in reply to: Seats vs The Ground #31102
One thing that I have used on a couple of hunts is thick skateboarding knee pads. You slip them on before going into the woods, it does not bother you when you are walking in and they are pretty comfortable for awhile. I can knee down and sit on my feet for awhile but eventually have to straighten my legs for a stretch. If I ever do a stalking hunt they are a must I tell ya! But I will agree with the comments above….hammock seat rules!!
I have actually been hunting from a tree stand this year, and it may be my last. I hunt public land so constantly hauling gear in and out of the woods is a bit old. Once I get in my stand its great but it takes more time to settle in plus I am carrying in climbing sticks that can make noise when setting them up. I rather get to my hunting spot and be ready to hunt with little not no setup

My Grandma always said “Can’t never did anything but try always did”
I might reword this to “Cant never did anything but try it and always do” 😛
in reply to: Can You, or Cant You? #31834I cant when I shoot for a couple different reasons.
#1 it opens up my sight window and I can clearly see my target with both eyes and no bow interference
#2 I hunt from the ground and if I were to shoot straight from a seating position my bottom limb would hit the ground
#3 when I stump shoot I am sometimes have to cant my bow so it does not hit a tree branch that is in the way
#4 because I shoot traditional equipment and I can cant 😀
#5 it does not limit me to one shot
Try shooting your bow from your knees and see if you can shoot it without canting your bow.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #30800Well I went out to my public land area to retrieve my trail camera….I either hid it really really good or someone yanked it. Oh well….not very traditional for me to use them anyways. I am more upset that I lost my memory card then the cheap camera…I was basically leaving it out there for someone to take anyways, but have hope that people would leave it alone. Shortly after I sat along a CREP field and watch 7 does feed out 40 yards infront of me for a good 30 minutes. The wind was blowing in my favor for awhile and then swirled. I watch the old doe lift her nose up and try to find where I was located. They never flagged their tails up but they quickly moved out of the area once the wind changed 🙂
in reply to: What ya got goin? #15792This is on public land where I typically only see 4-6 pointers so I was quite surprised to see this many points on a deer! This is the first year that I will be hunting from a tree, I typically do all my hunting on the ground but I am giving a tree a shot this year since I have not had much luck hunting from the ground. The preseason scouting has been great! I have new areas where I will be hunting plus I have seen several shootable bucks IMO! I am pretty excited about this season after getting skunked out last year. I need to get a higher deer count under my belt!
in reply to: What ya got goin? #15284I am pretty excited just hung my first tree stand of the year…1 of 2. This will be my first year hunting the whole year from a tree. Hopefully it will suite me well…I also put out a trail camera….(ssshhh don’t tell my dad or he will disown me)….and ended up getting a picture of this guy. This is mid August in Minnesota, I would expect him to be a little heavier than this. He looks skinny to me but what does everyone else think?
in reply to: Strange Things/Near Misses #15271First year shooting carbons with my longbow, I was shooting so well that I was banging arrows together. I happened to damage an arrow without my knowledge and the next time that I shot the arrow it exploded into 3 different pieces. The field point end went flying off to the left down range, the middle section flew directly to my left of me and the knock end some how ended up behind me. My string hit my bicep all the way down my arm to my arm guard. Before I realized it was my string that hit my arm I thought I was going to have bits of carbon sticking out of my arm. Thankfully it was only a giant string welt. Needless to say anytime that I see a damage arrow of any sort I break it in half and toss it away even if it is one of the first dozen shots with it….which has happened. I inspect my arrows anytime I hear them bang together now to make sure they are still safe to shoot.
I have also had a nock point break upon release of my woody arrows and sent my arrow flying practically sideways before it hit a tree and broke.
in reply to: Lion Poacher? #56070I live in the Twin Cities area and people are putting signs all over his business “Coward” “Killer” etc. I have read several different stories on how he took the lion with luring him out of the park with bait, then shooting him at night with spot lights. If these statements are true then I will not stand by this guy. I am not sure if it is legal to hunt at night over there or not but as far as fair chase goes…not very ethical.
Why I personally do not stand by trophy hunting and killing an animal just for its fur and leaving the meat…I will stand by any hunter who hunts ethically and legally regardless. If his statement is true that he was trusting his outfitters to hunt a legal animal, which sounds pretty reasonable, and he took the animal legally I will stand by him. To me it sounds like this guy paid a lot of money to legally hunt an animal and the outfitters were the bad guys.
We will find out more on this story in the next couple of days
in reply to: But Whose Counting? #42506I just went down to the public land I hunt on last weekend to check out some new spots to hang my tree stand. Typically I do not see very many bucks down there but last weekend that all changed. I was making tons on noise in the woods trying to create a new path, breaking branches moving logs etc. I walking out to a field and I see a buck looking right towards me so I freeze. He eventually gets bored of looking my way and goes back to feeding. This buck was nice size I could count 4 points on him and he was outside the ears. I saw two smaller 4 pointers that were with him and then behind those two boys was an even BIGGER buck. I watched these fellas for about 15 minutes when I heard a noise behind me and saw another big buck less than 15 yards behind me staring right at me! He snorted at me and jumped away, shortly after the other deer took off! It got my legs shakin and my heart pounding! September 17th cannot come soon enough!!!
in reply to: What do you do when you hit a bulls eye? #42467If I am shooting in a archery range where I know people are watching, on the outside I act like its no big deal, on the inside I am jumping all over like crazy
in reply to: What Ya NOT Got Goin'? #63251I do not have the sound of a sexy turkey call yet. I have been getting my butt out of bed at 3:30 to get out into the woods. I hear lots of turkeys I know they are around but not sure if it is my blind, or my decoys, or my calling that is turning them off.
in reply to: how to clean a old recurve #64004Its a very fine sandpaper and does not remove very much but it is doing the trick!
I should have mentioned too that he pained the bow a camo color too for whatever reason…But all of it is coming off which is good. If all else fails I guess I will hang it up as decoration if the bow does not work
in reply to: how to clean a old recurve #63980I got some of the orange goo gone and after hours of scrubbing and spraying and scrubbing and spraying I got about 5 inches of the handle clean 😯
I then desided to take extreme measures and I found that I had a drywall sand paper and that worked magic…minus the fact that is it scuff the limbs very slightly. Nothing a little oil wont fix though. I did a combination of sanding then spraying the goo gone letting it sit for a couple minutes and then wiping as much of it off as possible. I think once I am finished with it tonight its going to look like it originally did!
in reply to: how to clean a old recurve #62209Aaaa I see the miss connection….I can’t say I have used the orange stuff that much and I am familiar with the goo gone that will remove your intire bumper if you are not careful with it. I will give the orange stuff a shot and see what happenes
in reply to: how to clean a old recurve #62178I was reading on Goo Gone to clean them but that is some nasty stuff….I am concerned that it will take off more than just the old residue…I am worried that the furnish will be removed as well
