in reply to: String Leeches Vs. Beaver Balls #43171
I find with a properly set up hill style longbow and proper string I do not need silencers. It is very quiet.
when I did shoot the recurve I use wool yarn balls or very small catwhiskers. No need for those “danglies” now:P
in reply to: John Schulz presents Howard Hill's style. #43164John Schulz knew what he was talking about!
I recently read his book “Straight Shooting” and it was a great and refreshing read. If you ever have the chance to read it get a copy.
I have watched those short videos 1,000nds of times and I still pick up something from time to time.
in reply to: Retro Longbow arrows #43121Yes, the newer mercury speed nocks have indexers. I got them off the big auction site. I do not like a huge indexer and they interfere with my fletching jig indexer so I file them down a bit though.
Yes, I chop my own and they are 6 1/2 and slighly high back also. Lots of feather but still quiet with the parabolic.
in reply to: Let's see our Elk Country pics! #36103in reply to: My Schulz! #35678I have replaced the grip on my Big-Five with some deer hide and it wasn’t that hard really. A friend of mine also redid his Miller and had a bowyer send him the material already cut to shape.
I head you on not wanting to send it away….
I think if I ever get the urge to remove the horn tip overlays back to it’s original form I would send it to Miller or someone like Nate Steen….
Here is a pic of the redone Big Five – I used deer sinew for stitching but would probably go with B50 for a neater appearance if i did it again….and I might. I want to slim that old girl down in the handle some day.
in reply to: Emergency Kit? #33552Yes, I carry a first aid kit as well in my pack. This little “kit” stays in my pocket in case I get seperated from my pack for some reason or fall into some frigid water and need a fire asap etc. I also keep a couple tampons in there as well:wink:

What do you think of that concave grip?
The dished drip……yes, I tried my first at the Baltimore shoot on a Northern Mist bow and found it to be pretty nice. Schulz preferred the dished while Hill stuck with the straight. I find little difference in the feel of how the bow shoots between the two styles as the dish is very slight. The dish kinda feels a little more “Natural” to the hand and some say it improves consistent hand placement. I would not turn away a bow if it had either style but the more I shoot this Schulz the more comfy it feels.
in reply to: woodies 101 #19981Good stuff,
I like to put one halfhitch in the end of my sinew and snug it up before drying. Just a little more insurance with the glue.
I am not a dipper, but I use un-thinned wipe on poly directly from the can with a small wide brush. I find I can get a thicker coat and still will have a nice even no bubble finish.
I use a clothesline and wooden clothespins instead of the drying board also.
I have been training myself to not look back at my arrows in the backquiver so I file the indexer off/lower on my broadhead arrows and I can find them without looking. You can do this with the sinew also by making a small bump in the wraps.
I also use 2 hacksaw blades taped together for the selfnock.
…just some other ideas. Enjoyed the videos!
in reply to: My Schulz! #18130I had heard all the hype about these bows and now I know why!
This bow is a “Masterpeice” and the bowyers attention to detail is evident in every way.
The bow is super smooth and like nothing else I have tried. It is even in another ballpark to the Miller I tried recentlty. Super lightweight and zipps a heavy arrow faster than my Big-Five that is 7 pounds more draw weight. It is also super quiet with no need of string silencers. I am so glad i picked it up. It shoots better than i ever will!
in reply to: New to me Schulz longbow #12171I had to resurrect this thread. I just picked up a Howard Hill Tembo made by John Schulz! AND it was named “Sagittarius”. How cool is that! A link to Hill, Schulz, and Swineheart. It called out to me so I had to have it:D This bow has to be loaded with Mojo!
Can’t wait to try it out! I have heard from both previous owners and the word on the street is that it shoots exceptionally even when compared to “other Schulz bows” those fellas had….
I’ll post some pictures when I get her!
Who else shoots a Schulz????????????????????????

Thanks and likewise!
I have been trying to get a Tom my way, on public land, and without a blind now for 9 years. I love it and one day everyone in the woods will hear me if I get one! I haven’t even had a shot at one yet but don’t much care:D
