I’d like to share how I made a sharpening block from bits and scraps I had in the shop. It is mobile, fits nicely in a pack, and keeps my sharpening items together.
Materials:
- 1 bastard file (10″ shown)
- 1 old leather belt
- 1 block of wood approximately 1 1/4″ x 2″ x 12″ (Be sure to select a block of wood that will fit both the file and belt.)
- 2 picture mounting brackets, with screws
- 2 screws for the belt
Secure the file using the two picture mounting brackets. Position the belt along one side and both ends of the block, and secure it with a screw on each end, as shown in the photo. I suggest you avoid the Hawaiian print belt and use a plain leather belt, if you can!
Voila! This simple sharpening block can go into a workshop, vehicle or pack. I use it often to draw file and then strop my broadheads on the leather belt, making them shaving sharp.
Nice tip that fits into our culture of improvisation and making your own gear. Thanks. I’ll be sure to make one.
Pretty neat!
