I’ve been thinking of doing a post about how I sharpen the Grizzly El Grandy and the 160.

I tried to make some videos and lost part of the middle one, so I’m just going to explain it.

I get pm’s every week, from guy’s asking me how I get my broadheads sharp, so, I hope this helps.

When I switched to Grizzlys about 10 years ago, I was not use to single bevels, and it was hard to get a good edge, I have sense perfected my sharpening to have a true single bevel razor’s edge .

You can see the new bevel on this one.

#1 You must use a great file, when I first started to try and sharpen the Grizzly, I was using the same file I used for my Zwickey and I had a really hard time getting the new bevel to get all the way to the flat side, it took forever.

I mount my file to a board so it wont move and I can keep a consistent angle.

        Tools I use:
        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4t3cI3gt7Fg

#2 You must get the new bevel all the way to the flat side ( I can not over emphasize this ) keep moving the new bevel until you have a good wire edge all the way from the tip to the end, you can feel this with your finger nail, it should be clear it’s there, if you can’t feel it, it’s not there.

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TW7vWOnGY0c
#3 Now I true up the flat side ( you can do this first if you want ) I lay the head on the flat side and slide it forward until it’s flat, ( two spots to keep track of is the end and the tip)there can be a ridge on the end and extra braising from the laminating on the tip.

#4 Now the wire edge should be vary obvious, I switch to a mill file to smooth out any ruff cuts the curved tooth file may have made, this takes off vary little steel.
Now I go to an extra fine stone ( mine is 1200 grit diamond stone ) I polish the bevel side ( emphasizing the polishing of the edge ) this will push the wire edge back to the flat side, then I flip it over to the flat side and do the same thing, all I am doing now is polishing the edge, underneath this polished wire edge is your razors edge.

#5 Now I go to my leather strop, this will cause the wire to jump off of the head, ( some times there will be spots that don’t want to come off, just go back to your fine stone and do some more polishing, then back to the strop )you can see the wire is just barely hanging on, a few more strokes on the strop and it’s there.

#6 I do my tonto tip on the beveled side, making a true cut on contact front end that is the strongest tip ever, ( I like the tonto on the bevel side to start the twist immediately upon contact )

I bought a case of these files and have some extras if you want one, $25 shipped just PM or email me at: ru4jesusnow@sbcglobal.net

There is no magic, just things you must do, if you don’t do them, your just chasing your tail

Thanks, David. Important info well explained and the photos really help. Sharpster — anything to add? David, how in the world did you arrive at your super complex shaft/weight forward setup? Seems I recall you buying a zillion shafts years ago on a hot deal and having to adapt? Obviously it works, given your success! I”m taking the morning off hunting to take the wife to the doc (as a hermit, she can drive but rarely does and prefers not to). Back out there early afternoon as I’ve found a watering spot they visit in mid-afternoon and the wind is good. Cheers, dave

Hey Dave, your right about having a lot of these super skinny shafts, I think I’m down to 12dz now.

I wanted more weight up front but did not have enough spine, so, I put 15″ of 1716 ( wanted it on the front ) and it in effect made the shaft stiffer.

It went through my spike bull like it was invisible.

Next I want to try the internal footing, hopefully it will stiffen and strengthen the shaft.

Thanks for the tutorial. Looking forward to your curved tooth file – also copied your jig to get ready for it and I have a whole mess of “grizzlies” to pactice on.

After the Traditional shoot this past weekend Dave sat down with me and went through evey step. I can tell you one thing for sure, it works! I want to thank Dave for his time and the 160gr Grizzly’s he gave me to hunt with. Dave it’s always fun when we get together and share ideas.

Great information but after being honest with myself and my capabilities with sharpening this may be beyond me. ABS makes a single bevel sharpener do you think it would work with the Grizzly’s?
