At the PBS Gathering in Nashville, several experienced women held a seminar for women in bowhunting, which was very well attended. Lots of great topics came up and many excellent suggestions were made that helped me and I’m sure many of the women who attended.

This forum is an extension of that question and answer session. We have a great group of folks who are eager to help anyone with a question or an issue that pertains to women getting involved in hunting or outdoor activities.

Women are welcome to participate in all the forums on this site, and all members (men included) are welcome here to help with suggestions. Have fun and make some bowhunting friends!

Dear Ms. Admin — In any event I think this is a great idea. But unless you state so clearly, men (like me, already) will post here. I see it both ways: As you say women are more than welcome to post anywhere here, so we could say that it would be sexist to block men from this new forum. BUT, if it’s for women to talk with one another about archery and bowhunting topics, perhaps it should be for women only unless the author of the thread requests male input? Just asking for clarification. 🙄 Snuffs

Well so far we have 4 of us girls: Snuffy, Pat, Ray and ol’ Bloodless! 🙄 Maybe we should start by discussing the cooking tip of the week? 😀

I would never dream of excluding anyone from any forum. Some of the topics may include finding hunting clothes made for women, setting up treestands and/or alternatives, or exercises to build up to hunting weight bows. All of these topics are open discussion for both men and women. I feel that sometimes instruction sounds better from a stranger than your own spouse .

Some of this may become better defined as we grow. I agree with Ray, there are not enough women archers. We are just providing a place where they can connect with other like-minded people and maybe get some instruction and encouragement. No teasing please (Patrick 😆 ).

An email is going out to the girls soon. They will start filtering in soon. 😉 And I love a man who can cook a mean sourdough pancake!

Next spring I am getting my daughter into archery. I’ll be making her a yew or vine maple self bow.

Getting women engaged and proud of being archers is important. I have been lucky enough to assist with some bowcrafting instruction locally. My friend is a bowmaker and he takes in classes of middle school children in and we go over how to tiller and finish a bow from a roughed out form. Just a week or so ago we had 30 kids in one day. I spent a lot of time on the tillering tree. The groups was about half female and I can only hope that some of those will take a long term interest in archery. That was the largest group we had done. Last year we did smaller groups of about a dozen or so. I think we hit darn near maximum. Overall I believe that people are more closely connected with bows that they have taken a part in creating. Meaning this sort of activity seems to connect people closer to traditional archery rather than modern compounds. Go girls.

By the way, I have my daughters recurve ready, just need a new string. The limbs were twisted, but thanks to Jason Wesbrock’s tip, I straightened them out. Was very simple, and suprisingly only took a few minutes.

                              To Rayborbon;
Your endeavors of teaching young people how to build bows is a fabulous undertaking. In Killarney our local Wildlife Association has a “Sportsman of the Year Award”. This awards is given to an individual who does lots to promote hunting and good sportsmanship with youth. If you lived here you would be the UNANIMOUS WINNER. It is inspiring to know that we have people like you willing to give up their own recreation and hunting time to premote the hunting sports with youth. My hat goes off to you:!:

                                Hello Everyone!
Wow! Now that I know how to post on here…there is no guarantee that I will shut up…:D

Thank you Robin for putting this together for us! I am excited to see where this could go and of course I think it is GREAT that there are guys that are willing to be helpful!

The seminar was a great start for women to start exchanging ideas and I personally learned quite a bit myself.

So as a starter…I have a question to get things going..
At the end of June I am going to Quebec to hunt bear. This is my 3rd time hunting bear, my second in Quebec. As everyone knows…the black flies and mosquitoes are awful this time of the year. Are there any good suggestions to make the hunt a little more comfortable? Any opinions on therma-cell? A scent free repellent? Head Nets? My first time there, I was so distracted that it took away from the hunt, so any advice is GREATLY appreciated!

                                  Amy,
Best suggestion is to go somewhere without black flies. You need to learn to “help” decide where to go to hunt. You have lots of choices, like a spring turkey hunt, or hunt bears where there isn’t black flies, or go to AFRICA!!! (just to name a few) And there are LOTS of ways to “help” decide where to go. (I’m sure you know what I mean!) Personally, I don’t like to hunt in the bitter cold. I DON’T GO when it’s really cold. Keeps it fun for ME!
                                  Best of luck!
                                  Belinda

I have hunted bear in Quebec with and without the thermacell. It definitely makes sitting in a stand easier.

But don’t forget the head net and gloves. Tape your pants to your boots. Tape your gloves to your sleeves.

I use a net I bought in Quebec. You can’t get it in the states. It has the shirt and head net built together. Costs about 25 dollars and is available in all the sporting good stores up there.

You can’t bring the fuel canisters with you on the airplane. You will need to buy them in canada. Go to Canadian Tire and look in the hair curler section. The same butane cartridges used for cordless hair curlers works for the thermacell, and is a lot cheaper.

                                    Good luck!

First let me say a BIG THANKS TO ROBIN!!!!!:lol:

I have hunted Canada alot and the bugs are not so bad in fall season,I like the thermacell, some things that help is about 2wks.before leaving start takeing Brewer’s Yeast and Garlic read lables to make sure you can uae Brewer’s Yeast and because I am a finger shoter and I don’t like gloves I wear surgical gloves the bugs can’t bite throug them.If you wear anything over your face you will need to pratist with it on.I have stoped wearing anything on my face,it has messed up my shot so I use a repelent.

I also love the ThermaCell but Steve beat me to the tip about buying curling iron cartridges. Oh, and don’t forget to turn it off when you are done! 😆 I forget it is running and the next time I want it it’s dead. 😥

Robin: REALLY??? Bananas??? I had not heard that…hmmm…the things you can learn from fellow bowhunters…

Belinda: Thanks for the tip and Africa is definitely on the bucket list. Hopefully sooner rather than later. Quebec is a beautiful place to hunt and the last I knew…Africa was a little short on Black Bears!

Well I will stop eating Bananas 2 weeks before we leave. I will have Therma Cell in hand. I will try the brewers yeast and I plan on using the repellent that the local guys at camp use. If this all does not help…well…I will grin and bear it…then complain back at camp!

I have spoken with many of you this past week and I am really happy to see that you guys enjoyed the seminar in Nashville as much as we did. We are in the process of planning the All Woman Hunt that we discussed. Right now we are in the process of looking for possible properties. Our goal is to find something reasonably priced with a high success ratio. If you have any thoughts, would like to help plan or if you are just interested in attending, let us know.

                                          Again, Thanks!!!

Africa was only a suggestion of a place to hunt with no black flies. (They do have other things with big teeth and big claws.) If you want to hunt bears, I saw a lot of nice bears in Colorado while I was turkey hunting and no black flies there either! Location, Location, Location!!!

I like seeing more and more women get involved in archery. I watched the Real History of Robin Hood the other night and I thought it was really cool that some of the stories of Maid Marian, she actually turned out to be a better archer than ol RH. I got my wife a recurve a few years back and she finally pulled it out and shot it on a camping trip last summer. She loved it, except for the arm slap that occurred! Ouch… I really enjoyed watching her shoot and I can’t wait to see her do more of it. Way to go ladies…

There are lot’s of women bowhunters, the problem is separrating them from the men.I shoot a lot of compitions and it is hard to get a group of women together and go to the range without their spouce’s.This weekend at the NC State shoot a couple of the ladines and I have started working on a plan for an all womens event,we are going to start with sending out questionnaires to see how much intrest we would have.It will proble be bowfishing on the coast, shooting clinics and other things for women to learn, treestands, understanding your equipment send email add.

Love all the support on here for the women of this sport! Unfortunately, there are not a lot of us women bowhunters. I agree, the more women hunt the more our youth will. I personally think more women would bowhunt if they had the opportunity to try. I myself, had no idea I could do it (let alone traditional) until someone put the bow in my hand.

I am headed to Quebec on Friday. Wish me luck. This will be my third bear hunt and I would really like to be successful this time :lol:

We are still looking for a sites for the women’s bowhunt so if there are any ideas out there…hop over to the thread about it and let us know!
