in reply to: A hunting widow's philosophy #16337
No missus to make me late night suppers either, she is to busy hunting! Whats worse she usually brings home more meat too! Almost enough to give a fella a complex or sumthin .
in reply to: Wee little muleys #16334Them are some monsters! Don’t see to many of them like that up here.
But if they be the “wee” ones, what do your trophy deer look like? 😉in reply to: Disappointing performance (not mine) #14658I wonder what type of head was he using?
in reply to: My first Deer is down! #14226Thanks for the kind words folks. And Bruc I still have three Whitetail tags, a Cow Elk tag, and two Black Bear tags. As well as Grouse and Beavers and such. Alberta truly is a hunters paradise.
Oh and Dave I am afraid no cheap wine was available so I had to do it the truly Albertan way, two tenderloins and two Buds!:Din reply to: That's the kind of people we have…. #14100I couldn’t agree more! This Spring I went on a Bear hunt with a fellow from my local trad oragnisation, and during the hunt my bow busted. So my friend made me a spanking new custom bow as a thanks for hosting the Bear hunt. Didn’t even charge me a dime! By far and large trad shooters are some of the best folks to be around for sure.
in reply to: How’s the outlook for deer in your area? #63603Winter was tough and the Wolves numerous, but we had to many Deer to begin with.
That being said Northern Alberta is looking pretty good this year. Grandad sees up to 20 Whitetails at a time in his fields feeding on timothy, and the in-laws have seen some high Muley numbers on their lands.in reply to: So dang funny!!! #63596Yah the snide comments get a bit old, but unlike down South there are alot of folks in Northern Canada that don’t think a trad bow is a serious weapon. And I have met more than one that are actually opposed to them being used for anything more than small game!
Guess I’ll just have to prove em wrong.in reply to: The Bowhunt #59592That was great Dr Ashby! Thanks for sharing.
in reply to: Does a few extra grains make a difference? #58395Archery is a sport that has few set in stone truths. Offhand I would say 10 grains wouldn’t affect nadda and likely most times I would be right. But that being said I have seen startling changes in arrow flight from such little things including brace hieght, nocking point, orientation of the cock feather, and even an inch or under change in silencer placement. Only way to tell for sure is to shoot em and see.
in reply to: Millennial mark #58153Yah I know what you mean. Just today when I was at the range I was getting heckled by a couple of compound shooters because my arrows were 500ish grains (gasp!). At any rate I didn’t bother trying to put the record straight about arrow wieght (they never listen and look at me like I have a third eye).
in reply to: Homemade Broadhead Targets #58143Dave I just hope you bring back your previous avatar by X-mas. My 5 year old niece saw it and thought it was so cool I was talking to Santa Claus. And don’t worry, I didn’t tell her what you did to the Reindeer.
in reply to: Homemade Broadhead Targets #57861I always used to use a cardboard box filled with even more cardboard boxes. Broadhead would poke out the other side and I would unscrew it and remove the arrow. But seeing as how your shootin woodies I would just use an old canvas feed bag stuffed (as full as humanly possible) with plastic, so that when you pull your arrows through it didn’t mess up your fletch. I made one such bag this Spring and my buddy who shoots woodies out of a 60lb longbow was only penetrating about half an arrow. Just far enough to expose the broadhead and bit, and make for easy removal.
in reply to: I guess you can #57027Congrats Polar Bear. Making my own strings is a goal of mine to, but I hope I figure it out before I turn 61 .
in reply to: Texas Nilgai #55618Only one I have ever heard of is Mike Mitten. I think he had an article about it in TBM sometime back. Wish I could tell you more.
in reply to: Critter care – post hunt #55616I can vouch for the Deerskins Into Buckskins book. Great read, very informative and easy to follow. The wife and I are hoping to make our own buckskins this year thanks to this book.
