I have a Kodiak Magnum 50th anniversary recurve that is 50″ when it should be 52 amo. The string that came with it is 50″ and the brace height is only 4 1/2″ when it should be 7″-8″. I need a Replacement string and online it says that i should order 48″ string. I’m wondering if i should order a 46″ string since my Kodiak is only 50″. I’m hoping that getting an 46″ string will bring the brace height up to 7″-8″. Is this the right thing to do? -Robbie

      Robbie,

Your string may need to be adjusted, unstring the bow, remove the bottom limb string loop, holding the loop, twist the string the same direction the serving is wrapped (normally clockwise, hope I don’t have that backwards) about 4 full turns per 1/2″ of brace height. Every bow and string is a bit different so you will have to use trial and error to get the correct brace height. To determine the direction the serving is wrapped hold to bow strait up and down and look at the wrap of the serving from top toward the bottom.

Now all this only works if the string is in good condition. It maybe that the string has reach the end of its useful life and has already been twisted more than it should be for safe use.

If you don’t know how to tell and don’t have anyone around that can advise you, for safety’s sake, I highly recommend that you take the bow to a pro shop and have them check it for you.

There are a lot more folks here that have more experience that I do and they my be able to explain it better than I did and help more.

      Good luck

      Troy

Robbie, Troy is pretty much right on. The string length is different for a longbow or recurve. I’ve found that (for me) 5 twists of the string is equal to 1/2″ though. Your twists might vary too! πŸ™‚ Horserod

Are you absolutely positive that your K-Mag is 50″? It just seems a little odd, because I was under the impression that the Anniversary model was only made in 52″ but I could be wrong. Did you measure it strung, or unstrung?

Thank you all vary much! I twisted the bowstring the way you said and got my brace height to 7″. I’m seeing no problem with the bow or string after a few shooting sessions. Thank you everyone for your guidance! πŸ˜€

I have an older (70’s model) K-mag, and love it. I have it tuned to shoot the same arrows as my Grizzly, and really enjoy the short bow for maneuverability. Now I just need to get another shelf cover and strike plate. LOL!!
