he highly esteemed the various large bores for dangerous game, he also stated, ” I would happily undertake to walk thru from Cape Town to Cairo armed with nothing but a scope-sighted .22 Rim-Fire and a powerful hand gun, and I am quite confident I would not go hungry.”

By all means, check out the Dr. Ashby leathality studies- most of us are busy experimenting with EFOC on our missiles- anybody have a source for depleted uranium!? Snuffy-HalfaHun because I’m half-hungarian on my father’s side of the genome and the other half because I pull a 50# longbow-i.e. one-half a hundred! Although a Christian by choice lately the Attila the Hun side has somewhat more influence due to the perilous and dismal times we find ourselves imbroiled in- but they’ll have to pry my “assault” bow from my cold dead fingers! After the various rifles, shotguns, muzzleloaders and handguns!
The Mongols were Masters of the Bow too, along with a few thousand Englishmen at Agincourt, Crecy and Poitiers-LONG LIVE THE BOW!and God’s grace to the archers that pull them.
