Where I live it’s STILL coming down.. A friend of mine measured at around noon and she had 2 ft on her car.. I’ve got about a good 3 ft where I usually park my truck.. You’re than welcome to take this stuff back..lol
in reply to: RIP my trusty Shrew Classic Hunter #14436Ouch !! Glad you didn’t get hurt ..
Had a string break on me at full draw .. Scared the living Christmas outta me !! I’ll admit I was a bit gun shy for a while ..
Do you think it can be repaired or the least relaminated so it can be hunt up on a stand or something ??
in reply to: Your most memorable misses…. #59626arthurw wrote: My first year bowhunting. First and last time using a compound. I was hunting a particular, very large bodied 8 pointer. Finally, everything came together. I was in a pop up blind, sitting on a stool, with the window zipped down so the front of the blind was open. The buck showed up, and I waited til he got in front of the open window perfect broadside shot at 15 yards. I had buck fever, and had forgotten that when the sight was on the deer, the arrow was still much lower. I drew and released and the arrow went maybe 10 feet and hit a seriously heavy patch of brush, the arrow shot straight up, and the buck stepped behind a blowdown, with only his head visible. He stood there looking at me I nocked another arrow, and cursed the popup blind because I couldn’t move to get in position for another shot. I put the popup blind away for good as well. Been hunting with recurves out of natural cover ever since.
HAHAHA !! Your story reminds me of why I turned to traditional.. I’ll have to post thatthis evening after work.. Thanks:D
in reply to: Your most memorable misses…. #14576Sorry it took me a bit to get around to posting my own memorable miss for this year.. I actually have a number of memorable misses, including the one which turned me to traditional.. For now I’ll just post my most recent..
Two days before the end of early archery season here in PA. I had an awesome ground blind ambush set up with a scrape about 12 yds from me with a rub at around 15 yds.. The paths were WELL worn .. The back of my blind was a really thick hedge row.. In front of me there was grass and millet about mid thigh level.. I set up a couple of scent packs around the scrape, and settled in for the wait.. With it being the last days before rifle season I decide to call aggressively with a bleat can and grunt calls after a couple of hours sitting.. After a bit I could see a doe coming my way and she was in a hurry .. She came through the trail on a wire and went left of me into hedge row on one of the worn trails made by them… I thought that was pretty cool :D.. After about 15 minutes she came busting out of the hedge row on the right of me.. She stopped and the scrape, and sniffed around then made a deposit of her own, and headed back the way she came earlier.. She never knew I was there, which I thought was great ! About 30 minutes went by with no action, and I was getting a little sleepy.. That’s about when I heard the grass rustling and that’s when I finally saw this little six point … He’d pretty much just “ghosted” and was feeding on the grass.. He was a little nervous it seemed and he stayed clear of the scrape.. At one point he looked right at me .. I kept my head tilted down so he didn’t catch my eyes.. He went back to feeding and started working his way past me.. I focused on that little pocket right behind his elbow as he worked his way past me.. The whole time my heart’s pounding like a hammer.. I slowly pulled back to draw and about 3/4’s of the way back I heard the string pluck:shock: .. The string slipped off my fingers and the arrow sailed over his back.. It spooked him a little and he out to about 15 yds from me.. I had a second shot but couldn’t get an arrow out of my quiver beside me because I had a cover over them for when I stalked my way in. So I sat and watched him just mosey away none the wiser..
That was the closest I’ve come to getting a deer with my bow..
Btw, I’m sure most of you will wonder why I didn’t go after the doe .. I didn’t buy a doe tag, so she was off limits … But next year …
in reply to: This may be a dumb question but.. #28698Well I was able to make it out today for a bit and with the brace height at about halfway, it’s definitely a LOT quieter !! I’ll be playing with it a bit more after the holidays, and hunting season is over…
Grumpy, I was prepared for the worse and had already made an extra set of silencers(just in case).. 😆
Thanks again folks !!:D
in reply to: This may be a dumb question but.. #16352I’ve got a couple of longbows that I shoot as well, just to keep me in touch with both sides…
in reply to: This may be a dumb question but.. #15142Limb pads(on the tips) were the first thing put on.. Haven’t had a chance to get out with the rain the past few days..
Never heard of adding padding to the riser(yeah it’s a take down).. Will keep that in mind if I don’t get it quieted down…
Thanks for the ideas..:D
in reply to: Success to me means getting the meat???? #15016What I count as success is being able to get close to a critter and it not detecting me.. Granted I have yet to get a deer with my bows.. I’ve gotten plenty of small game(pheasant, squirrel, rabbit, etc) and it’s been a blast getting close to them for a shot…
in reply to: This may be a dumb question but.. #51473I checked the brace height, and it’s on the lower end for this bow.. Will try that to see how it goes.. I had tuned it in when I first got it but never actually checked the brace height..
in reply to: Seats vs The Ground #17123Can’t say that I’ve ever tried one of those.. I usually carry the heavy foam pads with me and a maybe a blanket, as I can’t handle being on my knees too long. So I usually either flat on the foam or build up a ground blind where I can carry a squirrel bucket seat in with me.. Usually its the foam and blanket..
in reply to: Just wanted to say howdy .. #12691Thanks All 😀
I missed a five yard shot on a little six point next to the last day of early archery here in PA. Never came to full draw.. The string just slipped off my fingers and the arrow sailed right over his back.. He trotted off to about 12 yds, trying to figure out what had happened while I tried to dig out another arrow from my quiver.. He finally just ambled off..
My heart was going like a jackhammer during that whole time…lol
in reply to: How do you keep warm? #63314After last year’s brutal winter here in PA, I learned a nice trick to keeping warm after the doors at my job froze open for a little over 2 weeks during single digit temps..
One of my biggest problems was keeping my hands warm(mostly fingers).. I would have on base layer compression winter wear, then heavy fleece, then my work shirt, my heavyweight hoodie and a heavy jacket.. Since wearing mittens was out of the question for the work I did, I was miserable for the first day or so until quite by accident I left one of the handwarmers in the pouch of my hoodie.. Within about an hour my fingers started feeling better.. They were still cold but nothing like before.. After work I went and picked up the largest handwarmers that walmart carried and tried them the next day.. My fingers were a little cool but nothing even close to being in pain as before..
I then tried them out while hunting. It was +10 with a wind chill of about -15.. My bow hand, I wore an extra large mitten and wore a heavy winter glove inside of that. On my string hand I wore a mitten which I could slip off needed. I carried my muff(I think that’s what they’re called) but didn’t use it but once or twice while I sat..
This year I stocked up on them just in case..
As far as winter boots.. If it snows the pac boots come out.. Otherwise I’m in my regular winter loggers… HTH
in reply to: Just wanted to say howdy .. #48164I’m in the Carlisle area .. I have to admit I love small game hunting more than the large game.. It gets me out in the woods more..:D
